      INTRODUCTION

      DRAWING NEAR

      Some people pray while they kneel. Others pray as they walk. Some people get up early to spend lengthy times in prayer, whereas others lie in bed and whisper a few words of prayer before drifting off to sleep.

      Though people pray in many different ways, there are few who feel their prayer lives need no improvement. Most of us want to experience genuine intimacy in our relationship with God, yet this often seems elusive or difficult to achieve. We either struggle with understanding what it means to draw near to God, or we wrestle with practicing it.

      It probably comes as no surprise that the Bible has much to say on the topic of prayer. Explore the following pages to discover the Bible’s instructions for prayer—and to see how the men and women of the Bible drew near to God.

      CHAPTER 1

      THE VALUE OF PRAYER

      One of the best practices I’ve employed in my prayer life is to take it slow. By nature, I simply want to get my prayers done, check the task off my list, and get on with parts of my day that feel more productive. A number of years ago, though, I found the value of taking my time in prayer. Now I often linger until I can fully clear my mind of distraction and truly connect with God. I can’t always afford to take that time every day, but I try to do so at least once or twice a week.

      REMAINING IN GOD’S PRESENCE

         Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.

         But you, dear friends, carefully build yourselves up in this most holy faith by praying in the Holy Spirit.
