The Port Vila Mayor, Jenny Tasale Regenvanu, has urged residents to take responsibility to help maintain order and clean up after the earthquake.
People should not always reply on police to maintain order in communities, she said in a statement. She appealed to church leaders, chiefs and parents to help prevent bad behaviours such as drinking alcohol and other issues like littering, and throwing stones at vehicles.
The Lady Mayor urged all citizens to also take responsibility for keeping their areas and the town clean. She wants everyone to take time to clean both the inside and outside of their yards, as well as the sides of the roads.
She assured that the Port Vila City Council (PVCC) is working with private contractors to improve rubbish collection.
Mayor Regenvanu apologised to the businesses that were damaged and affected their operations. For those located in the Central Business District (CBD), she said they should relocate to another building until the authorities complete their assessment and give guidance.
She also urged all business owners in the CBD to consult with an engineer first and obtain approval from the National Recovery Committee before they can return to their buildings.
Regenvanu thanked everyone who helped during the response efforts, especially the Vanuatu Police Force, members of the force from countries like Australia, New Zealand and France, ProRescue and ProMedical, private companies and businesses, health workers at hospitals and clinics, government and city council workers, including the engineers.
She wishes every family in Port Vila and throughout Vanuatu a safe 2025.
Currently, the CBD in the capital is still closed to the public as building assessment continues.
