The icy touch of the water on Samara’s face chased away the last of her exhaustion. It had been well past noon when she’d finally dragged herself out of bed. Being woken in the middle of the night by the nightmare that ended with her remembering something about the attack had made it hard to get back to sleep.
Not only had she recalled who the silver-haired witch was who’d attacked Aamina, but she’d been knocked in the head by Beck Norwood.
He’d stopped her from rushing in to help Aamina. He was the reason the air witch heir had been taken. The question was, why? Just like why he had been seen talking to the silver-haired witch before the attack occurred? Why had he wanted to talk to her about Rhona? Had that just been an attempt to regain her trust? Make her think he was the good guy?
This is for your own good.
That was what Beck had said after he’d dazed her. Why would he want Aamina to be kidnapped? None of it made sense, but she knew what she’d heard. She’d spent an hour arguing with Nico in the middle of the night about charging to Beck’s room and demanding answers. As pissed as Nico was, he’d reminded her why that would be a bad idea. Unfortunately, they had no way to prove Beck knew the silver-haired witch. And no one else had been witness to the attack on Aamina. If she claimed Beck struck her on the head, he could easily deny it.
And with the way her parents had been acting, they’d believe him over her.
If they were going to get answers, they had to be smart going about it. Samara had hated to admit Nico was right. Eventually, she’d fallen back asleep with Nico holding her in his arms.
She’d been woken up earlier this morning after a knock had sounded at the door. Nico had gotten up to see who it was. When he’d come back into the room, he’d told her to go back to sleep, and that he’d be by again when she was awake. Whatever the other Thorn had come to tell him, he’d kept to himself. Samara had been too tired to push. If she needed to know, he would’ve told her.
With a towel, she patted her face dry and sighed. Just when she was hoping things would stop being so complicated, they became even worse. She pulled on a pair of comfy yoga pants, a t-shirt, and a sweatshirt. Luckily, there weren’t any classes today, thanks to the recent attack and kidnapping of Aamina.
By the time she exited the bathroom, she found Nico standing inside her bedroom, stationed at the door like a sentry. When his eyes landed on her, they lit up, but his scowl didn’t change. Something was wrong, or rather more wrong than yesterday.
Morning, princess.
I think you mean afternoon,
she murmured, going to him. He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her in close. You feel tense.
It happens when I’m worried about someone I care about.
She leaned back and stared up into his face. Why do I get the feeling you’re not about to tell me we can spend the whole day being lazy in my room and pretending the rest of the world doesn’t exist?
He tucked her hair behind her ear and traced the curve of her cheek. Letting out a heavy sigh, he said, Your parents arrived here earlier this morning and—
What? Why didn’t you tell me?
Because they didn’t come alone. Aamina’s parents are here, as well as Dorian’s. There are about ten others with them. They’ve been speaking to the headmistress and Commander Talon all morning. I asked if I should bring you, but your parents requested that you continue to rest. They promised to come and find you later.
He hesitated, then added quietly, Beck’s parents are here as well.
Was he asked to be there?
Nico’s muscles tensed. No, at least not while I was there.
His magical aura reached out and hugged her as securely as his arms did.
Have you seen him?
Oh, I have,
he muttered darkly. He was standing outside your room quietly arguing with Braxis, the Thorn I left here to watch over you. Coward stormed off the moment he spotted me coming.
You know, I’m sure I could accidentally trip him down a set of stairs.
Nico scoffed. I’m sure you could, princess. Just like I’m sure I could accidentally throw him through a fucking window.
As much as I’d enjoy seeing that, don’t do something to get yourself in trouble.
I’m not worried about Norwood.
Samara wanted to say she wasn’t either, but she couldn’t get the words out. Beck had ties to the silver-haired witch, the same witch who’d attacked and kidnapped Aamina. Did that same witch also go after Rhona? And why would Beck be involved at all with their disappearances? Why was he so hellbent on gaining the fire witch seats on the council? His family was already powerful without them. Then there was how Philip’s ghost had appeared behind Beck, looking like he wanted to murder the witch. Once upon a time, the two had been friends. Now, Samara was questioning everything she thought she knew about Beck.
