    PREFACE

THESE ARE THE POEMS OUR MOTHER WROTE OVER HER LIFETIME. THEY SPAN A PERIOD FROM 1940-1975.

SOME OF THE POEMS SHE WROTE FOR US TO RECITE AT CHRISTMASTIME AND EASTER ARE MISSING WE ARE STILL LOOKING FOR OTHERS.

PERHAPS, AS WE LOOK AT HER POEMS IN LIGHT OF TODAY, THEY TAKE ON A CERTAIN TIMELESS QUALITY.

THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE OF THE POEMS MOMMA WROTE ON THE QUESTION OF RACE. FOR HER DAY AND TIME MAMA WAS A COURAGEOUS MILITANT. SHE WAS A FIGHTER ALL OF THE YEARS OF OUR LIVES.

SHE EXPECTED US TO SUCCEED; BUT, SHE DIDN’T BROWBEAT US INTO ACHIEVEMENT. SHE LOVED US INTO EXCELLENCE.

MOMMA’S POEMS ARE OUR LEGACY. WE ARE SO GRATEFUL THAT SHE LEFT THEM FOR US AND OURS. WE HOPE YOU WILL FIND THEM TO BE USEFUL AND INSPIRING.

    LOVE,

    THE CHILDREN OF

    LOU ELLA BINGHAM-BRUTON

    MOTHER

    MOTHER’S PRAYERS

THIS IS A SONG THAT WAS WRITTEN BY MOMMA SHE SANG IT OFTEN FOR US WRITTEN SHORTLY AFTER THE DEATH OF HER MOTHER (GRANDMA TOWNSEND WHO DIED DEC 25, 1947)

I’d give this world and all that’s in it

If I could only have one minute

Just to see my mother’s loving face again

Since she left this earth and went away

To sleep till Jesus calls her someday

My heart has been filled with longing pain

I shall remember all her prayers

I know now my Jesus cares

For I’m going to meet my mother in the skies.

    Chorus

    Mother’s prayers have followed me

Yes, I can hear her pray now so patiently

As she called her Savior’s name with tear-filled eyes

I shall remember all her prayers,

I know now my Jesus cares

For I’m going to meet my mother in the skies.

    THE WEARER OF THE

    WHITE ROSE

    By Louella I. Bruton

There are roses being worn today

They are worn with loving care

But I would like to tell you

    About the rose I wear.

Now, some roses are worn for beauty
