Our history — and your future
The American Institute of CPAs® (AICPA) and its predecessors have served the public interest for 137 years. The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants® (CIMA) was founded in 1919 and has helped shaped the profession for over a century. In 2017, we came together as AICPA & CIMA to forge a powerful international alliance that promotes accounting and finance in every corner of the world.
Today, we serve 597,000 members, candidates and registrants in 188 countries and territories. By providing exclusive guidance and specialized resources — including prestigious designations, certifications and credentials — we empower you to create an even brighter tomorrow, both for yourself and for the profession.

We’re governed by a board of directors and the AICPA and CIMA councils. Volunteer committees represent the interests of our membership, help maintain our standards, promote public and management accounting, and provide member services.

AICPA Governing Council
Made up of approximately 265 members and representatives from every U.S. state and territory. Council meets every May and October. Regional Council meetings are held annually in March. Council determines AICPA programs and policies.
They may exercise all powers requisite for the AICPA’s purposes not inconsistent with AICPA Bylaws or member resolutions. This includes prescribing policies and procedures, and enacting resolutions upon the Board of Directors, officers, volunteer groups and staff.
CIMA Governing Council
May have up to a maximum of 58 members (38 directly elected by CIMA members, 16 co-opted and four honorary officers, which includes the president, deputy president, vice president and immediate past president).
Council currently has 52 members: 37 elected, 11 co-opted and four honorary officers. Council governs CIMA and its affairs, and meets three times a year to discuss and set policy.
Various committees oversee elections, professional conduct and competence standards, and the benevolent fund.
