I really like this gate. It's reliable and easy to use. It opens in either direction and does not stand open, so it's convenient to moved back and forth thru without having to work to shut it behind you. It's a little trickier than I'd prefer to get open. You really do need one free hand, and I often am holding things in both hands. But it's well designed to keep dogs and babies from being able to climb over it. I'm amazed at gates that have a horizontal bar, which just acts as a ladder rung for climbing. This is all smooth verticals and rather taller than most gates. It's actually quite a bit more than I need, since we only have a little shih tzu who isn't exactly athletic. It's a little annoying that the extension is so expensive. But it all went together smoothly and installed easily. Check it now and then. Any tension gate will tend to get a little loose with usage.
EDIT: I'm boosting this to five stars. I've taken to letting it close gently a lot of times to avoid it latching. Then I can get thru it again with both hands full. I'm considering putting a little pad to keep from latching most of the time.

This gate is a life saver. It fits perfect as described, is tall enough to keep my Bull Terrier from leaping over it and has an affordable extension that fits our wide staircase. I installed it in 15 minutes and it works with bannister adaptors on the top and regular pressure supports on the bottom. My kids can use it with ease and the dogs have been defeated. I ordered two different gates and had to return both before finding this one. I love that it closes on its own because my boys would not remember to close it and the dogs would be on the carpet.
