    Oakleaf Academy - Melody Lockhart

    Chapter 1

    Good Morning?

Oh no! yawned Jessamy, rubbing her eyes. I’m late for breakfast! And I bet there are only gooseberries left. Ugh!

Dazzle the glowworm was sitting on her bed staring at her. He must have been cheeping for a while, trying to wake her up, Jessamy thought. The little creature usually perched on a bedside table, where he was a friendly bedside light and alarm clock for Jessamy and her roommates, Poppy, Ivy, and Azalea.

Jessamy fluttered down from her bunk, her curly red hair trailing behind her. She glanced at the empty beds of her roommates as she reached for her uniform and quickly pulled it on.

Oh, Dazzle, I can’t believe I’m late on the very first day back! she chattered. I was just so excited to start the new semester that I couldn’t get to sleep last night. Then once I dozed off, I was too tired to wake up again! Maybe if I hurry, there will be a few blueberries left for breakfast. I mean, who actually likes gooseberries anyway?

Then she tucked her wand into her belt and hurried out of the room, banging the door shut behind her.

Don’t worry, I saved you a blueberry, said Poppy, passing one to Jessamy as she sat down beside her in the cafeteria. Across the table, Azalea and Ivy were already finishing their own breakfasts.

Oh, there you are Jessamy! said Azalea. I thought it was quiet today. Why are you so late, anyway? But before Jessamy could reply, a hush fell over the room. She turned to see Oakleaf’s principal Ms. Peaseblossom, an older fairy with pink hair, waiting to speak.

Good morning, my splendid students! Welcome to another super semester here at Oakleaf! Ms. Peaseblossom began. I’m tickled pink to tell you that you’ll all be taking part in the Magic Fair this semester. It’s a charming chance for you to shine in front of family and friends. A murmur of excitement filled the cafeteria before Ms. Peaseblossom continued. I want each of you to come up with your own magical project to present at the fabulous fair. You can work alone or in pairs, but the most important thing is to invent something interesting—so do enjoy your experiments!

Excited chatter filled the cafeteria as students began swapping ideas, but Jessamy, who rarely stopped talking, couldn’t join in. Her mouth was still completely full of blueberry.

Ivy was full of musical plans for her presentation. She could play the guitar and had a great singing voice. Her Ariel magic meant that she could hear music from stardust and moondust, too.

Poppy was less enthusiastic. What can I do? she sighed. I still don’t really know what kind of magic I have. She glanced down at the Heart spark at the end of her wand. Even Ms. Peaseblossom had been surprised when it had first appeared. She’d told Poppy it was very rare. The problem was, they didn’t really teach that kind of magic at Oakleaf.

Don’t worry, said Azalea. I’m not too excited about showing off my Fishscale magic to my family either. Everyone knew that Azalea had always wanted to have sparkly Ariel magic instead of watery Fishscale. Her family were snobby about magic and thought that Ariel was the only proper type.

Why don’t we team up? suggested Poppy. Together, we might be able to come up with something exciting. Azalea agreed happily.

At the next table, the gnome twins Oakley and Olive, who both had earthy Groundling magic, seemed to be in much less agreement.

No, Oakley, your idea’s boring! Olive was saying. I want to make jewels that explode as loud as fireworks!
