Supersized Blazers

In a shock to absolutely no one, oversized blazers (commonly referred to as boyfriend blazers) remain a popular trend for fall and winter 2023. “They are the perfect contrast from the original styling perspective of workwear and blazers being structured, tailored, professional, and unassuming," says New York City-based fashion stylist Audree Kate López. "With an oversized blazer, it feels less corporate and more ‘I just threw this on while walking out my door.’”

Love the look? Consider the Re Ona Joey Oversized Blazer, H&M Double-Breasted Jacket, or Na-Kd Maxi Oversized PU Blazer.

Styling Tip: “Fall and winter fashion can sometimes feel monotonous if you’re constantly throwing on a jacket over your outfit, so instead of wearing the same puffer coat every day, style an oversized blazer over a sweater, leather jacket, or cardigan,” López says. “It’s oversized enough to act as a jacket, and you have room to layer multiple layers underneath.”

Structured Shoulders

While many oversized blazers exist nowadays, López points out that structured shoulders are especially hip. “When oversized blazers re-entered the scene a few years ago, structured shoulders and shoulder pads were not as easily accepted—maybe it felt dated, too '80s, or bulky—but over the past two years, we have seen super structured, oversized, and pointed shoulders appear on the runway,” she says. “It adds structure to the oversized blazers, creating the illusion of a smaller waist/hourglass figure, and these small details add a point of tailored elegance to the look. That’s not to say structured shoulders only work with oversized silhouettes, though—they look fab in cropped and more fitted blazers, too.”

Craving a structured shoulder? Check out the Camila Coelho Morena Blazer, Sanctuary Bridget Blazer, or Sergio Hudson Cropped Frame Jacket.

Styling Tip: “I would pair a structured-shoulder blazer with a straight leg, tapers, or a mini flare leg to balance the shoulders out,” López says. “Avoid anything too flowy or baggy, such as wide leg pants.”

Belted Blazers

You know what they say: What goes around comes around—and in the fashion world, that means that belted blazers are back. “As we re-enter 2010s fashion, we have seen belted tops, blazers, and peplum silhouettes appear,” López says. “If the oversized boxy blazer isn’t for you, try a blazer with a built-in belt, cord, tie or sash. This will accentuate the waistline and make the blazer feel more feminine and romantic versus boardroom.”

If you're thinking about adding this silhouette to your closet, be sure to peruse trending styles for sale like the Bardot Belted Blazer, Express Satin Tie Waist Blazer, and L'Agence Wrap Belted Blazer.

Styling Tip: Belted blazers pair well with just about anything. “This silhouette is great over any denim, dress pants, or a slip skirt or dress,” López tells us.

Pop of Dopamine

It’s a common misconception that you have to dress in accordance with the colors of the season. While wearing rich fall and winter hues is definitely alluring at times, López assures us that embracing a bold pop of color during the colder seasons won’t get you nixed from the best-dressed list. “A pop of color in the outfit can brighten your mood and add the perfect contrast to the dreary weather rotation of jeans, sweaters, and boots,” she says.

Fun colors aren’t the only way to add a hit of dopamine to your trend-forward blazer look, though: Fashion designer and Never Fully Dressed founder Lucy Aylen says that opting for unique textures can enhance the look, too. Her top picks? Sequined blazers that “sparkle like a disco ball,” velvet styles that look instantly party-ready, and jacquard options that appear undeniably refined.

To add a dopamine-enhancing blazer to your collection of clothes, check out the Never Fully Dressed Emerald Velvet Quinn Blazer, the Lovers and Friends x Rachel Hadley Blazer, and the Dolan Left Coast Faux Leather Boyfriend Blazer.

Styling Tip: When opting for this winter blazer trend, it’s best to let the dopamine-boosting details steal the show. That means it's ideal to pair your blazer with neutral or solid colors, as well as classic textiles like denim and silk. But don’t feel trapped: If you want to layer an eye-catching sequin blazer over a vivid or textured top, go right ahead. If you want to wear it over nothing at all, Aylen says not to shy away from the idea, as it will “allow the plunge neckline to shine.” All this goes to say that the only style rule you should ever follow is to be true to yourself.

'80s Blazer

While oversized and structured-shoulder blazers both fall within the ‘80s blazer category, López highlights there’s another key iteration of the trend. “‘80s blazers are not new to the scene, but a newer silhouette is this classic corporate power suit blazer with three buttons, a shorter lapel, and a softer silhouette versus the structured shoulder pad, angular, colorful, and embellished ‘80s fashion blazer,” she says. “This is a softer approach to the oversized, statement blazer.”

If you're a fan of the retro style, consider the Shona Joy Birilla Oversized Blazer or the Remain Suede Oversize Blazer.

Styling Tip: Love blazers so much that you want to wear them well beyond the office? The ‘80s blazer is the perfect pick. “This blazer is great for a casual look with denim, sneakers, and a classic top,” López says. “It's giving Princess Diana meets Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy.”

