it's a studio ghibli title. this is NOT sci-fi, I wouldn't even call it fantasy, it's analogous to the world of Spirited Away except the "spirits" are avatars in an online game. The problem is you can't just make up definitions for words, the game avatars act exactly like you would expect spirits to act if the movie were set in a Japanese spirit world and they act nothing like you would expect avatars to act in an online game setting whatsoever.
I wish I had known what I was getting into, I would have skipped this movie. If you like other offerings by this studio and are interested in a romp set in a Japanese spirit world dressed up in stupid science window dressing then I guess you would enjoy this. I was extremely bored by the end and had to force myself to finish.
more details in my review.
Directed by Hosoda Mamoru, with character designs by Sadamoto Yoshiyuki, screenplay by Okudera Satoko and produced at the Madhouse studios, it is no wonder that Summer Wars feels and looks like Toki o Kakeru Shoujo.
In fact many themes and elements are taken over not only from TokiKake but also other earlier Hosoda works. The coming-of-age story, the youthful feeling, the warm and sensitive direction, the element of time and more. All of those are typical for Hosoda, just like the flat animation style.
