Best Kindle Ever

Best Kindle Ever
I'm been a Kindle fan for a long time. Since before they were available in Australia, I would import from the USA. I still remember my first kindle, I tried to find the plastic to peel off, only to realise, it wasn't a printed plastic sticker, it was the text of the screen! I've been in love ever since. Being able to have hundreds of books with me without carrying boxes or taking up room space is still amazing to me. I strongly believe the eBook and eink reader was the best invention of my lifetime. The Scribe is everything I envisioned the Kindle would one day be. A reading, writing and drawing device. The big glorious screen is amazing for reading. It's like printed text on a page the magically glows. The large screen makes the pages feel less cramped than other ereaders and feels more like you're look at the page of a nice glossy book. The pen and writing on the screen is fantastic. I'm not exaggerating when I say it actually feels like writing on paper. I've had tablets and pens before, that claim the same, with expensive filters and screen protectors that wear out after a month and need to be constantly replaced, only to get, at best, to feel better than writing on glass, but not feel like actual paper (despite the claims). This actually feels like paper. It makes writing enjoyable and the screen refreshes so fast there is no lag. The pixel density of the screen and pressure sensitivity of the pen, makes the writing look like your natural handwriting. There are a lots of great templates to use and folders to organise it all. There's even an option to PIN lock the device for security.Which also translates over to a great drawing experience. I'm looking forward to taking a few online drawing courses and since the kindle can be used in full sun, it's going to be a great sketch pad. They've updated the drawing tools over the year and added more features. No doubt layers are in the works. So if you read/watched any reviews, be aware they're outdated when they mention the drawing tools. It's not as comprahensive as dedicated graphic art apps or dedicated drawing devices, but it has the tools needed. And as they say, limitation breeds creativity. This is the best device I've purchased in years. I wish I had this when I was a young man. Everyone should own this device. Reading, writing and drawing is what makes humans, human. And something that can unleash the creativity spark in us all, and help pass knowledge and storytelling between peoples and generations, is something very special indeed.

I wanted something I could put my craft books onto, and annotate them if necessary, and record any projects I did from them. I did a search, including reviews, to find the most reliable e-book to do that. It would have been nice to have had colour, but I did not recognise many of the brands and the companies had often only been in existence for a few years, or else they were beyond my budget, and still did not do quite what I wanted. The Scribe was the nearest I could get to something I could use, and the price was reasonable.
Its a lot larger than I expected but its easy enough to hold if I have to, but the most pleasing thing is the clarity of the print. Its in black and white, which is a pity as I would have preferred colour, but I am hoping this will not be too much of a disadvantage since I can check colours on the app on my computer. Set up was simple, the most tedious part of it all was picking out the books I wanted on it and downloading them, but now its done.
One of my gripes is during setup setting the time is not intuitive or automatic! I don't live in Sydney, so I have had to make sure the time is set to manual, not automatic, and will have to set it into summer time in a few weeks. This is very basic and all our mobile phones and computers manage it, and so does my Paperwhite, so why not the Scribe? But it is only a matter of slight inconvenience.
I have not yet tried the pen but I have used a little rubber tipped stylus on it and it responds well to that. which brings me to my second gripe. I wanted the 32Gb Scribe with the basic pen, and couldn't get it. I notice the 64Gb version was also not available, not funny if your technical library has a lot of diagrams and drawings. Craft libraries suffer from the same drawback, they have large files and 16Gb may not be enough, but the price increase is not justified by the more expensive pen being included with the 32Gb.
Those gripes aside, I am happy with the Scribe and it will suit my needs, and my experience in the past with Kindles suggests I will get good use out of this.

I've now had my 32Gb Kindle Scribe for just over 2 weeks.

I've been using it every day, during working hours as a note taker during meetings and for quiet brainstorming and after hours to read. I do most reading sitting on a couch or in bed before sleep.

I still carry it with the care of a newborn child because it is so thin and slippery. I don't know how fragile it is but I don't want to find out. The device is beautifully made and finished and I don't want to put a blemish on it.

The battery life is pretty good. I charged it on day 1 and after solid use it's at around 42%. That's on day 15. That's impressive.

I've got the premium pen but don't use the eraser on the back because one needs to press it quite firmly to depress the spring in the cap to activate the eraser function. That makes me worry about the screen getting scratched. Instead I've assigned the eraser to the middle button.

Anyway making notes is a breeze as is organising them into notebooks and folders.

I'm also a published author and am between books. I can see how this will be an absolutely awesome editor when I start my next book. It's so easy to add notes into a book.

An interesting thing I've found is that notes are visible on the Android Kindle app. Unfortunately one can't interact with them except take a screenshot. It would be nice to be able to interact with notes on the app.

Anyway as a reader it's so much nicer than my Paperwhite. I get so do much more on the screen and love how I can make the screen warmer. The one downside of making it warmer is a reduction in sharpness. But overall it's so much nicer to have more words on the screen. It feels much like reading a real paperback.

At the start I felt the size and thinness a bit awkward while lying down but I've gotten used to it and have adjusted my grip. The muscles must have grown in the fingers I use to hold it and I can easily hold it in my left hand.

I'm really glad i bought this and know that I'm going to get real good use out of it.

I chose this over the kobo elipsa even though i prefer kobo generally, but the features on this were reviewed elsewhere as really good and the big kobo isn’t there yet.
I love this tablet.. i got the basic pen and 16gb version and don’t yet find any limitations by getting the smallest one. The pen is great and doesn’t need battery or charging or anything so thats my style of device.
I’m reading a lot more with this than with my kobo h2o because i can see a whole “page” at a time so its more relaxing. Its too big to carry to work though really so its an “at home” device for me. Its roughly same weight as an ipad.
So far haven’t used the notetaking extensively but writing feels very easy and good. The marks made and speed it renders on the screen are great. Generally the speed is a significant improvement on any ereader i’ve previously tried. I guess faster cpu etc takes battery but a super quick ereader would bring these things more into mainstream use, cos people expect instant stuff these days.
In short - i’m glad i got this.
I took one star off cos images in epubs cannot be enlarged and render quite small on the pages. Its possible though that there is a shortcut i don’t know about to make them bigger. If i ever find it i’ll edit this review.

Edit: Very disappointing that side loaded books (like drm free ones that are loaded onto the kindle using an app like Calibre) cannot have their covers. It takes more pleasure away from using the kindle than i would have expected. If this issue can’t be fixed i will be going with kobo next time. Its just unnecessary that it ruin my fun like this. If there was some explanation then maybe i could fix it somehow myself, but its like the problem doesn’t exist?

Purchased this mainly for the ability to write notes electronically and then be able to email them on as needed. Still learning how to use it to its full potential but am really starting to enjoy the writing experience and getting rid of notepads on my desk at work. It has also provided some efficiencies at work with being able to notate PDFs and email them on.
