تأتي ترجمة سليمان العطار في المركز الثاني و التي يجب الإشادة بها فهي ترجمة عنوانها الشغف مضي الكاتب أربع سنوات يترجم فيها الرواية لكي يحقق حلم معلمه عبد العزيز الأهواني في ترجمة الرواية كاملة و بحرفية لأول مرة لأن كل سابقتها من الترجمات لم يرقوا لهذا المستوي و مستوي ترجمة الأشعار أقل بدرجة او درجتين من عبد العزيز الأهواني و لكن ممتاز جدًا مع ذلك
و سليمان مترجم يهتم بالجودة لقد بذل من الوقت و المجهود أقصاه في ترجمة كل عمل في حياته و لذلك فترجمات سليمان العطار قليلة جدًا مقارنة بمترجمين ستجد انهم ترجموا 15 عمل في 3 سنوات
3 - رفعت عطفه لم أقرا ترجمة دكتور رفعت و لكن سألت صديق قرأها و قال لي أن ترجمات رفعت عطفه ليس رائعة مثل خالد الجبيلي و آخرون و لكن جيدة فقط
4 د.عبد الرحمن بدوي لا أريد أن أنقصه حقه أو قدره فأنا أعتقد انه كان له الأثر الأكبر في حركة الترجمة العربية فقد كان يجيد ثمان لغات يترجم عنهم امهات الكتب و لكنه للأسف كان مترجم يهتم بجودة الترجمة و لكن كان مشروعه الأهم و الأكبر أن يترجم أكبر قدر من أمهات الكتب في حياته و يعتريني شعور بأنه لم يكن ينطق أي لغة يتحدثها بطريقة صحيحة لأن ترجمته للأسماء دائمًا و ابدًا خاطئه إسبانية كانت ام يونانية و ستري هذا عندما تقرأ الأسماء لأول مرة بترجمة سليمان العطار و تجد انها لأول مرة تعني شيئًا و مألوفه للسمع المشكلة الأخري في ترجمته هو انه لا يحاول نقل الشعر بحرفية و لكن هوامشه كانت لها الأفضلية لأن ترجمة سليمان العطار هوامشها خاصة بالترجمة فقط

Which translation of Don Quixote would be the funniest and least archaic in English? I want to read this with my kid who's five. He's enjoyed some books riddled with archaic English such as The Hobbit/LOTR, Dr Dolittle, Peter Pan, Jungle Book/Just So Stories, and his current book crush- Wind in the Willows. But I'm unfamiliar with the Don Quixote translations.

These are the translations written from 1949 onward:

Samuel Putnam's translation has been characterized as wordy, pedantic, and convoluted or almost incomprehensible.

JM Cohen's translation has "fairly lifeless" prose.

Walter Starkie's unabridged translation is out of print.

Burton Raffel's translation is considered "natural" and "colloquial" sounding, but the edition available is very academic, with essays included.

John Rutherford's translation has long sentences, but uses modern language, inserts explanations into the text rather than in notes, and is said to emphasize the humor of the story.

Edith Grossman's translation uses modern language and is highly and widely praised.

Tom Lathrop's translation is a bit academic.

James H. Montgomery's translation seems to be a good modern version.

In terms of target audience, I'm guessing Edith Grossman's is the most accessible, thus most suitable for a child; John Rutherford's might also be pretty fun. However, some of the content of the story is a bit suggestive.

oooh boy I just finished the first volume and it was interesting but I'm not sure I can keep going. Is it worth it? The word that comes to mind in the first volume is 'ridiculous'. Ridiculous in the sense that the main character is crazy and half of what is written is literally crazy talk. My favorite part are the stories from the people with whom they cross paths...
