Introduction
This is The Yoga Manifesto. It answers two questions: Why Yoga? Why now?
I will summarize the very long and remarkable history of Yoga from its Indian origins to its global present, its entanglement with money, where it fits in the constellation of religions, its dialectic with science, its place in today’s society, and the bright future of Yoga. I believe that increasing the Yoga community’s self-awareness, clarity of thought, and purity of motive will benefit the entire world.
This manifesto draws on current and classic scholarship, and my long, thoughtful life. I started Yoga at the age of 12—and I’m now well past 62!—so more than half a century. I also tapped the expertise of Dr. Madhav M. Deshpande (linguist), Dr. James D. Neill (astrophysicist), and Dr. Thomas R. Trautmann (historian). The improvements are theirs; the remaining shortcomings are mine.
