I’ve been retweeting a lot of the memes coming from the Japanese Mega Man broadcast. It’s been a hoot.

I need to know the reaction to the worst villain of them all; Dr Petto

That Mega Man news is interesting. It's always funny thinking about how shows from the West are considered foreign dramas and such there, like how Endo Tatsuya likes White Collar.

Quote:
We missed it a few weeks back, but December 25 was the birthday of beloved blond Canadian girl/True Ancestor Arcueid Brunestud. Leave some duct tape out for her!
FGO released Phantasmoon, a mysterious magical girl with no relation whatsoever to Arcueid, on the 25th. Players then spent the rest of the year killing Neco Arc after she stole everyone's presents and then killed her again after she came back from the dead to ring in the new year.

Thank you Neco Arc, your sacrifice will not be forgotten...

Because this was likely before anyone reading this column was born, allow me to explain:

I grew up with it! As meme-able and of dubious quality as it is, as a kid, having a Megaman cartoon was frigging awesome. Very Happy

As of late, is the Amazon Prime release of the Mega Man U. S. cartoon dubbed in Japanese? And will be "Skysurfer Strike Force", another Ruby-Spears offering, finally come to Japan?

Man, I sure do love it when things I clearly remember are talked about as if they took place before the printing press was invented. If you'll excuse me, I'll just be off in the corner crumbling to dust.

Who knows, maybe that'll open the doors to Japan also getting a chance to see the Street Fighter cartoon and Darkstalkers cartoon as "Street Fighter USA" and "Vampire USA,"

The former already exists actually.

Same

-Watched it during a Summer break since it aired at 2:30PM after Samurai Pizza Cats on WPIX-11.
-Had the ADV DVD bricks with this artwork.
-Had the later re-release of the first set (second set got cancelled).
-Currently have the Discotek set and speaking of which, it's so cool to see a clean version of that artwork get used for the Japanese streaming sites.

No, the Ruby-Spears Mega Man cartoon wasn't dubbed into Japanese. It's only available subtitled in Japanese, not unlike a lot of Discotek releases for older Japanese shows Laughing I imagine the show is too old and too niche for anyone to afford dubbing it. Though it's funny to think of what 90s-era seiyuu would've been cast as the characters. I'm thinking Norio Wakamoto for Shadowman Laughing

As for Skysurfer Strike Force, that one is beyond me.

I am amused they actually went and called it "Street Fighter USA" Anime hyper

For what it's worth, the ADV art is pretty sick. Muscled-up Mega Man is always gonna be weird to look at, but when you get the right artist on it, it really fits in with a sort of 90s anime vibe.

Also grew up with the Megaman cartoon, my cousin and I loved it and it was one of the few shows I could actually get since my parents categorically refused to get us cable as we "watched too much TV already".

I enjoy the feedback loop from the Mega Man USA release.

Who would you rather have doing mental narration, Dan Larson or NES Works' Jeremy Parish?

Along with the Mario Bros Super Show and the Zelda cartoon that's made Link's catchphrase legendary, the Mega Man one was up there as being some primo-quality early-era video game media. In the same way that the first Netflix Castlevania series (not the newer one) did a fair job changing some things up and filling in a story that was mostly non-existent outside of the manual, it manages to contain the sort of popcorn-y "hurry home from school to see it" sort of vibes that are sorely lacking from Amazon's garbo short they just put out. It doesn't hit the heights and mystery of something like Sonic's main SatAM show, but it was certainly coherent enough that when the Battle Network series finally started airing in America, it wasn't too hard to pull friends aside and say "Hey, remember that Mega Man show, they have a new one that's cool!" - and they could recognise the characters and get excited for it.

If I recall, Recettear was like one of two or three games released in relatively close proximity to each other, I cant remember the names, but all three were very much worth taking a look at. I'll have to check out the HD version.

Not only was Jeremy Parish the subject of my graduate thesis, I've been reading his stuff since he was "EGM's Jeremy Parish" and "Editor of 1Up.com Jeremy Parish"! But that answers my question, Parish will always be more of a written editorial guy for me. I had the pleasure of seeing Parish's Dragon Quest panel at the last Portland Retro Game Expo, he's a heck of a host. But he'll always be a text-guy for me. If I ever write about a cartoon again, assume Larson is narrating.

If I ever write about anime again, though, it's Grumpy Jii-san (RIP).

Christmas was indeed Arcueid's birthday, and Fate/Grand Order celebrated with an out of nowhere second Christmas event focused on our favorite vampire princess becoming a triple threat of magical girl, livestreamer and Santa Claus all at once!

Not only was Arc's magical girl counterpart Phantasmoon made playable, but the event's villain was none other than La Criatura herself out for revenge against Ciel for using her as ammo for her Noble Phantasm.

I'm surprised that the Ruby/Spears "Mega-Man" series hasn't appeared in Japan until now. I thought it would have been an obvious thing to occur. I hope that this show gets a Japanese dub. I think it earns it and I hope they do it. The Japanese will enjoy it as much as we have here in America.

I think part of the reason the Nikke/Eva crossover didn't go well, is because they didn't advertise it well. I starting playing Nikke for the RE:Zero event, and while it didn't hold my interest (partly because the RE:Zero units didn't stack up, as noted), I might have started playing it again for the Eva collab. But this was literally the first I've heard of it.
