Japan, Hiroshima, the last year of World War II. A little girl named Nabuko saves a small, black kitten from aggressive dogs, and takes it to her home. At first, her parents were against having a pet, since they wouldn't have enough food to feed her, but after a short while, they agree. The kitten brings joy and happiness to the family, but those happy days won't last long. The nightmares of war won't let them forget about themselves, as the most drastic event is about to happen...