Leather Blazer

While most blazers are in linen, cotton, and wool blends, leather blazers are a popular trend as of late. “The younger sister of the beloved leather jacket is the leather blazer,” López says. “She’s more high-fashion, less dive bar, and can be dressed up for work, a date night, and everything in between.” Additionally, while most leather jackets are primarily available in black or other dark hues, López points out that leather blazers are available in a variety of fun colors: “This season, we have also seen colorful leather versus just black, and various silhouettes from fitted and an oversized ‘80s/’90s boxy look to a sleek The Matrix/Y2K feel.”

Craving a fun pop of color? Check out the Milly Alexa Crinkled Faux Leather Blazer and the Lala My Muse Is Me Metallic Blazer. If you prefer neutral shades, consider the Eloquii Faux Leather Cinched Waist Double Breasted Blazer or the Autumn Adeigbo Amelie Jacket.

Styling Tip: When styling a leather blazer, López says to reach for base layers in silk, denim, or more leather, whether in the form of pants, skirts, tops, or dresses.

Two-Toned and Mixed Prints

If you're a maximalist and/or wish you could rock multiple looks at once, you’ll be glad to know that two-toned and mixed-print blazers are trending for winter 2023. “One of my favorite blazer trends this year is two-toned, mixed print blazers,” López says. “We’ve seen two-tone pieces pop up over the past couple of years with thrift flips, vintage reconstruction, and dopamine dressing, but it’s hit the mainstream with blazers of multiple prints, textures, patterns, and colors.”

Many two-toned blazers exist, but some of our favorites include the Bardot Spliced Check Blazer, the Avec Les Filles Mixed Plaid Menswear Blazer, and the Rails Cody Blazer.

Styling Tip: Given the busy nature of two-toned and mixed-print blazers, López says they're best for when you want to stand out. “I love this as a statement piece because it’s a conversation starter, a great way to mix and match color throughout the outfit, and feels fresh [compared[ to the standard neutral, plaid, or pinstripe blazers we all have acquired over the past few years,” she says. To let it really shine, pair your two-toned blazer with solid pieces so it doesn’t have to compete for attention.

Hourglass Structure

Now that peplum silhouettes are back, there’s no doubt that waist-accentuating outerwear will be on the rise this winter, too. “Like it or not, peplum silhouettes are sneaking their way back into fashion, but this time, I’m here for it,” López says. “It’s not giving 2010s club dress—it’s a sophisticated hourglass silhouette that adds waist definition and structure, but also the effortless feel of the oversized blazer trend.”

Thinking this is the ideal blazer style for you? Take a peek at the Open Edit Hourglass Blazer, the L'Academie Matu Blazer Top, and the Smythe Hunting Blazer.

Styling Tip: There are many ways to wear an hourglass blazer, so experiment with whatever looks inspire you. “This blazer pairs great with a full, A-line skirt to elongate the silhouette, or you can contrast it with straight-leg denim, ballet flats, or loafers,” López says.

Double-Breasted Blazer

Double-breasted blazers may have been long reserved for traditional suiting, but here in 2023, they’re visible in countless runway looks on some of the world’s top models. “Double-breasted blazers have made their mark on runways and in street style over the past couple of years and are only gaining momentum this season,” López says. “Menswear has greatly influenced the workwear dressing in fashion, and a double-breasted blazer adds structure to the angular silhouette of the ‘80s blazer, statement shoulder, and the cinched-waist/peplum resurgence.”

Aylen agrees. “A double-breasted blazer adds such a polished and refined touch to any outfit, with a soft tailoring look,” she says. “Paired with matching trousers, it makes a gorgeous alternative to a wedding guest dress.”

A few of our favorite double-breasted blazers include the Good American High Shine Compression Sculpted Blazer, the Bishop + Young Parker Blazer, and the Le Superbe David Boa Jacket.

Styling Tip: If you opt for a double-breasted blazer, López suggests choosing an oversized silhouette for the most versatility. “You can wear it undone for a more oversized, casual look or button it up for a tailored suit look—[you can even wear it as] a fitted mini dress,” she says.

Cropped Blazers

As much as the fact that every single top seems to be cropped these days can frustrate us (a little variation, please), there’s no denying that cropped blazers are a major trend for winter 2023. “Silhouettes are slowly becoming more tailored, fitted, and shorter,” López says, noting that cropped blazers are emerging. “If you’re petite or hate the oversized blazer look, this is a great way to partake in the trend on a more palatable level.”

Looking for recs that keep the silhouette short and sweet? Consider the LaQuan Smith Double Breasted Cropped Tuxedo Blazer, the Line & Dot Dixie Cropped Blazer, or the Mother The Blaze of Glory Blazer.

Styling Tip: To balance out the proportions of a cropped blazer, López says to pair it with high-waisted bottoms, whether you prefer a matching skirt or denim. Another option? “Layer it over a midi or maxi dress,” she suggests.
