The most dangerous crime ridden ghetto city in California (San Francisco: best town, college)

i hate to resurrect an old thread, but i'm surprised at little has been said of san bernardino city in here. ive been all over california. from the bay area to san diego and pretty much every major/mid size city in the state you can think of. for the most part, california doesn't have 'slums' like chicago, philadelphia or cleveland, but there is cities where its pretty damn bad.

from the top of my head, san bernadino is definitely one of the worst cities in the state, and the only place i remember that looks truly abandoned and semi-reminiscent of what i've seen in chicago and cleveland more recently. people dont call it "detroit west" for nothing. it really is like a mini detroit with palm trees. in california, north richmond is probably the most similar in terms of blight and decay.

though, imo, san bernardino's has the most unsightly neighborhoods in the state. there are things there which you simply do not see in other similarly sized cities in the state.

now as far as crime is concerned, san bernardino has historically -- for the past 30 years or so -- consistently landed within the top 5 most "dangerous" california cities, which is typically comprised of richmond, compton, oakland, san bernardino and inglewood, in varying order. it also placed in the FBI's top 25 most dangerous list numerous times over the past several years, though i think the city finally managed to inch away from the list in 2007 and hasn't been on it since.

san bernardino was listed by forbes magazine, based an FBI report, as the most dangerous california city back in 1996. though, as with many cities in the state and country, crime has plummeted in san bernardino in recent years. it's still very much a high crime city, however.

for instance in 2012, san bernardino experienced a spate of 13 homicides in a span of 19 days during the month of may, most of them centered along the feldheym section in central san bernardino which has a population of less than 20k. however, overall murder rate has dropped significantly from 20 - 25 years ago, when it was exponentially higher.

i was living in the florence section of south los angeles at a time when crime was peaking in that city, and later moved to san bernardino for about 3 years. the sun didn't shine any brighter out there. where i lived there was a different gang in every direction, and killings and violence happened on a daily basis. i lived in the little zion manor right next to the delmann heights neighborhood and all of the gangs in that area were shooting and killing each other, and drug usage and prostitution was rampant.

i remember reading the papers at the time, and if i recall correctly, san bernardino was mentioned in a report as ranking 5th nationally for highest murder rates at the time (1991 or 1992, if i recall correctly) and this was murder rate, not just overall crime rate. in 1993 they had the 9th highest murder rate in country. it was bad. easily as bad as anything i had experienced in south central los angeles, but it seemed worse simply because san bernardino had a lot more blight than i had seen in los angeles at the time.

other cities in california that were very bad at the time and which get little to no mention in these types of discussions are hunters point in SF, and east palo alto.

I didn't vote on any of the cities listed and honestly don't think any city is more dangerous than another.

You roam around the wrong neighborhood in any city, you take a chance of becoming a victim. If you have the right mindset and know how to talk to people, you'd be surprised how much BS you can avoid. Even then, there will be times when a situation can't be avoided. In that case, your safety is YOUR responsibility.

As far as property crimes go, you can live in the nicest neighborhood in California and still have your home or vehicle broken into.

If you get involved with retards, then don't be surprised when your house gets firebombed or someone lights up your house with AK's.

I feel like California has a higher concentration of mod cutcriminals, and the California government promotes an environment for those retards to flourish.

Yes! I worked in downtown San Bernardino for two years and I would never stay there a minute after work. I would not stay there too late ever. The place is full of crackheads, gang members, drug dealers, and is downright depressing. Its the worst.

Oakland and Richmond are the worse for NorCal. Compton and San Bernardino in SoCal. Stockton and Modesto for CenCal. However, the San Joaquin Valley is just the bits in general. Visalia and Merced are probably the best towns in the San Joaquin Valley.
