Restaurant relocating after building sale

Local barbecue spot High Country BBQ is asking the community for help finding a new home. With their location on Charles Street sold unexpectedly, they’re hoping to find a new location so they can stay open in BV.

“We opened in 2021 in Fairplay with our food truck,” said owner Jan Street. “We liked Buena Vista so much that we moved from Fairplay and had our food truck by Rally Liquor for a while. “When that coffee shop closed, the owner offered us the spot because he wanted a restaurant there. We’ve been in that property ever since.”

Now, however, the building has been sold. Street says the new owners plan to put in a coffee shop.

“We knew he was going to sell it, but we didn’t know he had a contract signed or anything,” she said. “Now, we’re kind of in a pickle.”

While they’d like to use to Stoke building on U.S. 50, they don’t need the whole space.

“We don’t need much (space), maybe 1500 feet,” she said. “We’re an easy peasy laidback atmosphere.”

Street says she and her family love the valley and don’t want to leave.

“We have a son that goes to Fairplay, and he’s got colleges looking at him for football, so we can’t leave for at least another year,” she said. “We love serving the community, and we’re all about family. We want to always make people feel like they’re part of our family.

“We love seeing people enjoy food and leave with smiles,” she said. “We were kind of blindsighted. But it is what it is, gotta take the good and the bad and keep moving forward. I just hope we can stay in the area.”

Street also made a post on Facebook asking the community for help, which garnered dozens of comments in less than an hour.

“It’s just amazing how the community always steps up to see if they can help,” she said. “They always provide feedback, honesty. They try to do their best to help us as they can.”
