We all relish finding that sweet spot in our learning – the perfect balance between feeling settled and challenged. And it goes without saying that, as we improve and age, this balance will likely alter. While some of us like to live life on the edge in pursuit of an ever-more comprehensive technique and repertoire, others prefer a calmer, less pressured environment in which to develop. At any level there’s always mileage in consolidating one’s playing in between more intense periods of learning. There may be stages in our lives when we feel extra adventurous – others when we cherish a slower pace and simply want to play music we know and love. For some, gearing up for some kind of event, such as an exam or concert, presents the best motivation to practise – but we’re all different, and enjoyment is surely as worthy an ambition as any.
