Today is the first Monday in May, and you know what that means: Celebrities from all walks of fame will pose on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City tonight before slipping inside for the annual Met Gala. Officially dubbed the Metropolitan Costume Institute Gala, the gathering, held each spring, raises funds for the museum's Costume Institute, drawing quite the A-list roster in the process. And since there is no public or televised run of show, no awards to be won, and absolutely no phones allowed (does anyone really know what happens inside?), the goal of the evening (beyond philanthropy, of course!) is to be seen before it starts. Hollywood's elite step out in all kinds of fantastical outfits that meet the affair's highly anticipated theme, which is always tied to the Costume Institute's newest exhibition; this year, the official dress code, "The Garden of Time," coincides with the "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion" exhibit (hence all the florals!).
Though the Met Gala is arguably one of fashion's biggest nights out, it's also one of the best nights for celebrity couple watching. It's incredibly fun to watch some of Hollywood greatest duos tackle the theme in tandem—and even better to watch all of those sweet interactions unfold on the red-carpeted steps. Here, we're rounding up all of the A-list pairs, from host Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky to Queen Latifah and Eboni Nichols who turned the 2024 Met Gala into their own personal date night.
Charles Shaffer and Elizabeth Cordry Shaffer
Vogue's Global Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour helms the Meta Gala, which is arguably her biggest project of the year. Her son Charles Shaffer and his wife Elizabeth Cordry Shaffer (in a belted floral gown that we think would make a stunning springtime wedding dress) were among the first guests to arrive on-site to show their support—and walk the beige and green carpet—at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 6, 2024.
Francesco Carrozzini and Bee Carrozzini
Wintour's daughter, Bee Carrozzini, was right behind her brother. She also attended her mother's big night out, wearing a black and white lace number with a high neckline that perfectly coordinated with her husband Francesco Carrozzini's tuxedo. The couple tied the knot in 2018 and share a son, who they welcomed in 2021.
Reverend Al Sharpton and Aisha McShaw
Reverend Al Sharpton, a civil rights activist and MSNBC commentator, and his partner of seven years, Aisha McShaw, turned the Met Gala into a date night on May 6. McShaw's off-the-shoulder green gown featured a voluminous rosette at the hip; Sharpton looked particularly dapper in a high-sheen tuxedo jacket.
Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky
Co-host Chris Hemsworth hit the Met steps looking like a groom in white! He kept his look casual overall, letting his wife of 24 years, Elsa Pataky, shine—literally. She arrived in a head-to-toe gold ensemble, complete with a gilded flower crown. Together, they looked like they stepped right out of a Disney film—which is fitting, when you consider the Costume Institute's new exhibit, "Sleeping Beauties," the focal point of tonight's event.
Kris Jenner and Corey Gamble
The Kardashian-Jenner matriarch and her long-time partner made a splash on the red carpet in coordinating all-white ensembles. Jenner's cape featured oversized floral appliqués at the collar and she accessorized with emerald stones—a nod to the natural garden theme. Though she was on the arm of her boyfriend, her girls were at the front of her mind. "We'll get to see the kids in a little while," she teased during a red-carpet interview.
Matt Damon and Luciana Damon
Luciana Damon arrived in the first decidedly bridal look of the night, wearing a slinky strapless white number with a textured bodice and one of our favorite bridal fashion trends right now—a neck scarf. Together, she and Matt Damon looked like the quintessential bride and groom.
Leonardo Del Vecchio and Jessica Serfaty Michel
Days of Our Lives actress Jessica Serfaty Michel and her soon-to-be husband, Italian billionaire Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio, brought instant thematic color to the Met Gala's neutral red carpet. Pom-pom flowers covered the entirety of the soap star's cape ensemble; her fiancé of one year (the pair got engaged last July) opted for a retro-inspired burgundy suit.
Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin
Film director Baz Luhrmann and his wife and creative partner Catherine Martin, who is a costume, production, and set designer, leaned into the garden theme with their cohesive all-green ensembles. Luhrmann opted for a silvery suit with floral appliqués over the left shoulder, while Martin stunned in an emerald gown with dandelion motifs, a jeweled collar and cuffs, and matching glasses.
Taika Waititi and Rita Ora
Taika Waititi and Rita Ora (who proposed to her now-husband a few years ago!) cozied up on the cream and green carpet tonight. Ora's look was one of the most intricate of the night; it featured strands of beads "that are older than anyone on this planet" from the first and second centuries B.C., she explained during an interview.
Seth Meyers and Alexi Ashe
The Late Night with Seth Meyers host and his wife of nine years loosely and simply tackled the "Garden of Time" theme. "Whatever the theme, I always wear a tuxedo," Meyers said during an interview on the red carpet. "Our theme is always two parents who left our kids at home."
