Warner Bros. has plans to release a movie-only edition of their beloved 1985 adventure comedy The Goonies. The release will come in a standard Blu-ray case and omit all of the collectible items packaged in the 25th Anniversary Edition box set.
The disc itself will be identical to the one included on the Anniversary Edition, which featured Dolby True HD 5.1 sound and a 2:40:1 aspect ratio. For a more detailed description, check out our review here.
This version of The Goonies will hit stores on October 18th with a SRP of $14.98. Pre-orders have yet to go up on Amazon, but can be made at the WB Shop (price only $8.95 with your Warner ID login). The release also features movie cash to the upcoming theatrical release of Happy Feet 2.
i am so glad i waited for this to come out i never seen this film and i seen that there was a boxset of this film already for a lot of money and all i wanted was the film itself i could careless about the stuff that comes with the film so glad this is comeing out in a single disc form for sure.
I hope Warner brothers does this with more of their titles. And other companys as well. I believe as a paying customer you should always have an option and a choice of buying what u want instead of all this unnecessary swag and sequels.
Amazon had that (very nice) 25th Ann gift set for $6 in the wee hours of 12/26/10. Not sure why they lowered it so much and for such a short period of time. Price mistake maybe(?) I ordered a couple. Still haven't opened the thing(s)!
What do you mean, "You think Warner will do this for Cuckoo's Nest?"! You've had your chance at purchasing 2 different versions of that film, a digibook & Anniversary package, and you still haven't purchased it yet? I can't tell you how many times I've seen that film for less than $15. If you haven't purchased it yet then I'd think you're likely never to be satisfied.
I just starting collecting blus not too long ago. The digibook had the butchered version of the documentary. And I was hesitant about buying the UCE cause I didn't want all that stuff for $35. I guess I'm a little more patient then most of you guys. I've also been even holding out on digibook titles cause I want the keep case versions.
Still can't figure out why Warner didn't just do this simultaneously with the box-set they released last year. By now, my guess is that almost all who support the Blu-ray format and enjoy this film, have already purchased either the box-set, or imported the region free UK Blu. It's the same disc.
Digibooks are almost as lame as collector sets. When you start a collection you want everything nice and neat. You want uniform. At least some people do. Whatever makes you happy right.
You got that right regarding digibooks. When was the last wave of digibook to keep case conversions announced? Seems like a while ago. Been holding out on KING KONG (1933), NORTH BY NORTHWEST and DR. STRANGELOVE.
I ve been holding out on at least 10 movies because of digibooks, extremely expensive collector sets and trilogys. When it comes down to trilogys its more philisophical because i dont want to own things my heart does not value.
Yeah, been waiting for the following keep cases: CUCKOO'S NEST, STRANGELOVE, NORTH BY NORTHWEST, THE HUSTLER, JOSEY WALES, PAPILLON, KING KONG and ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN. The HOW THE WEST WAS WON keep case version doesn't contain the second disc from the digibook. Gotta hold onto the digibook I guess. The only other digibook I have is THE EXORCIST.
Anyway, glad to see THE GOONIES finally coming out in a keep case. Hopefully, the next wave of digibook to keep case conversions are on their way from Warner.
Question: Are there any actual supplemental features that will be lost? I don't care about the toys of the UCE but if the UCE has special features that the single-disc won't, then that's reason enough for me, cuz I've been waiting on this classic...
Warner should have released a single disc edition day one, along with the 25th Anniversary box set. I finally picked up the box when it hit the $20 mark on sale about a month ago - took forever, for such a high profile film, and $20 is still a bit steep IMO, despite the swag. Expectedly the game is an uninspired joke; clearly no time or ingenuity went into it. They'd have done better to just throw in a pack of Goonies themed playing cards - at least those might get used more than once. The only reason I can figure that Warner waited so long to release a BD only edition is because they knew nobody would buy the "Oversized collector's Junk Edition" if they had an alternative.
This is a good deal for everyone and a great moment for this administration. You gotta hate the guy who must have pitched that Warner use "the Goonies" to plug some of the gap created this past Holiday buying season.
As I understand, this was originally slated as a single disc release as a "Target exclusive". That fell through once Warner got the notion to "bulk up" the release with all of the superfluous swag in that "ultimate collector's edition". Only those fortunate enough to get in on that Amazon early morning SNAFU last year got the release for a price that was at least sensible ($6).
I'd be okay with being forced to buy the Jurassic Park trilogy as long as the quality is great and the package has some good supplemental material attached to it. The thing about being "forced" is that you know JP1 will come as a stand-alone release eventually after. So yeah, it sucks to have to wait a little longer but it'll happen.
I totally agree with you. i think as consumers we need to put our They Live sunglasses on and see things for what they really are. For the jurrassic park trilogy people are going to shell out 40 dollars of their hard earned money for one decent film. Until more people develop better patience i dont see this disgusting trend disapearing
I've been waiting for this one for quite a while myself. I'm a 'true' fan of this film but even I couldn't see myself owning the 'Collector's edition'. This will have all the features on the discs still, right?
