Our Children Need Us - Autism Rates Rise

What critical health condition is 1 in 28 according to data published by the CDC last month?
Autism. The rate of autism in boys is now 1 in 28.
This is a national health crisis. We need to dedicate more resources, funding and attention to the prevention, treatment and care of people with autism and developmental disabilities. Help our children. Do your research. They need us.

The Big Why

Why are you losing weight?

Why are you eating healthier?

Why are you exercising?

Do you know why?

When trying to make a change it’s always hard to stay on track. Most people set a weight loss goal such as losing 15 lbs. and try whatever is the latest and greatest fad diet, which often includes pretty extreme caloric restriction. It’s not easy, and they feel deprived most of the time but the weight starts to fall off. Eventually they reach their weight loss goal!

The problem that arises is that the diet is not sustainable. Once they hit their goal, their pre-diet lifestyle starts to creep back and the weight comes back just as fast as it fell off. Sometimes with a few extra pounds. Research has shown the more times people diet, the more weight that they eventually gain.

Making a lifestyle change shouldn’t be for weight loss, it should be for long term health. Weight gain year after year increases the risk of all sorts of diseases including heart disease to diabetes to cancer.

Determining why you want to change your lifestyle is the most important aspect of making a long term change.

Do you want to be able to do your own yard work as you age?

Be healthy enough to play with your grandkids?

Prevent deadly conditions such as cancer, diabetes or heart disease?

Find your why that is bigger than your weight loss goal.

Inspiration: "if you give 100% all of the time, somehow things will workout in the end"

"I've got a theory that if you give 100% all of the time, somehow things will workout in the end." -Larry Bird

I stole this quote from my friend Jeff Janis and former Kehres Health & Chiropractic intern, who plays for The Green Bay Packers. This philosophy seemed to workout for him pretty well so far!

If you are going to do something, you might as well put everything you have into it or you are probably just going to waste your time and end up frustrated. If you give it everything you have and it fails, a least you have no regrets!

Inspiration: Opportunity

Many people talk about how they never "got the opportunity," to do something in life but in most cases it's not just something that comes to you. You need to go out and create your own opportunities.

Opportunity does not come to people sitting on the couch watching TV every night.

It comes to those who are out looking for it... the athlete who trains hard in the off season. The kid walking around the neighborhood with a shovel every time it snows. The employee that works an extra hour off the clock to finish a project. The person who takes the time to make their health a priority.

It could take two months or 20 years, but opportunity will come when you are out looking for it.

Inspiration: Making a big life change is pretty scary. But, know what's even scarier? Regret.

"Making a big life change is pretty scary. But, know what's even scarier? Regret."

Make your health a priority. That is a regret you never want to have.

Inspiration: RS Trust

Marrianne in an eksoskeleton
This is one of the most amazing and inspirational videos I've ever seen, especially since I know Marrianne personally. Every time my wife and I go to England we meet up with her and her fiancé Andy who made this video. She is one of the most positive and inspirational people I have ever met.

Watch the video here.

In 2004, Marrianne was paralyzed from the shoulders down in an auto accident and this video shows her amazing progress.

In 2005, The Rooprai Spinal Trust (RST) was formed. Their goal was to mirror Marrianne’s positive outlook, aid her quest for progress and help others affected by spinal cord injury. Along the way Marrianne has become an inspiration for people with similar injuries and many others as well!

Inspiration: It is not enough to have a good mind...

Are you using your mind to talk about insignificant gossip or are you using it to better yourself and the world around you?

Life is full of distractions especially with technology, those who can put those distractions behind and focus are the ones separate themselves from the pack.

6 health tips I learned from my dog

Happy Friday and Labor Day weekend!

6 health tips I have learned from my shih tzu:

1) Always stretch first thing in the morning and after laying down
2) Drink water right after you wake up
3) Always wag your tail (be happy) it will cheer up everyone around you
4) Ignore the loud barking dogs (negative people) and keep moving forward
5) Hide your 20% snacks around the house so others don't steal them
6) Be an MSU fan! Go State!

We hope everyone has a safe, fun and sun filled weekend!

Inspiration: A tiger doesn't lose sleep over the opinion of sheep

To be successful in life you have to separate yourself from the pack and ignore the negativity along the way.

When you begin to separate yourself the critics will start to give their negative opinions to try to stop you or slow you down. “You're wrong,” “that will never work,” “there's no way,” “why are you doing that?”

Unfortunately, when people start second guessing themselves that is what typically stops them from doing what they really want to do.

Block them out and stay focused on your goals!

Inspiration: comparison is the thief of joy

Don't compare yourself to others. Everyone has their own goals and dreams. If you are too busy watching everyone else try to accomplish their goals and dreams you will miss out on your own.

Also, set goals, small goals and BIG goals! Focus on yourself and not another person.

I frequently meet people who really want to make a change in their life but don't know what they want to change and have never set any goals! You MUST set goals so you know what direction you need to go in and what steps to take!
