Savannah Elementary- Improve our Children's Learning Experience and School Conditions
Savannah Elementary- Improve our Children's Learning Experience and School Conditions
The Issue
Savannah is a small supportive community that takes pride in not only our neighborhood but in our school Savannah Elementary.
Hundreds of our children attend Savannah and the parents volunteer in the classrooms, participate in the PTA, support events, donate through the various fundraisers and support the school however we can.
Savannah Elementary currently has and has had some wonderful teachers that truly care about the well being about the students however it seems beyond the teachers there is a breakdown. For years, the lack of communication from the school leadership, the inability to fix issues, brushing issues under the "carpet" to make the school look good and the decline in support for the teachers and school maintenance is shocking.
Families are choosing to remove their children from the school to attend other schools, to home school or in some extreme cases moving from the area.
Each year a survey is shared with the parents of the district but no follow up or actions are taken. As parents of students of Savannah we would like:
1) More leadership over site into the issues brought to the schools attention by parents, teachers and administrators to ensure they are being handled appropriately and in a timely manner.
2) Any reports of bullying to be collected and reported to someone at the district level to make sure they are being documented and handled appropriately.
3) Review of the school restroom and janitorial services as concerns have have been raised about unsanitary conditions in the restroom and water fountains especially.
4) More support and resources for the teachers. They are overwhelmed with large class sizes, students who require additional attention and this distracts from teaching time. Each year Savannah Elementary loses wonderful teachers due to the frustration they experience with school administrators and our children's education suffer.
5) A recommendation for a town hall with District Leadership at least once a year with the parents and teachers of Savannah to get timely feedback and to share updates with the school on issues brought up during the survey, brought to the school and/or districts attention.
There are so many wonderful administrators and teachers at Savannah Elementary and the more support we can provide to them will ensure they return to the school and not look in other districts for employment.
We look forward to working together to make Savannah Elementary a better learning environment for our children, supporting the students, administrators and teachers and making the community overall a better place.
