Introduction
Evidence of settlement and occupation of Ireland can be shown to exist since 6000 BC. That evidence shows the first settlers were Mesolithic hunters. About 795 AD the Norsemen began invading Irish villages and towns during these invasions they seized and fortified the ports of Dublin and Annagassan in 838AD. Aed Finnliath the King of Ireland expelled the Norsemen between 862-879AD.
The Irish surname of Liddy is one of family origin
, rather than being derived from a location or occupation. Surnames with a family name origin were derived from the given name of an ancestor. This type of name was, in most cases, inherited and held collectively by members of a family group. Initially surnames identified a person by connection to a family member. In this case the name is an Anglicization of the Gaelic O'Lideadha, which means a descendant of Lideadha
. The Irish prefix O
indicates a grandfather, or earlier ancestor, while the given name Lideadha is of uncertain origin.
The earliest recorded references of the surname Liddy, or a variant, appear to be found in Irish documents from at least the 14th century when records show that O'Lideadha belongs historically to County Clare and was a Dalcassian Sept much to the order of the groups fighting the thousands of wars which occurred at that time. Also around this time, Gillerrist and Lamaghlyn O'Liddy were at Limerick in 1314, with other mere
Irishmen, discharged of all felonies
etc, on paying a fine. More recently, in the 17th century the name was mentioned in Petty's census
as one of the principal names in the barony of Corcomuoe, County Clair. The Annuals of Loch Ce spell the name of O'Laidigh, these reference two so called bishops of Killalar and an archdeacon of Annaghdown, of which parish they were erenaghs.
