Twenty-six years ago, I had an idea that I could write an enduring children’s story in honor of my son, who was about to be born. Well, after a late-night outing of wine and pizza, the forthcoming text you are about to read, was spawned out of my nightmare! One of the habits, I had developed over the years was to take notes from my nightstand notepad and to write it down, if deemed worthy. These notes carried me into an outline then to a synopsis and finally a draft, that pretty much sat idle for decades, until now.
In 2021, I underwent hand-wrist surgery. To my chagrin, this added an unexpected long recovery. I decided that drawing would be one of my therapies. My thought was to rekindle a passion and hopefully a new career, that I missed out on so long ago. The culmination of those thoughts, ideas, and a nightmare, has brought forth this trilogy series. To me, it has unfolded to become a world of adventure, danger, drama and maybe a little romance along the way. ;) It is a world I would like to offer and share with you, my curious reader, that makes the artist in all of us, wake up and dream!
Introduction
In 1866, America began to recover from a bloody Civil War and the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. As a campaign policy to increase his popularity, President Andrew Johnson attempts to purchase the vast territory of Alaska from the Russian Emperor, despite his troubles with Congress.
An expedition is assembled to survey and explore this region with help from the Interior Department. President Johnson commissions an unsuspecting pawn, Field Director, Jack Calsin to head the expedition. Jack must travel the Oregon Trail and set sail aboard the naval frigate USS Hercules escorted by the Governor Clinton. The events that follow become a life and death struggle to complete our hero’s mission, if he can..

I do not remember what time I woke up, but it was early. I went outside my flat in the dark to get some firewood. The bitter cold of 1866 lingered on the cherry blossoms of April. The logs were frozen over slightly from the additional spring snowfall.
Ah the snow!
I sighed, how I hate the snow!
Nevertheless, living in Washington D.C., I had to expect it.
My twin sisters died in the winter of 1830 when I was three years old. Ever since, I have hated the snow and the cold. I thought I would find some comfort in this year’s Almanac that boasted the prospects of a mild season. Still, they have been wrong before. It said the same thing in 1830.
It took awhile to get the fire started, but before long, I had created a blaze. I began to gather my thoughts for a 9:00 am meeting. I normally do not wake up so early for morning engagements, but today was a special one. Today I was meeting with the President of the United States, Andrew Johnson, and Secretary of State, William Seward.
I was invited several weeks ago to meet with the President by my chairman, acting Secretary of the Interior, Mr. James Harlan. At the time of this invitation, I was enroute from the snowbound Great Lakes Region and the Ohio Valley surveying mineral resources, which prevented me from attending. I was told the President never invites someone twice.
My mind wondered as to what might be so impending that a meeting with the President would involve me. Our country had just suffered through a bloody Civil War, the assassination of President Lincoln, and the debate over the rights of free slaves. All these things were on the lips of every American. It was a time that seemed to be plagued by one problem after another.
The clock chimed above the mantle, snapping me out of my thoughts. I ate, shaved, dressed in my best gray suit, and summoned for a carriage. By the time the carriage arrived, I had a moment to gather my leather
