Chapter 1
Marco
Sitting in Santiago’s office, my brothers and I debrief each other on everything that’s happened the last couple of weeks. Getting shot and being out of commission has put a dent in the plans we had in the works.
Has anyone been able to locate Leonardo?
Rodrigo asks after we get our usual business out of the way.
Dominic says he’s disappeared. We can’t confirm whether Matteo is hiding him,
Santiago says, looking between the both of us. I think we need to go about our business and wait for him to get comfortable. He’ll come out eventually.
Matteo knows we're coming for him?
I ask.
He does, but he also thinks we’ll be searching for him. If he sees we’re not, he might let his guard down a bit.
Let’s wait him out. I have all the time in the world. Rebeca, on the other hand, is not as patient,
Rodrigo says. Santiago laughs.
When we find him, I say we let Rebeca handle him. It certainly would be fun to watch. She’ll tear him limb from limb,
I say and Rodrigo chuckles. That girl can definitely handle his ass.
Call her in here,
Santiago orders.
We continue catching up on business when we hear a knock. The door opens and Rebeca saunters in. She winks at Rodrigo as she makes her way into the office.
Rebeca, thank you for joining us,
Santiago says. He motions for her to sit. We were just discussing how to handle Leonardo. It appears he’s gone into hiding.
Of course, he did. He’s a little pussy,
she says. I can’t help the chuckle that escapes my mouth.
We’re going to wait him out. Go about our business and wait for him to get comfortable. When he does, you’re going to be the one to handle him.
Rebeca’s face lights up.
When we know his whereabouts, we will meet and decide how to go from there. In the meantime, please be patient.
I will,
she says.
Santiago’s phone rings. He looks at his phone with a surprised expression. He answers and is silent, listening. What the fuck?
he booms. He hangs up and starts heading for the door. We need to get to the holding cells now.
In a rush, we head down to the basement holding cells. It’s where we bring prisoners to be tortured when needed. It’s barely used. It’s dirty and disgusting down there, but that’s the point. Rebeca is still with us. Santiago doesn’t seem to care that she’s here, so I don’t either.
When we get there, Alvaro meets us. It catches me by surprise because Alvaro is one of our enforcers, but he strictly stays at the warehouses. That’s his post. He doesn’t leave there. Why the fuck is he here?
Where is she?
Santiago asks.
Alvaro points to the end of the long, cold hall. The five of us head that way. When we get to the last cell, a woman is sitting on the ground. She has her knees bent, and she’s hugging them to her chest. Her jeans are ripped at one knee, her hair is matted to one side of her head with blood. Why is she here?
Alvaro explains, She came to the warehouses. She started to make a scene, demanding we take her to her brother. When we asked who she was talking about, she started throwing punches. I grabbed her, and she fought back, which explains her appearance. Eventually, I was able to get her into the car and brought her here.
Open the door,
Santiago orders.
Alvaro does what’s instructed.
Rodrigo grabs Rebeca’s arm, keeping her back so Santiago and I can go in. Alvaro stands guard at the door.
Who are you?
Santiago asks the woman.
Where’s my brother?
she counters.
I won’t know who you’re talking about without knowing who you are first,
Santiago responds calmly.
You know damn well who my brother is,
she spits. She rises to her feet. She steps up to Santiago, but he doesn’t react. Where’s my brother?
Who are you?
I ask. She looks at me before looking back at Santiago. I’m Lorena Cabral.
Oh, shit.
Well, Miss Cabral, I have no idea where your brother is. The last time I saw him, he was shooting at my brothers,
Santiago says as he walks toward Alvaro. Alvaro moves out of the way and Santiago steps out of the cell. You made the wrong move by accusing us of knowing where he is.
Lorena is staring at me. My gaze hasn’t left hers since I stepped into the cell. I watch her. The silence between us stretches. It’s like we are in some sort of trance.
Where the fuck is my brother? If I find out you killed him, you will pay,
she yells.
I don’t move while she continues to scream in my face. We don’t know where he is,
I say calmly, as if I’m trying to soothe her. She takes a step closer to me and spits in my face. I stare down at her, but I don’t make a move. My eyes are locked on hers as my hand slowly comes up, wiping the spit off the side of my nose. I suggest you calm yourself so we can have a civilized conversation.
Bring me my brother,
she says.
We don’t have your brother,
I respond.
Why should I believe you?
Anger radiates off this woman in waves.
I can guarantee you that we would not be holding your brother. When we get our hands on him, he’s dead.
I turn and head out of the cell.
Alvaro locks the door when I step out.
Let me out of here!
she screams as
