Mill Creek Entertainment will bring to Blu-ray Brian De Palma's The Black Dahlia (2006), starring Aaron Eckhart, Hilary Swank, Josh Hartnett, Scarlett Johansson, and Mia Kirshner. The release will be available for purchase on June 14.
Synopsis: Two cops in 1940s Los Angeles investigate the murder of a Hollywood starlet (Mia Kirshner), and one (Aaron Eckhart) puts his marriage in jeopardy by obsessing over the crime, while the other (Josh Hartnett) becomes involved with a woman (Hilary Swank) from a prominent family, who happens to have an unsavory tie to the victim.
The VC changing to MPEG wont change how it looks if the scan is not new. And thats assuming youd want this film, which I dont think many do. This is the prime example of a complete mess that could have been so much better.
If the female roles had been switched the movie would have immediately been improved 100%. Sorry, but if ever there was a mismatch between character and actress it was gawky, tomboyish Hilary Swank as a "sexy" femme fatale. She's a decent actress but when you have bombshell Scarlett Johansson right there on hand there's just no excuse. It's almost like they did it on a dare, just to be perverse...
I had a small ray of hope that some boutique label somewhere in the world would go through the effort and expense of getting the 3hr Director's Cut reassembled and released. This announcement has broken that hope down to a speck
I still like the movie, it's visually stunning, and I have the first bluray. It looks fine enough. No need to double-dip. Redacted would have been a more interesting release. I could have replaced my DVD.
Completely unnecessary release. When I eventually get this, it will be the Universal Blu-ray that I can get for $5 or less on eBay. The Universal disc isnt that bad, but Mill Creeks discs are usually a DNR festival. And the Universal disc has a few special features, when Mill Creek rarely does any. And Universal might use this Mill Creek disc to test the waters for a possible DC (just a thought, I dont have any inside knowledge or anything), but Mill Creek wont do a damn thing for this movie besides plop it on a BD-25 with a shitty transfer. The movie deserves a chance. As for the disc, its a hard pass for me.
That artwork is terrible. I understand wanting to show off the actors but yikes. I thought the movie itself was really bad though. If they ever did release a DC and it got good reviews I'd give it another shot.
Such a fascinating story so badly told. They push the Black Dahlia topic to the background and focus too much on the who-cares police story. There's still hope to do justice to the story behind Elizabeth Short. Oddly enough, I literally referenced this movie with a friend last night because of how it throws the most random character at us in the third act.
That cover art HAS to be intentionally terrible right? I mean the movie is awful so maybe they are just doubling down? Seriously, it looks like someone put it together using MS Paint in 2004; which would be weird since that's two years before the movie was even released.
