    INTRODUCTION

Just as there are two sides to every coin, there are two ways in which life can be lived. For most people, life is lived on the same side of the coin. They don’t realize there is another choice; so few find the way to live life from that side. The multibillion-dollar self-help industry is proof that people are searching for the way. Enlightenment, self-realization, the law of attraction, peace, inner contentment, and the source of true happiness are just some of the avenues they pursue in trying to get there. If it were as simple as being told how to do it, most would be there by now.

I have chosen to write this book to cut through the rhetoric, the empty promises, and the paths that can get you sidetracked or stuck, to strip away anything that the truth is not and to point to exactly what it is. I spent many years of my life chasing after it, looking for an answer—the how. It is my hope that I can save you those years of doing the same because it really is so simple. The irony is that because it is so simple, we don’t get it; we think it has to be harder than that.

If you are considering reading this book, something in you likely wants a change—a change in your reality and how you experience life. If that feeling or urge is in you, then true change is possible. If it is only a passing thought, or you’ve said, It would be nice or Well, all my friends are on this journey, so I thought I might as well try it too, the change may not come, as you are not ready yet. And that is fine; the journey of self-realization is not for everyone at this time. But it is available to everyone who has the inner desire to know. Only you can decide for yourself.

It basically comes down to whether you have suffered enough yet. Do you truly desire to make a permanent change that will give you what you want to experience in life? If you can answer yes to this question, then the way is open to you. The way is the journey inward, a journey of self-discovery. It will take determination on your part; it won’t come easily. It requires a decision that comes from your heart, not your head. Once you make it, don’t give in.

The old expression It’s always darkest before the dawn is very true in this journey. You may feel that it is just too hard at times, but that’s exactly when you’ll make the most progress. It’s only a feeling, an energy in you, that gives the power to your thoughts. Neither really exists. The thought and the feeling that this is too hard is only a story you are telling yourself.

Join me on this journey into yourself, where we will explore all the parts of what makes you you. Let’s find the other side of the coin of life so you can live life from there, if that is your choice.

    CHAPTER 1

Each of us has a mind, but not all are created equal. Every mind is unique to its owner. What makes them different is what is fed into them—namely, thoughts, those words or images that run on autopilot between our ears. Thoughts can be our best friends or our worst enemies. They seem to come from nowhere, hang around for a while, and then disappear, only to be replaced by another. From the time you open your eyes in the morning until you go to sleep at night, there are thoughts, thoughts, and more thoughts—that ever-present noise in our heads.

Some are very useful, but others are just an endless stream of thinking, with thoughts coming and going. For most people, there is no break in between thoughts; it’s just a constant noise in their heads. Unfortunately, we get so used to the noise that we don’t pay attention to what is really happening in our minds. The Buddhist monks coined a term for it; they call it the monkey mind, when there is endless chatter and noise, with little or no value to the person.

What if there was an off switch for the monkey mind or even for the mind itself? Would you be interested in finding it? Do you think it is even possible? What if it were possible? How willing would you be to go through what it takes to experience a quiet mind?

Now, here is where the mind kicks in and hits you with all the reasons why you can’t. That is impossible! How are you going to function with a quiet mind? You can’t do that; you need me. You won’t know how to live without my telling you how to live. You are crazy to think you can live without thinking. This is what a mind is supposed to do. It’s my job!

Sound familiar, those voices in your head? Usually there are two of them to start. One is the good guy voice that tries to keep you honest and following all the rules. The second is the voice of desire, the voice that always tries to get you to try new things—things that break the rules. They seem to argue inside your head, and sometimes it is quite the battle. Have you experienced this in your own life?

Does the constant noise drive you around the bend some days, as it goes on all day long, hour after hour? You can’t stop thinking; you want to, but like a never-ending drip of water on a tin plate, it is there. Drip, drip, drip, and there’s no way to shut it off. Thoughts keep popping into your head, most of which only relive what has already happened. You keep going over the day in your mind. Your thoughts cover what you’d have preferred had happened that day or your worry about what might happen in the future. It is what a lot of people complain about, and if it is true for you, all that mental activity can become very tiresome or even exhausting. I bet there are times you wish you could just shut it off and have complete quiet. But that never happens, right?

This brings us to another fun time when the old mind likes to wreak havoc on you, and that is when you’re sleeping. Have you ever had a long day that ended with your being very tired? You can’t keep your eyes open and are sitting there on the couch, doing the head bob as you try to watch TV. So you say to yourself, It’s time for me to drag my butt off to bed. I am really looking forward to a good night’s sleep. Your head hits the pillow, and—bam!—it starts. Thoughts stream into your head: I should have; I could have; why me?; if only; why did they say that?; he hates me; I can’t; I am not good enough—just to name a few.

You were dead tired, but now you’re wide-awake. You cannot shut off the thinking, and the more you try, the worse it gets. Has that ever happened to you? Or maybe you’ve been sleeping for a couple of hours when you wake up with your mind in overdrive. You toss and you turn, but no matter what you do, you can’t get back to sleep. I bet you would love to find the off switch now. (There is one; you just forgot where you put it.)

A second aspect to this mind stream of thoughts is your emotions. They are triggered by the thoughts that run through your mind.

Some of our thoughts are magnified many times over by the emotions that we feel in conjunction with a particular thought. Let’s explore this a little, and as we do, let’s look at what goes on in your body and see whether you can relate.

As a rule, we tend to put labels on emotions. The big ones are labeled anger, hate, jealousy, resentment, love, and fear. Almost all other emotions can be put into one of these categories. Some emotions can be a combination of any or all of these. It all depends on how you are wired. The way you have been conditioned mentally over your lifetime will be the determining factor.

From birth to now, we all carry our own stories, which we each affectionately call my life. Where we were born, our parents, our siblings, social status, the schooling we received, religious training, the friendships we developed (some new, some old), our relationships, our working environment—all these contribute to our conditioning.

When you take your thoughts, your emotions, and your experiences and add them all together, you get a personality. You say, This is me; this is who I am. My name is ______, and this is my story. (This is where you fill in your own name and your own story. As this is a journey inward, you will get the most out of this book by making yourself the main focus.)
