Glimpses of West Bengal and Sample Itinerary - Ansusekhar Guin

    Chapter 1: West Bengal: Introduction

Bengal or Banga-Desh is mentioned in ancient books, like, Aitareya Aranyak, Boudhayan Sutra, Patanjal, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Bhagavat, Puranas, Raghubangsha of Kalidasa, and Brihat Samhita of Baraha Mihir. According to a legend, Queen Sudeshna, Wife of Baliraja, gave birth of five powerful sons, Anga, Banga, Kalinga, Sumbha and Pundra and five kingdoms were created by them. One of them is Banga. According to another legend, the Dravid tribe, Beng, were driven by the Aryan in 1000 BC and settled here and the area came to be known as Bangla. The Bengal rulers established vast kingdoms in the 8th to 12th centuries during the Pal and Sen dynasties. It came under the rule of the Delhi Sultanate at the end of the 12th century, but after the death of Aurangzeb, Bengal became an independent Muslim kingdom.

West Bengal is a state in the eastern region of India along the Bay of Bengal. With over 91 million inhabitants, it is the fourth-most populous state and the fourteenth-largest state by area in India. It borders Bangladesh in the east, and Nepal and Bhutan in the north. It also borders the Indian states of Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Sikkim, and Assam. The state capital is Kolkata, the third-largest metropolis, and seventh-largest city by population in India. West Bengal includes the Darjeeling Himalayan hill region, the Ganges delta, the Rarh region and the coastal Sundarbans. The state’s main ethnic group are the Bengalis.

Bengal was from the beginning an agriculture and fishery-based economy and the main produce were rice and fish. Bengal is also famous for its textile industry. Bengal is also famous for its Tea industry. According to Bengali folklore, Chand Saudagar of Bengal was carrying out business with the world with his Sapta Dinga, the fleet of seven ships. Similarly, the Merchants of Greece, China and Iran were coming to Bengal for business. Tamralipta was the prosperous port city of that time.

Bengal Renaissance is the social, cultural, psychological, and intellectual changes in Bengal during the nineteenth century and It produced great thinkers, like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, and above all Rabindra Nath Thakur. At that time, Bengal was one of the main centres for the struggle for Independence of India. British started dividing Bengal into two parts, but Bengal protested vehemently. Division of Bengal was stopped, but the embarrassed British shifted the Capital from Calcutta to Delhi in 1912.
