There is nothing special about this foam pad, but it does the trick in protecting our car doors from hitting the metal rally column in the middle of our garage. The instructions said to measure the circumference of the pole and add 2" to that amount, then trim the piece. I did this, but when I wrapped the piece around the pole, it was actually a full inch or 1.25" too short! Go figure. Still, it was close enough to work.
Also, be very careful-- as someone else wrote, when opening the box. If you use a knife it's super-easy to slice into the foam. And don't tug too hard on the long zip ties... I used pliers to give it a firm snug-up and the tie broke. But the seller sent me some replacement ties... so I give 5 bonus points for excellent customer service. Still $30+ is a bit steep for what you get. But what else can you do?
