7 Peter Burgoyne

Just read this story about Shaun from the Herald Sun the day he played Port at Footy Park Rd 18 for the first time. It's a good article but I wanted to highlight his and Peter's movements as there are always questions asked about whether they are NT or SA boys.

Both boys qualify for SA under the state of origin rule re where you lived the majority of years between 10 and 17, if a couple of years mentioned in the story is in fact 2 years and x months.

Burgoyne was born in Darwin, the home of his mother Gabriella, but the family moved to the South Australian fishing town of Port Lincoln on the tip of Eyre Peninsula when he was five and his brother Peter was nine.

He was an Essendon supporter as a kid and idolised Michael Long and Gavin Wanganeen. When Peter, who had returned to play in Darwin for a couple of years before being coaxed back at 17, was drafted to Port, he knew he was going to do the same.

They both played for the Mallee Park Peckers - alongside his best friend Graham Johncock - with the club having a remarkable record of producing AFL players.

Also of interest was the bit on their father's movements.

In many ways, Burgoyne's father, also Peter, has been his inspiration.

"My dad didn't speak English, initially. He was born on a mission on the coast near the Western Australia-South Australia border," he explained. "His mother passed away when he was young and he moved to live with his grandma and uncle.

"He got a full-time job when he was 12 or 13 - working in the store houses, factories, stuff like that. He lived his life and then went back to get his education when he was 37.

"He did a Bachelor of Arts, Aboriginal Affairs and Administration, at the University of South Australia and then got his Masters. He also has a diploma in management services. He did all those part-time while he was working as chief executive of the Port Lincoln Aboriginal Community Council."The good thing was he was able to educate me and my brothers on the history of Australia from way back."

Good story. Way back when Peter was developing into a star, and Shaun was just a name on our list with perpetual hammy problems, I understood there was another brother around. Was that so, or was it a half brother, or was it just someone's feverish imagination?

Philip, at 5'6 he makes David Rodan look like a CHF!

This weeks Inside Football has a double page interview between David Rhys-Jones and Peter Burgoyne.

Quite a good read but it appears that at this stage he is lost to the club.

Saw Peter after the Showdown last week, can't exactly remember much of the conversation but from what I remember he's rather disenchanted with the club.

... the angst would be over the issues that led to Junior burger leaving Port?

I think part of it would be sign of the times stuff. If you aren't offered employment by your club when you finish playing these days where do you go?

It's not like the old days where club legends could turn up at the club every Saturday night and be shouted beer by people who want to piss in their pockets is it?

The tradition of a recovery beer is finished and so it seems is hanging out at the club with the supporters.

Peter didn't ever have great self confidence off the footy field and often seemed lost and even a bit panicky in big crowds. A lot of our ex players could be used in Ambassador roles for the club, especially the indigenous lads, and help get a positive message out in the general public about the Port Adelaide Football Club it wouldn't cost much and it would give these guys a sense of still belonging.