Thinking about it all merely gave her a headache.
Nico pressed his lips to her forehead. If I could take you to the lake right now to let off some steam, I would. But with part of the council being here, there are far too many eyes around.
I’ll live,
she promised.
You better.
He kissed her left cheek, followed by her right. We’re not even close to being over.
He kissed her lips, and Samara’s whole body warmed. He slid one hand up her back and buried it in her hair. She leaned into him, considering asking him to put up a shield so she could remove that damn bracelet and let her magic mingle with his. His hands slipped lower, probably to lift her off her feet.
But a gentle rap at the door interrupted their moment.
Nico immediately placed himself between Samara and the door. A shield of blue light formed around his right arm, now crossed over his chest, while his left fell to the dagger at his hip.
Nico,
Braxis’ voice called through the door. He was one of the extra Thorns Nico had placed on her from the beginning. He was also one of the ones she’d pulled from the lake the day she’d been attacked. Samara’s aunt is here and wishes to speak with her if she’s up for it.
Nico lowered the shield and glanced over his shoulder. It’s up to you.
Samara almost said no. She wanted to go back to the kiss she’d been sharing with Nico. But if her aunt had taken the time to come and speak with her, she should see what she had to say. It’s fine. Let her in.
Nico opened the door and stepped to the side.
Samara,
Aunt Melody exclaimed and rushed into the room. Goddess, I’ve been so worried about you.
She yanked Samara into a bone-crushing hug. Are you alright?
I will be unless you suffocate me,
Samara teased, hugging her aunt back.
Melody let her go and ran her hands down her arms. I’m sorry. I just heard what happened, and I couldn’t believe it. After Philip, I feared the worst.
Her frantic gaze danced over Samara’s face. My sweet girl. You’ve been through so much. I’m so sorry.
The worried frown slowly morphed into a strange, dazed expression.
Samara tilted her head, studying her aunt. Her stomach churned uncomfortably. The charm on her wrist that her aunt had made felt heavier. Aunt Melody?
She didn’t respond. It was almost like she couldn’t even hear Samara speaking. While she stared at her aunt, confused at what was happening, Nico eased his way around to stand beside her. Samara pulled away, back into the safety of his presence. She found herself leaning against him without realizing it and waited an extra three seconds before pulling away. His solid, strong body made her feel safer than the shields he constantly placed around her.
What’s wrong?
Nico whispered.
Samara shook her head. Aunt Melody?
she said louder.
Melody jerked and looked around. Hmm? Oh, I’m sorry, dear. I haven’t been getting much sleep of late,
she mumbled. But we’re not here to talk about me. You would not believe how worried I was about you. How do you feel?
Samara hesitated. Her aunt’s voice sounded strained when she asked that final question, and she couldn’t decipher why. Everything about her aunt felt off. Her cheeriness was gone, which wasn’t out of the ordinary considering her situation, but she wasn’t even pretending to be happy anymore. Even in the darkest of times, Aunt Melody was always the one to fake a smile or force a skip into her step. Now, her darkened eyes were unconcealed. Her voice was monotone, and the longer she spoke, the more drawn out her words were and the more her mouth became a fine line.
I feel fine. It could’ve been far worse.
Yes, you could’ve been taken with Aamina. Goddess, I still can’t believe that happened.
She glanced at Samara’s wrist, where the charm resided. You’re continuing to wear this, yes? You’re not taking it off for any reason?
I’m following the rules,
Samara lied better than she ever had in her life.
Melody’s eyes narrowed, then she sighed and gently patted Samara’s cheek. I know you are. I’m sorry it probably feels like there are so many, but it’s just to keep you safe.
Samara bit back her harsh laugh at her aunt’s words. Do you have any idea what Mom and Dad are going to do? Or the council?
Melody started to shake her head, then stopped abruptly. She sucked in a harsh breath and flinched.
Are you okay?
Samara asked, growing more worried by the second. What was wrong with her aunt?
Fine, my girl,
she whispered. Just fine.
With a flash of speed, she grabbed Samara’s wrists, squeezing them under her fingers like she was about to fall. She strained to speak like she had something caught in her throat. As quickly as she’d grabbed for Samara, she let
