About this ebook
Shadow finds himself on a Houston street with no memory of arriving there. In fact, remembers nothing about anything at all. In his pocket, he finds a single clue to his identity: an address that leads him to an alley behind a notorious tattoo shop owned by a local god.
When he begins to see things that no one else can—magical things—Shadow suspects that he’s not a normal amnesiac. Or even human.
Can he unravel the mystery in time to save his life and the life of his only friend?
Leslie Claire Walker
Leslie grew up among the lush bayous of southeast Texas and currently lives in the spectacularly green Pacific Northwest with ornery cats, two harps, and too many fantasy novels to count. She takes her inspiration from the dark beauty of the city, the power of myth, and music ranging from Celtic harp to heavy metal. Even in the darkest of her tales, a spark lights the way. Leslie Claire Walker is the author of the young adult contemporary fantasy series The Faery Chronicles, including the novels HUNT, DEMON, and FAERY. Her urban fantasy series, The Soul Forge, launched in in 2016 with NIGHT AWAKENS.

THE WINTER AIR CHILLED my bare arms to gooseflesh. I shivered, but not only from the cold and dark. At my back, a solid red brick wall offered no retreat. Beneath my feet, concrete sloped, damp from an icy downpour. Above, a canopy of oak branches whispered in the wind .
In front of me, a metal shed held something or someone monstrous. Something or someone powerful enough to bend the shape of the world around it and push a fine red mist through the metal, into the outside air.
I exhaled, my breath fogging air. I breathed in and tasted the mist—blood.
No reason why I should be able to see and feel and taste these things. Why I should understand that the force echoing through the alley had a name: magic.
How could I know that, when I didn’t know anything else?
How could I be in this unfamiliar place on a winter’s night in nothing but a T-shirt and khakis, too-big unlaced hikers on my feet? My clothes looked borrowed. Or stolen.
Fear froze my heart.
Movement to my left caught my eye. I turned to face the incoming threat as a light at the edge of the alley flickered on.
A girl stood in the puddle of light. Long, black hair that reminded me of crows’ feathers
