Verdict: Outstanding Character Parade
Synopsis
Welcome to the year 2010. Built on an artificial island, the city of NeoAcropolis is slowly blossoming into the ideal city of the future. The series tells the separate stories of 11 girls living in that city, with each episode entirely dedicated to a single one of them. The creators even go as far as giving each episode a different ending song, sung by the respective girl.
Genre: Romance/Shortstory
The stories are independent - and just as varied and diverse as the personalities of the girls they're dealing with. Some of them are sad, some are dramatic, some are philosophical and some are funny. But they still have things in common - among those are a poignant/(self)ironic sense of humor and also the splendid depiction of the personalities in it.
Looking at it from afar, one might get the idea that SC is "another harem anime" or so. Wrong guess. It's more of a very well-done character study mixed with some really intelligent and unusual story ideas.
Characters
It would go to far to describe all 11 maidens here, but it has to be said that Aoi Nanase provided SC with a great spectrum of unusual personalities. Don't expect any run-of-the-mill stereotypes here. Instead, what about a female manga artist? An introverted girl-genius? A female math teacher? A wannabe-heroine? And that list can easily be continued.
Even if you forget about all other nice aspects of SC, the characters itself can already make it worth the while.
Animation/Design
Aoi Nanase's charadesigns are a dazzling sight, featuring a style that often looks fragile but is very expressive regardless. Some like it, others not - I for my part love it.And yes, SC is already a bit older - and thus the animation level is not really breathtaking, but considering the nature of the stories told, that isn't much of a problem. You will usually be too spellbound by the girls to notice it anyway.
Finishing Line
Aoi Nanase really made full use of the "short story" approach. As a result, all the storylines turn out as fresh and intelligent - and every single one of the episodes has at least one distinguishing catch to it. Each of the girls easily manages to draw your attention and you'll sure feel attached to quite many of them until the show is over.
Note that a 8.5/10 is a score not easily earned, especially in my rating system - but SC got it, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who loves witty plots and believable characters.
