Charlotte has been raised by her father, a former French nobleman, and is now living on a ranch in Quebec, Canada.
Although motherless, Charlotte was a happy girl until her 12th birthday, surrounded by a loving father and many friendly animals. On that day, however, a package arrives from her "mother", who was supposedly dead.
After Charlotte's father dies, this mother comes to live with her. At the same time, Charlotte meets a strange boy. This is only the beginning of many heartbreaking incidents in the little girl's life, but in the end, her trusting and optimistic nature wins over all hardship and Charlotte is able to regain happiness.

Charlotte was first attempt to Nippon Animation in shoujo maybe in reaction to the success of Candy Candy. The result is a half success. We got a hearwarming cast and animation quality we could expect for Nippon Animation (even thou there's numerous disparitise in the representation of Quebec city). However, the plot suffer some dramatic flaws and fill rushed in the last episodes. I watched the french dubbed version, so maybe lots of thing get lost in translation; as sometime this adaption feel way too simplied and childish in term of dialogue, not mentionning the unconvincing voice acting at time. Still, a pleasant watch and the only shoujo set in Quebec. And it features the only anime apparition of Bonhomme Carnaval! Recommended!
