I keep asking, but can’t find out or understand, what is happening to America.

Oh, the audacity of Joseph Rebar. In the first paragraph of his Jan. 1 letter, he invites me to stop reading if I think his following words may annoy me. But, I thought, what the heck, I’ll keep going to see what he is talking about.

I agree with Fritz Heinemann (Dec. 19) that our response to election losses ought to be “resilience, maturity, and ... ‘rolling with the punches.’”

On Jan. 3, editorial cartoonist Ann Telnaes of The Washington Post announced to the world on Substack that she was quitting her job — a position she’s held since 2008.

I was formerly pastor of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Lewisburg for 28 years. Jim and Elva Johnson, of Lewisburg, enjoyed talking with former President Carter in Plains, Georgia, 20 years ago when we visited the church where Jimmy Carter taught Sunday School for many years.

I find it interesting that Mr. Kendall found one claim in one of my previous letters amusing (Dec. 7). I believe Mr. Kendall is feeling foolish since I feel it is safe to assume he voted for Kamala Harris. I find it amusing that this is what he had to pick out to criticize.

Well, it seems as though I have a follower who reads my letters to the editor but has blinders, similar to those a horse wears. So he can only see straight ahead and forgets there are roads to the right and left of traffic.

According to a recent report, poor and working-class taxpayers pay a larger percentage of their incomes for taxes than wealthier taxpayers. Hence, they are not being taxed according to their ability to pay, and this is wrong. What’s the remedy for this inequity?

Can you imagine your body being bred just to be killed for your fur, leather, skins, fins, etc? Millions of animals are tortured and killed every year just to make coats, scarves, gloves, handbags, down pillows and blankets, trinkets, pet toys and more.

Perhaps I decided how to vote too quickly. Perhaps I was unhappy with the final outcome. Perhaps there is a bipartisan change a-brewin.’

Fritz Heinemann (My Turn, Dec. 19) makes some observations about how different people deal with challenges to their perception of how things should be. He noted a lack of “resilience” and “maturity” ascribed to people seeking “safe spaces” and “refusing service” to members of the new adminis…

If we would just read the constitution, we’d realize President Donald Trump cannot legally hold office and we are being deflected and gaslighted into accepting someone who is disqualified and unacceptable.

In a recent My Turn (Dec. 19), Fritz Heinemann deplores post-election behavior that he claims put our “collective character to the test.”

I pledge Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

The assault on federal employees by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, both non-elected officials appointed by in-coming President Trump to a new entity called the Department of Government Efficiency, is becoming relentless. Therefore, here are a couple facts concerning federal employment and th…

The Lewisburg Sunset Rotary Club is proud to bring community events to our area.

In the political world those who vehemently oppose the actions, policies and character of Donald Trump are often accused of being afflicted with a malady called TDS, Trump Derangement Syndrome.

As another election season concludes, we extend our sincerest gratitude to the many individuals whose dedication makes the process possible. From elections staff to poll workers, and county employees working behind the scenes, their efforts ensure that our elections are secure, accurate, fai…

What amazing words I read in today’s paper, “And let me add that I truly hope Donald Trump has a positive and remarkable presidency.”

Northumberland County Commissioners Sam Scicchitano and Joe Klebon owe the taxpayers a public apology for lying about the financial condition of county government. During their 2023 reelection campaign and for years before they told our citizens that the county finances were adequate and tha…

For all those who are now thinking that the murder of the president of UnitedHealthcare in New York will somehow lead to any major changes in this country’s health care system — think again.

I have been away and just received my mail this week. In that mail I found an anonymous letter, gloating over the election result for president. The sender’s scorn, malicious satisfaction, gratification and delight were made very obvious. It also contained a picture of an American flag with …

I just finished reading today’s issue of The Daily Item (Dec. 7) where there was no mention of today being the anniversary of Pearl Harbor.

When Joe Biden said he would not pardon his son, Biden had no inkling that a convicted felon who vowed to take revenge on the people who opposed him would be voted back into power. At that point Biden, like any loving father, realized he had to protect his son from a vindictive man.

While attending the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro last month, President Joe Biden pledged $4 billion to the World’s International Development Association. On Dec. 3, Biden pledged $1 billion to Angola and most recently pledged another $1 billion in aid to Ukraine. As of Sept. 30, 2024, a tota…

When Northumberland County was offered help with its fiscal predicament from Vinny Clausi, his offer was rejected by the majority of the people.

One recent step by Elon Musk, apparently as part of his prominent role in transition activities of the incoming Trump administration, was to publicly release the names of particular public civil servants on X (formerly Twitter) whom he plans to cut from federal government employment.

I was amused by letter writers Michael Brezgel and Marcia Rebuck. Both claim that U.S. citizens overwhelmingly voted to return Mr. Trump to the White House.

Right now, most Pennsylvania schools are powered by fossil fuels that pollute our air, make people sick and contribute to climate change. Currently only 5 percent of the schools are powered by solar energy despite its ability to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and increase resilience to th…

To the citizens of Northumberland County — I would like them to be aware of a tax relief bill designed to extend property tax relief across Pennsylvania through the Longtime Owner Occupant Program (LOOPS).

It was reported that Joe’s son got special privileges and that he “drank heavily almost every day, didn’t turn up for work for weeks on end, and couldn’t leave the women alone.”

It takes all kinds to run this country. Professors and “deplorables.” Doctors and welders. Administrators and janitors. It is a country of working women; working people of color and working immigrants.

It was a show of kindness for The Daily Item to report a press release from the Hospital and Healthsystems Association of Pennsylvania on the front page as if it were real news. (“Pa. hospitals promote economic impact amid rising fiscal woes,” Nov. 21.)

At last, I can finally feel a sense of relief, and optimism, answered prayers and more. There’s finally going to be a grown-up in the White House, and a bright future for everyone, most of all, so many “true patriots” made their voices heard throughout the nation.

I was disturbed by news (CNN, Nov. 27) that Elon Musk had reposted on X messages that gave out the names and other private information of individual federal civil servants.

Nov. 5, 2024, was a great day for the citizens of the United States for several reasons.

First, full disclosure — I am now a registered independent, although for many years prior, I was a registered Republican. I voted for Kamala Harris in this past election because our democracy and an individual’s personal character were higher on my priority list than the economy or the borde…

My worst fear is losing what has made my country the greatest country in the world. It’s been chipped away at for so long, by a pathological liar, a convicted criminal, facing three or more criminal indictments, a racist, a rapist, an insurrectionist who plans retribution, re-elected as our …

What did the 16th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution do? It empowered the Congress to enact legislation enabling the federal government to levy a tax, based on a taxpayer’s ability to pay, a graduated income tax.

This weekend, I attended Selinsgrove Area High School’s excellent production of Reginald Rose’s “12 Angry Jurors.”
