It's 10 p.m.

It's 10 p.m. Do you know where your children are?

It's one of the most famous phrases in New York City news.

Since the very first 10 O'Clock News aired on WNYW in the late 1960s, it's always been proceeded by an unmistakable public service message asking: "It's 10 p.m. Do you know where your children are?"

We tracked down the promo writer responsible for this piece of news history, Mel Epstein. He told FOX 5 NY's Steve Lacy it all began with a visit from the station's general manager, who wanted something "warm and fuzzy" to take the temperature down during the social unrest of the 1960s.

"It really came off the top of my head," Epstein said.
