    To my readers

    ONE

    Marco

You got the shade tent? Carter asked as we stood in my driveway. We were double checking that we had everything we needed before we hit the road to head to the coast for a couple nights at a cabin near the beach.

Hmm, I said and glanced at the trunk. I don’t see it, do you?

No, it’s probably still in your garage.

    Let me check.

Carter continued adjusting everything in the trunk while I went to the garage to see if my sun tent was in there. Neither of us had bothered to pack before this morning, so we were scrambling a bit to make sure that we had everything. At least we’d decided on a cabin this time instead of using tents. It was only mid-May, so the temperature could still get cold at night, and I didn’t want to freeze my ass off like last time we’d decided to take a trip to the beach in the spring.

Yeah! It’s in here! I hollered when I saw the sun tent propped up against the wall. I grabbed it and hiked it up to my shoulder. Carter took it from me and stuck it in the trunk. He’d arranged everything perfectly, like he always did. Back when we were in the Marines together, he was by far the most organized of our unit. We each only did one tour in the military, entering and exiting around the same time. We’d grown close over the years and had settled in Atlanta after returning to civilian life since we were both from the area. A lot of people had come and gone from my life, but I could always count on Carter being there for me. I often dreamed of him being the best man at my wedding once I found the right girl to marry. If I ever found the right girl, but my dating difficulties were another story for a different day.

Do we have everything? I asked as Carter obsessively adjusted the contents of the trunk.

It looks like it, but what are we trying to do while we’re there? Should we grab the paddleboards too?

We can if you want, but I thought we were just going to chill. Watch some hockey and basketball, drink some beers, maybe light a fire. I wasn’t trying to do too much.

What’s the point of going to the beach then? We could do that stuff back here in Atlanta, and then I wouldn’t have to spend any money on a rental.

Don’t you want to hang out in nature for a few days?

"Yeah, if we’re actually going to do something in the nature!"

"Dude, chill. We can take the paddleboards out on the water if you want. Don’t
