About this audiobook
To keep her safe, he will not only have to risk his life, but also his heart.
Lady Anna was once considered the catch of the season. Now, three years after she fell for a man who tried to murder her cousin, she eases her guilt with charity work at an orphanage. Until her mother insists she do her duty.
Attending her cousin’s ball is irritating enough. It’s her one dance with Daniel, the unscrupulous Earl of Effington, that rubs her nerves raw. And oddly leaves her senses on the edge of arousal.
The ton sees Daniel as a scoundrel. In truth, like centuries of before him, he leads a vast network of spies, protecting England from her worst enemies. His resolve never to marry means the one woman he’s always wanted—Lady Anna—is off limits. Especially now that his father’s murderer is coming after him as well.
At first, Anna wonders if Daniel was put on this earth just to annoy her. It’s only when she finds him injured that his mask begins to fall away—and so do the barriers between them. But their flaring passion puts her right where Daniel didn’t want her. Next on a killer’s list.
» WARNING: The following book contains: spies, musicales, men who think they know everything, women who know they do not, naughty liaisons, matchmaking mamas, and a seduction that will curl your toes.

USA Today Bestselling Author...
Childhood friends who’ve grown apart are forced together in this sexy, suspenseful historical romance. The heroine has withdrawn from Society, but her brother insists she return, and there she encounters her brother’s best friend — who’s not only a nobleman, but also a spy. There’s some intrigue along with the usual historical shenanigans of gowns, balls, and stolen kisses.
Melissa Schroeder
From an early age, USA Today Bestselling author Melissa loved to read. First, it was the books her mother read to her including her two favorites, Winnie the Pooh and the Beatrix Potter books. She cut her preteen teeth on Trixie Belden and read and reviewed To Kill a Mockingbird in middle school. It wasn’t until she was in college that she tried to write her first stories, which were full of angst and pain, and really not that fun to read or write. After trying several different genres, she found romance in a Linda Howard book. Since her first published book, Grace Under Pressure, Mel has had over 60 short stories, novellas, and novels published. She has written in genres ranging from historical to contemporary to futuristic and has worked with 8 publishers although she handles most of her publishing herself. She is best known for her Harmless and Santini series. After years of following her military husband around the country and world, Mel happily lives with her family in horse and wine country in Northern Virginia.

What our readers think
Readers find this title to have mixed reviews about the narrator. Some find the narrator's voice beautiful and enjoyable, while others find it irritating and unappealing. There are complaints about the narrator reading slowly, switching accents mid-sentence, and mispronouncing words. However, despite the negative feedback on the narration, readers still find the story interesting and enjoyable. Overall, the series is considered great, but it is recommended to read the book instead of listening to the narration."
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A final chapter, or an epilogue, where Anna and Daniel have a conversation about their relationship over the years, would have made this a 5 star read.
Narrator performance: 4.5 stars. - Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5The narrator sounds like an AI program. I’m sure it would be a good book, I just couldn’t get past the narrators voice, too monotone.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I don’t like the reading pace of this reader. It needs more soul.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I feel like she changed Daniel's backstory from the other books but still good even tho both mains are hopefully dense. The narrator was a bit robotic at times
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Love this author and the narrator . Ready to read sequels!
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Overly dramatic to an extreme! The narrator is terrible as well. My goodness! I like so many of these author's books but absolutely not this one.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Couldn't rate because I couldn't stand the narration, like most of the other reviews. I'm going to read it instead so I can rate the story itself.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5End of the series so far, I dont think it was as bad as other reviews make out, the narrator was ok! I was rooting for this couple but Daniel’s constant jealousy had a few red flags for me

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Narrator sucks. I looked her up and she is American and I knew it before I looked her up. There were all these words she just couldn’t pronounce properly “shot”, “ton” and on and on. It kind of ruined the listen for me. Then the story — ended too abruptly for a final installment to a series. Plus they drag the misunderstanding between H and H for too long. He is madly in love and she thinks he doesn’t love her. It goes on and on and on. There is actually a good mystery that they could have made more complex with more close calls. I also guessed the bad guy and I’m really really bad at doing that so that is not a good sign. Finally, the Hero’s super sexist comments never really get resolved and our heroine, who never wants to be owned by a man, really never gets much assurance that the hero understands his sexism. It was okay otherwise:)

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The 1st two books were good all around. This story is also good, but better to read it, as the narrator does a terrible job for Anna, as she sounds too robotic.

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5The reader of this book was wooden and unappealing unfortunately. I only finished listening because I wanted to finish the series.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This story was interesting, however the narrorator butchered it. I think I slept through 4 of the chapters because she was so boring and drawn out. Tried too much to have accents and articulate. She annunciated making each character their own voice, but oh so boring anyway. Fortunately the story caught my attention enough to finish the book. I almost didn't because of narroration.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I really liked the book and the series. The first two narrators were wonderful, the last one lacked the emotion of the characters and made it difficult to connect with the characters. Towards the end it got a little better but she is pretty monotone. Overall, it was a great series.
