Louis Lieff of Westport, Fairfield County, CT was born on December 8, 1919, and died at age 85 years old on October 6, 2005.
My mother was the oldest of two daughters. She was a very beautiful and refined woman with very good taste. She was, also, very practical. You could say that my mother was the "salt of the earth". You could, also, say that my mother always knew the right thing to do. She was a very good cook and homemaker and her real "job" in life was as a mother. She took her responsibilities very seriously and it was important to my mother that people thought that we were well brought up. My mother was a loving, devoted wife to my father and a very devoted family person. She had a lot of friends and was admired in the community. My mother had a regal bearing and always seemed to me to be the most elegant person in any room. She was generous and charitable. An amusing story that my sister and I heard about our mother is that, in her teen years, she once wanted to go somewhere, at night, and her mother didn't want her to go, so she climbed out of the window. Several decades later, her oldest granddaughter, Suzanne, did the same thing! My mother had very high standards for her immediate family and fiercely protected us if anyone hurt us. She, also, had a dry sense of humor. My mother was a sophisticate, despite having married at age 20 and she loved cultural activities, especially theater- and movie-going. Her love was very deep.
My father was the youngest of seven children. He was very close to his mother, who wanted him to become a rabbi. My father wasn't interested, however. When he was a boy, his family moved from Canada to the Bronx. He met my mother, Mildred, when he was in his late teens and they married when he was 23 - 24. They had a very good marriage until my mother passed away at age 66. My father told my sister and me that our mother was the "love of his life". My father remarried a couple of years after my mother passed away and lived in Commack, NY with his second wife until she put him into a nursing home in Hauppage, NY. My father's interests were varied, but he especially enjoyed golf, reading and music. He used to read in a lilac tree when he was a boy. He was a wonderfully, graceful dancer and he and my mother danced beautifully together. My father had great respect and admiration for women and saw us as superior to men. My father was a loving, gentle, understanding man whom everyone liked. He, also, had a wonderful sense of humor. My father taught everyone in the family, who was interested, to play golf. I was his regular golf buddy from ages 10 - 13, or so, and played golf with him, occasionally, until he could no longer play. As I said in his eulogy, my father was the perfect father for me as he was optimistic and encouraging and thought that I was multitalented. In my father's mind, I was, at least, the equal of any man. In that significant respect, my father was way ahead of his time. RIP dear Dad.
