Kat & Natalie #1

The Way Home

Rate this book
All marriages have good times and bad and there are always ups and downs in life. But a woman can only hear “God, I wish we’d never gotten married” so many times before she reaches a breaking point. Finally there comes a day when he says one last hateful thing and she decides to make the son of a bitch happy and heads off to talk to the divorce attorney.

After more than two decades of marriage, Beth Morgan decides to finally jump off the rollercoaster of emotionally abusive ups and downs that her husband has inflicted upon her for years and file for divorce. During the next eighteen months, she will have to face the expected, like telling friends and family; deal with the unexpected, like re-entering the dating pool; and decide how to handle the completely unforeseen, like swing clubs and nudist resorts.

Through it all, Beth begins to recognize and appreciate her own value as a woman, independent of anyone else’s words or actions, as she seeks solid ground under her feet. This tale of modern-day marriage and divorce shows that life in America is often not what it seems, especially for those who have spent decades building a life they one day realize they no longer can or wish to live.

I thought this was well-written but it has a melancholy feel and ended strongly on that note. This is an unusual story of an even more unusual but loving f/f friendship started in college. Since this is Vitsky, that relationship involves spanking/discipline...which to me is super strange...but she wrote it in an organic way.

I'm not sure how to categorize this book. It's not lesfic or a romance. Maybe it's something reminiscent of 'Beaches', a story about two female friends who mean everything to each other and share an intimacy that is hard to define.

The book's narrative unfolds bouncing back and forth between present day and the past. And, as someone who generally hates flashbacks in books, I actually didn't mind. It was done in a way that weaved the story together instead of making it feel bogged down.

Darker themes are dealt with so don't go into this for a happy read. There's a non-explicit rape trigger, suicidal tendencies, family death, heartbreak...and a fair amount of mystery as to why the characters are behaving a certain way in present day. The mystery part is intentional, with some answers presented in book one and I'm guessing those that weren't will resolve in book two.

I'm compelled to read the next book in the series but I'm completely uncertain on what I'll find.

Hide the Wooden Spoons!

I liked how the book was broken into time frames. Some now then back to years ago, then to months ago and back to now. Not many book I have read do this. It made the story much more interesting and all the more complex, emotion wise.
I eagerly started this book yesterday evening, I was truly enjoying it and when 1am passed by I thought I should stop for the night in spite of not wanting to. I even dreamed about this tale. When I went back to it this morning, I felt as if I were the one being punished! SO much emotional turmoil, I didn't know how to feel. Kat and Nat are no longer words on a screen, they have become real.

I understand Kat, I get her, I might even be her. But there were times I just wanted to throttle her for being so clueless and fail able when Natalie needed her to be strong and disobey. I cried the first time and I cried again when I thought Natalie might be in trouble again. How blind can Kat be! I grow angrier and my heart bleeds for Natalie, I know she is all alone and is in serious trouble, it is so evident! I don't want to read anymore but I will not abandon Nat too! (I have been told I get far too involved with some characters. They stop being words on a screen and instead become friends.... I'd go to therapy but I am not usually unhappy with this)

Things end on a happier note. After reading to the end things are not quite as dire as I had feared. I can't pretend I understood Nat's choices as Ms. Vitsky did not allow me to see into Natalie's thoughts, a disappointment but to be honest I am very interested in reading more to see if her point of view will be told.

The important thing is that I know that both of these women age going to be alright. They have each other and that is all they truly need. I can not wait to read the next book in the series!!

This story is a jewel
The Way Home is a very intense and gripping story. It is one of those titles that will leave an impression on you. Accordingly, when I read the book for the first time, I was deeply moved by it. And reading it a second time let me discover once more just how much I love this title.