Queen Latifah and Eboni Nichols
Queen Latifah and Eboni Nichols have been partners since 2013, and made their Met Gala debut in equally epic overcoats. The actress, rapper, and singer styled hers over a jumpsuit with bold floral motifs, while Nichols' coat featured a checked pattern and structural silhouette.
James Corden and Julia Carey
The second late-night talk show host to arrive on the Met Gala red carpet, James Corden carefully escorted his wife, TV producer Julia Carey, up the museum's steps. Her pink frock featured a high neckline and cream and green floral appliqués; our favorite detail, though, was the extended train (so bridal!).
Matthew Macfadyen and Keeley Hawes
Succession star Matthew Macfadyen and his wife, actress and producer Keeley Hawes, walked the Met steps hand-in-hand. The couple, who has been married for over 10 years, first met on the set of the BBC spy drama Spooks and today, share two children, Maggie and Ralph.
Sam Smith and Christian Cowan
Sam Smith and his boyfriend, Christian Cowan, may have opted for different colors and styles for their Met Gala attire, but one on-theme accessory tied their ensembles together: a gilded rose stem, which was tucked into opposite sides of their jackets.
Adrien Brody and Georgina Chapman
Actor Adrien Brody and Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman made their relationship official on a red carpet in 2021, during the Tribeca Film Festival—and they reprised that debut on the museum's steps during the 2024 Met Gala. They were yet another duo dressed simply in black and white.
Eddie Redmayne and Hannah Bagshawe
Black and white ensembles have been the couple's trend of the night, but actors and spouses Eddie Redmayne and Hannah Bagshawe kicked it up a notch in outfits (literally) cut from the same cloth. Their abstract ensembles were entirely complementary.
Jeremy Strong and Emma Wall
Another Succession actor hit the red carpet this evening: Jeremy Strong escorted his wife, psychiatrist Emma Wall (they met at a party in New York during Hurricane Sandy) up the steps. They were also the second pair of the night to dress entirely in white—and we loved the actor's alternative to a bow tie (a rosette!).
Damiano David and Dove Cameron
After the rumor mill suggested these two were a couple towards the end of 2023, actor and singer Dove Cameron and vocalist Damiano David made the rounds on award show red carpets earlier this year. They're back for the Met Gala—and looked particularly cozy this evening. Cameron opted for a boho-inspired floral number, while David chose a sheer black suit that showed off his tattoos.
Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have been married since 2006—but you'd think they were newlyweds, based on how sweet they were together on the Met Gala red carpet. The country music singer was quick to give the five-time Oscar winner her moment in the limelight to show off her bridal-adjacent black and white gown, which she styled with extra-long gloves.
Alexander Dreymon and Allison Williams
After these actors met on the set of their film Horizon Line, their chemistry moved off-screen. In 2021, they quietly welcomed a baby boy (though they didn't share the happy with the news until 2022). Later that year, Dreymon, known for his role in Netflix's The Lost Kingdom, proposed to Williams, who first rose to fame on Girls. They're quite private, so it was a rare treat to see the engaged pair together on the Met Gala red carpet.
Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union
Spouses Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union gave major mermaid vibes during fashion's biggest night out. We love how the top of the actress' gown spoke to the former basketball player's lavender suit.
Kiernan Culkin and Jazz Charton
The Meta Gala pre-show was a Succession reunion! Kiernan Culkin hit the green carpet at the end of the evening with his wife, Jazz Charton, who was dressed in a lemon-yellow gown with floral appliqués and a high slit. The actor accessorized his watercolor suit with a gemstone necklace and salmon loafers.
Chase Stokes and Kelsea Ballerini
According to Outer Banks actor Chase Stokes, he and country music star Kelsea Ballerini were actually on a date when they found out that they'd been invited to the Met Gala—their first—together. "I was on the way to the aquarium with my girlfriend and we got the call. I was like, ‘Oh my God, we're going to the Met,’” he told People earlier today.
Nnamdi Asomugha and Kerry Washington
Though actress Kerry Washington, dressed in a plum gown with butterfly details that realistically fluttered when she walked, posed on the Met Gala's carpet towards the end of the festivities, her husband, Nnamdi Asomugha, snuck in at the very end. He let her have her moment, before quickly sweeping his wife of nine years indoors.
Ben Platt and Noah Galvin
Fiancés Ben Platt and Noah Galvin turned the Meta Gala into a milestone birthday celebration. Today marks Galvin's 30th birthday—and a few short hours ago, before the evening's prep began, Platt took some time to pen a sweet note to his partner. "Happy 30th birthday to my favorite person in the world," he wrote on Instagram. "I can’t wait to marry you this year and spend the rest of my life across the table from you."
