    George Orwell (whose real name was Eric Arthur Blair) was an English writer born in 1903 in Motihari (Bengal). Educated in England, he returned to India and joined the Imperial Police in Burma. He resigned in 1928 and decided to become a writer. He spent the following years wandering in Paris and London, where he mixed with the less fortunate (Down and Out in Paris and London, 1933). He then held various positions (librarian, teacher, and columnist) before joining the Spanish Civil War against the fascists (Homage to Catalonia, 1938).

    During the Second World War, he devoted himself to journalism and writing his most famous novels, Animal Farm (1945) and 1984 (1949). Orwell died of tuberculosis in London in 1950.
