Join us for the 2025 City Nature challenge!

CNC is kicking off on Friday, April 25 and running through Monday, April 28. You're welcome to make nature observations anywhere across either Richland or Lexington counties!

All types of observations count. We're on the lookout for any wild plant, animal, mushrooms or even signs of life such as nests, scat or roadkill! "Common" species are just as important as rare ones! The more observations we make the more biodiversity is documented. Nature wins!!

Tips for a successful ...

It's Earth Day - 3 days until the CNC!

This year is Surrey's 6th City Nature Challenge and the 10th anniversary of the CNC globally. If you are thinking about where you would like to go in Surrey to blitz for this weekend, consider working those milestones (or some combination) into your activities. Example visit 6 or 10 sites between April 25-28, or set a goal of 6, 10, or 60 fave plants, fungi and animal observations at a site.

And remember scat and tracks and other "signs" (like beaver chewed trees or branches, or c...

Earth Day - April 22

The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970.
Oil spills, polluting factories, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, and freeways were contributing to a loss of wilderness and extinction of wildlife around the world. Millions of people took to the streets demanding that environmental issues be put onto the national agenda.

Today, Earth Day is marking 55 years.
This morning, I was fortunate to be with a group of female clients from the YWCA at a tree planting event hosted...

York City Nature Challenge is fast approaching!

City Nature Challenge is returning to the Vale of York this Friday and we'd love it if you could take part again this year, where we are trying to get the most people involved observations submitted and species spotted in the UK.

The City Nature Challenge is from 25-28th April 2025, and this year York wants to build on its great success from the previous year by getting more people involved in making observations of wildlife in and around the city.

With an expanded York are...

First-Ever Menlo College Bioblitz!

Intrepid Naturalists,

In celebration of Earth Day, Professors Gordon, Kwon, and Austin kicked off Menlo College's first-ever Bioblitz experience. We learned a lot from our pilot project and will be hosting a brown bag meeting with our excellent librarians at Bowman to debrief and come up with ideas on how we can make it better in the future.

Some challenges we ran into on the first round:

Making sure that participants don't distract each other and find some quiet mo...

SPRING

So there are lots of flowers blooming, make sure to pay attention for the diversity of pollinators.
Plenty of great opportunities to snap a pic of a hover fly, parasitic wasp or mason bee.
So many great observations to make, remember to stay hydrated, monitor for signs of heat stress and wear sunscreen.

April, 22, 2025

Began walk at Kennedy pond walking from swamp to the jetty, in the way I found a fire pit which had many trees surrounding it. At the site I found numerous trees which were covered in lichens of all varieties. The main form of lichen was a crustose lichen which was a pale gray, the second form of lichen was a yellow crustose lichen which became much more vibrant under UV light. On the same tree I found a crustose lichen with red circular pieces protruding from it. I then identified foliose...

Happy Earth Day!

Did you know that invasive species are the second biggest threat to global biodiversity after habitat loss? Invasive species can be plants, animals, or microbes that are introduced into places outside their native habitat. If a species looks out of place, or if there is a dense population of a single species, it could be invasive. If you see an invasive species, report it by:

• Calling 250-360-3302
• Emailing the CRD (...

Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day fellow Earthlings!

We are just a few days out from the beginning of the City Nature Challenge and I’m here to help motivate you!

Many times, people forget about the little guys (think insects!) and they can be easy to oversee, especially when we see more obvious animals like deer or birds.

For this year’s CNC, I’m encouraging participants to also focus on the little guys, like insects. Look below you on the ground, in vegetation, in cracks and cre...

Earth Day Greetings

Odonata numbers have been increasing. We should be ready for a big increase in numbers and diversity.

We have over 200 observations so far, 8 species. Sounds pretty good, but pretty far behind 2024. A year ago at this point, we had nearly 400 observations and 17 species. But the last week of April is typically the biggest of the month. Think sunshine.

We do have 42 counties represented so far for April. This includes some contemporary observations for Ross and Washington Co...
