I've always loved a good mystery. Even as a young girl, my mother and I would scour the shelves of dusty used bookstores for old gothic romances. The kind of romance that the male protagonist was a brooding reluctant owner of an old mansion; in a far-off land perched on the side of a cliff overlooking the churning sea. The female protagonist was typically young and naïve and somehow a threat to those who lurked in the shadows endeavoring to keep their secrets safe. Telling stories has been a lifelong passion, and after many of life's twists and turns, I am back to writing romances and mysteries. I enjoy spending time with my husband and three kids, traveling, cooking, home decorating, and seeking out new adventures in my free time.

The dream
Imagine waking up to the gentle spray of salty breezes, the rhythmic lapping of water against the hull, and the rays of dawn softly streaming through your porthole.
You are not in a conventional home; you have entered a world where your residence is also your means of exploring. A motor yacht is not simply a vessel—it's a haven, an escape, and a means to endless adventures. Here, the rewards are as limitless as the sea itself.
To many, the allure of living on a yacht may be derived from the romanticism of nautical novels and epic maritime tales, especially with swashbucklers and pirates. And sure, there's definitely a touch of that romance—the allure of casting off lines and setting off to distant horizons. But the rewards run far deeper than the surface of all that; it’s the chance to live life on your terms.
There is a built-in excitement of waking up in a new location every morning, your windows framing a changing scenery of quaint ports, peaceful anchorages, and idyllic coves. The world is your backyard, and you are the daring explorer charting your course through the world's beauty and wonder. Each day holds the potential for a new adventure full of discovery, whether you find a secluded beach, a bustling fishing village, or a hidden gem such as a restaurant that only the locals know exists.
Beyond the lure of changing scenery, living aboard a motor yacht creates a unique sense of community—a camaraderie or bond among fellow adventurers who share your passion for boating life. Marinas become meeting grounds, where stories are exchanged over sunset cocktails, and laughter mingles with the lapping of waves against the docks and water birds calling overhead. Lifelong friendships are cultivated on these docks as individuals from diverse backgrounds connect to pursue a shared dream.
Adventures aside, perhaps the most understated reward lies in the daily rhythm of life on board. The movement of the tides mimics the rhythm of existence itself. It's a life pared down to its essentials—simple, intentional, and unique experiences. The confined space a yacht provides encourages a minimalist mindset, prompting you to embrace what truly matters and release the physical baggage that clutters modern existence.
This book will dig deeper into the many rewards and benefits accompanying the choice to live aboard a motor yacht, from the practical considerations of downsizing and adapting to life on the water to the unique connection with nature, self, and others.
First Steps
Becoming a liveaboard on a boat can be a dream come true for those with a sense of adventure and the desire to live an unconventional lifestyle. It offers the opportunity to explore, enjoy the freedom of the open sea, and create unique memories. But it can also provide an alternative place to live and, for some, might even be more affordable than living on land.
Moving from a spacious house in the mountains to a medium-sized motor yacht has had its challenges, but the trade-off is the feeling of freedom, and the sense of adventure living on a boat brings. We didn’t start the process of wanting to live on a dock, but that is where we ended up due to the twists and turns that life offers when you least expect it. We are so thankful that we chose our 1990 Jefferson 48’ Rivanna to be our home and even more grateful that we have a great marina to live in until we set our course for the grand adventure.
Often, when we share with people that we live on a yacht, the response is that they, too, would like to live on a boat. Let’s be honest: the fantasy of motoring off into the sunset has its appeal; it's romantic, and the idea of freedom on the seas is enticing. We have found that life aboard a boat has many pitfalls, but at the same time, the rewards seem to exceed the drawbacks.
When we initially set out on this adventure, we had many misconceptions about the boat-buying process, the amount of money required, the type of boat we were buying, and the reality of our expectations. This book will discuss those misconceptions and give insight into tackling those challenges head-on. Perhaps even make the process easier for you.
So, if you're ready to climb aboard on this exciting journey, let’s dive in here and explore some essential first steps to help you buy a boat and become a liveaboard. Consider these items just dipping your toes in the water and something to start thinking about as you delve further into this guide.
Define Your Goals and Lifestyle:
Before jumping into the liveaboard lifestyle, define your goals and desired lifestyle. Consider your preferred cruising destinations, the time you wish to spend on the water, and your expectations for comfort and amenities. Also, who will be joining you? Are you going solo, with your partner, or with a buddy? Or are you a family of five like us?
Understanding your goals will guide you in choosing the right boat and planning for your new life on board. Your goals are likely to change the further you get into this process. Be prepared to pivot and be flexible; being flexible is precisely what we had to do, and we are so grateful that we were in the position to bend and flex. Had we not been open to that, we may not have been able to realize our goal of living on a yacht. After all, we didn’t move almost three thousand miles across the county to live in a cramped apartment on land. We went through all that for the adventure, even if our adventure looks a little different than what we originally set as our course.
Research and Educate Yourself:
Gaining knowledge about boating and the liveaboard lifestyle is crucial. Research various yacht types, sizes, and features to determine what suits your needs best. Familiarize yourself with navigation, safety procedures, and required maintenance duties. Utilize resources such as books, online forums, and boating courses to increase your knowledge of yacht ownership and living aboard a vessel. Don’t forget to join groups on Facebook that align with your goals. You can learn so much from others who are already living your dream. We joined Facebook groups to get immersed in everything boating, including liveaboard groups. We’ve met some great people and acquired some good information along the way.
Establish a Realistic Budget:
Creating a realistic budget is also one of the most important
