All In for KMS Students!

The Issue

Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg High School students need full in-person learning now! As students at KMS we have suffered the consequences of leaders that are mainly looking to control the spread of COVID-19 and not the overall wellbeing of all their students. COVID is not the only evil lurking in the hallways. Our psychological well-being is significantly impacted by only being in school two to three-days a week. When students are not physically in the classroom, they are not engaged in the activities they otherwise would have been if they were to be in person. Such as asking and answering questions, and simply being able to focus on the task at hand. In order for students like us to succeed in the future and the real world we need a proper education. Otherwise, we will not successfully make it to our next step in life.

Students test scores and grades all across Minnesota and the United States have been declining to numbers that should scare anyone who cares about their child’s future. For example, according to a Kare 11 Investigates report, they found that for the 1st quarter of 2020 the failing grades among students not in school full time was double or even triple the number of failing grades they saw in the 1st quarter in 2019! Forrest Lake Area High School saw that in the 1st quarter of the 2019-2020 school year the failing rate was just 4%. But for the 1st quarter of the 2020-2021 school year the failing grades shot up to 14% for hybrid “learners” and 29% for distance “learners.” Worthington Schools saw staggeringly high failing grades in middle school classes reaching up to as high as 52%. Bagley Schools reported that 35% of high school grades were F’s this year. That is double the number of failing grades compared to last fall. Lastly, in St. Paul 32% of first quarter grades for 6th-12th graders were failing. That is up almost triple compared to last year’s 12%!

It is not just the students grades that are suffering. Mental health issues across Minnesota are growing to astonishingly high numbers. According to a Fox 9 report in Minnesota alone during the first 6 months of the year The Minnesota Department of Health announced that overdoses have increased 31% compared to the same time period in 2019!

Below are some other issues that go along with not being in school for in-person learning.

1) It is not just the students suffering either. Every teacher now has to teach two classrooms at once. One online and another in person.

2) For some students at KMS and across the country, school is one of the only safe places for them.

3) Social situations and development.

4) Phycological and mental health.

With hybrid or full distance learning students don't receive the necessary education or social development to help them grow and mature to become the best versions of themselves.
