Begin at 'Start'
The first step towards having your own micro-carrier isn’t finding enough funding or buying your first truck. The first step begins right after you think Wow, I’d really like to have my own motor carrier.
So what is the first step? An honest self-appraisal. You already know how many hours ‘just’ trucking consumes in your life. And you’ve got the guts to make a trucking company successful, or you wouldn’t be thinking so seriously about it. But there are other questions for you to answer:
Do you make good decisions in a timely manner?
Are you outgoing and assertive? Can you contact new shippers and sell them on the services your trucking company can provide?
Do you handle the word No
well? Do you take it personally?
Are you willing to check out details, like government regulations that cover your particular niche of the trucking industry? (tanker, wide load, hazmat, other niches)
Are you dependable? Do other people look to you to get a job done?
Have you taken some business courses or already know how to keep the books for your business so you can’t be swindled by a dishonest bookkeeper?
Do you have enough put aside in savings so your family can survive at least six months without your paycheck coming in?
Are you a self-starter? Can you set a course for yourself and stick to it until the goal’s reached?
Do you enjoy competing with others for business?
Do you map out the steps you need to take before starting a project?
