Why change providers?
There are various reasons you may want to switch internet providers, but most people switch to save money, to get faster speeds or when they move.
Sometimes, internet customers realize they are paying too much for the speeds they’re getting or that they don’t actually need as much speed as they’re paying for. In this case, switching to a provider that offers more affordable internet prices can save you money each month.
If you think this might be the case for you, first determine the actual internet speed you need to support your online activities and the number of devices connected to your network. - Data caps – Most providers have high enough data caps that you likely won’t exceed the limit. But if you go over, you could end up paying up to $15 for every additional 50 GB you use. For this reason, many people opt for an unlimited data plan. Some of the most common unlimited data providers include AT&T (select plans), Frontier, Optimum, Spectrum, Verizon and Windstream
- Cancellation fees – Many providers require you to sign two-year contracts, which means steep fees if you decide to cancel early. Before switching providers, check to see how much longer you have left in your contract and what the cost will be for terminating early. Also, make sure you know the contract length with your new provider. Providers with no contracts include CenturyLink, Frontier, Spectrum, Verizon and Xfinity
- Promotional offers – Some providers offer “signing bonuses” for when you switch, which can include gift cards, contract buyout offers and other free perks, such as streaming service subscriptions, installation or equipment. Providers that likely offer “signing bonuses” are AT&T, Frontier, Hughesnet, Spectrum and Verizon
- Customer service – When you have questions or are having issues with your internet, you want a provider that can address your problems quickly and effectively. What type of internet service should I choose?
Where you live and what your needs are can have a large impact on whether you should switch providers. There are advantages and potential disadvantages to cable, fiber, DSL, satellite and fixed wireless, so make sure you know which option is best for you.
Always consider the speed you need to support the number of devices connected to your network and the types of online activities your household participates in. You need enough speed to handle these activities and devices so you don’t experience inconsistent connectivity, dead zones, lag and buffering.
If you have a large household with heavy gamers, streamers and people working or learning from home, then you will need a faster plan to support these activities. If you live alone or with one other person, a low or mid-tier plan will do.
Your location matters, too. If you live in a rural area, you likely won’t have access to fiber or even cable, so a slower satellite plan could be your only option. If you live in a more populated area, you may have more options to choose from.
Fiber is the fastest and most reliable internet service, but it is far less available than cable. If it is available where you live, it will give you the most bang for your buck unless you save money by bundling with a cable provider.
Cable providers are widely available and often allow customers to bundle internet, TV and phone services, sometimes with savings. Similarly, 5G providers like Verizon and T-Mobile offer discounts on their 5G internet services if you bundle with a mobile phone plan. Consider your overall service needs when making a connection-type decision.
How can I save on internet without switching?
- Lower your speeds – If your internet bill is simply too high, check to see if you can manage with a slightly lower internet speed to cut costs
- Bundle – Save by getting a package deal of two or more services (internet, TV and phone), usually from one provider. When you bundle, you pay only one monthly fee for your different services and this fee is often at a discounted rate compared to what you would be spending if you bought these services separately
- Stop renting your modem and router – Costs can add up quickly when you are paying a monthly rental fee for your modem and router in addition to your internet bill. One way to cut costs over the long term is to buy your own modem and router. However, not all providers give you the option to buy your own equipment. You also likely won’t receive the same assistance from your internet provider if you run into problems with your modem and router
- Negotiate with your provider – Before you settle on switching providers in order to save, consider calling your current internet provider and negotiating a better deal. This will not always work, but it can be worth it in some cases since providers don’t want to lose customers
