    Gymnastics World Championships

Giarnni Regini-Moran will compete against the world's best gymnasts for the first time this week - 18 months after he learned how to walk again.

The 21-year-old makes his senior World Championships debut for Great Britain in Stuttgart having overcome a traumatic knee injury he suffered in 2016.

"It was a brutal, brutal injury," he told BBC Sport.

"I honestly didn't think I would come back from it."

He added: "For me it's about getting these World Championships completed safely and making sure as a team we qualify for the Olympics."

Ellie Downie is the current European all-around silver medal holder and would like to go one better than that with World Championship gold in Stuttgart.

For Ellie, who qualified fourth on the vault, offering a chance of a medal in the individual event, the team event is a privilege rather than a task. "I feel good - I feel I’m well prepared and ready and I think we’ve got a really strong team,” she said.

The focus for the GB squad was the team competition – their seventh-placed finish in team qualifying ensured they have a place as one of the eight nations to have qualified for Tokyo.

“I’m proud of the team,” she said after qualifying. “I made mistakes, especially on floor, that I never usually make. It was an emotional rollercoaster but to end it so well overall is the main thing.”

Ellie said she likes the stadium in Stuttgart. The contrast of the darkness of the seating area and the well-lit stage are helps her focus, she says. The podium is a little lower but she thinks that will not be a problem.

Beckie Downie (27, Nottingham): Had two golds and a silver at the European Championships 2014-16 in the bars and also won a World Championship bronze at that time

Alice Kinsella (Essex, 18): This year’s European champion on the beam, Kinsella was also on the Commonwealth Games silver-winning team.

Georgia-Mae Fenton (Kent, 18): Her best piece of apparatus is the bars, the event she won in the Commonwealth Games.

Kelly Simm (Southampton, 24): Simm is the reserve for the team and is an all-around gymnast who won bronze with GB in 2015 at the World Championships in Glasgow. She replaces Amelie Morgan who has an ankle injury.

    What is Gymnastics?

Artistic is probably the most well-known form of gymnastics. Women tackle four activities, with men taking on six. These include the vault (run and spring over box), the rings (hoops suspended from the ceiling), the bars (parallel frames to swing between) among others. These activities involve you balancing and performing moves.

Rhythmic involves performing a routine to music whilst waving a ribbon or balancing a hula-hoop round your hands, feet or neck.

Acrobatic is the most energetic of all the types of gymnastics. You perform a routine combined of jumps, lifts or lunges, either in pairs or in a group.

Not sure what style of gymnastics is for you? With 15 different types, all with varying levels of difficulty, there is bound to be one to suit you.

British, external, Scottish, external, Welsh, external and Northern Ireland, external Gymnastics have tools to help you find the gymnastic activity that suits you.
