Anyone hoping to catch a National Express West Midlands bus from today is facing paying extra for their ticket. The cost of an adult single has rised to £2.90 per journey after previously being set at £2.

The change comes following the government changing the cap from £2 to £3. All other bus fair with the company is to remain the same, a spokesperson said.

They added that there will be no cost difference between the cost of a normal single, Outer Zones single and an Outer Zones single ticket. A statement on the National Express website answered five commonly asked questions about the price change which comes into play today (Sunday, January 5).

Why is the price increasing to £2.90 when other areas have a different single fare?

We have taken part in the government’s £2 single fare cap scheme since it was introduced in January 2023. From 1st January 2025 the government's single fare cap scheme will increase to £3 and some local areas have decided to charge a different price for single tickets. From 5th January 2025 all single tickets on National Express buses will be £2.90, which is cheaper than the government’s £3 cap.