Kat and Natalie, the two main characters, have known each other for ten years. Right from the start of the book, the situation is tense. What Kat experiences there is so not awesome for her. Don’t get me wrong though, this is fabulous to read, as Miss Vitsky’s amazing style of writing makes you read on and on. After a disastrous situation for Kat you get the first flashback and begin to learn in detail just how lively, emotional and warmhearted Kat and Nat are. The characters are so deep and well made that you can easily understand their way of acting. As a matter of fact, Kat and Nat’s decisions, their way of thinking, their weaknesses, are basically yours. They are so very believable; and although Natalie is willing to spank Kat most of the time, it never stopped me from thinking these two could be real. Throughout the book I felt like learning about two lovely friends.

The story is told out of both women’s point of view; most parts are flashbacks that show the development of their relationship. I won’t give away much of the plot here, because this is definitely something you should find out on your own, but when I wrote that this is an intense and emotionally loaded story, I meant it. You’ll suffer with these two women, as they go through some very dire situations which do happen to many, just as you will enjoy them in their happy moments, such as most of their college years. I enjoyed this endlessly for the lightheartedness which contrasts so well with some of the very sad moments in the story.

You’ll find spankings and you’ll find a story of two amazing and most intimate friends. I have wondered how to describe the nature of their relationship better. Kat and Nat are lovers, they are as close as can be, so for me The Way Home is a love story too. But in the first place it is a story where two women care so much for each other that you can almost breathe their incredibly close connection. This is so wonderful and heartbreaking to read, as Miss Vitsky manages to bring this so close to the reader too. She has this ability to feed your imagination in wonderful ways. All in all, The Way Home has all you could wish for in a book and it is a real jewel. If possible I’d give it more than five stars.

A piece of art as much as a story to enjoy, 4 stars.

The first thing that struck me about The Way Home was the format in which this story is told. There's a very non-traditional series of time jumps that, at the start, can be hard to follow. The blurb description does this story an injustice. It sets up a plot expectation that the format doesn't fill, and the novel is so much more than that.

At the heart of the narrative is a friendship-maybe-more that grows over the kind of timespan you simply do not encounter in most romance books. And this is a romance, make no mistake. There is a domestic BDSM aspect (power exchange, spanking) that hints at some sexual overtones near the end of the story that I thoroughly enjoyed.

[trigger warning: major self-harm]

The major critique I had of this story surrounds the dominant conflict. Kat has depressive tendencies which culminate severely in two suicide attempts via sleeping pills. Either the format or the writing or both got in the way of my fully understanding this aspect of Kat. I didn't see a build-up to this kind of behavior so it caught me off guard. I'm not sure the first attempt was on-screen-- if it was then I didn't recognize it for what it was.

Anyone who enjoys the craft of writing, if you're into Tolstoy and Hemingway for their format as much as their content: read this book. If you're on vacation lounging for hours with nothing to interrupt you: read this book. There are beautiful scene pairs and excellent pacing throughout.

TL;DR: 4 stars. Beautifully written and as such, requires focus to enjoy.

I loved this book so much! The author did a great job of making her characters real. I felt their pain, and wept for them. I giggled and enjoyed their banter and play. I was so moved by the intimacy of their relationship. And I didn't even know what kind of relationship it was. Were they sisters, or were they more? The author very cleverly kept everything open to readers' interpretation. I can't wait to see what happens to them next. This is a wonderful book that will truly warm your heart.

I received this book to give an honest review.

I really wanted to give this book 5 stars! But I just had to give it a 4 rating only because I found myself sometimes lost as to what was going on.

I have to say I love all of this author's covers! There are classy and fit the book.

In The Way Home, you have two people who come together and become the best of friends! Then something tragic happens to Natalie even though you do not get the details you get the concept of what happens. From there on it seems to change the relationship of Kat and Natalie. You get the time frame of college, the years after college, the hospital stay.
But will they ever get back to being where they were before? There was not too much spanking in here, it was more of a friendship type book with a bit of spanking when Kat needed "discipline".

I did wonder about their relationship as though at times they seemed as they could have been closer than just friends but it was never written out in the book as that.

Here are a few reasons on why I gave the book 4 stars.

One part is where she is getting a package, and to ends where she says "and I never order by mail. I shrug." Then it breaks off and you are in the dorm. Was she back to day dreaming?
Another part was Natalie and Kat are taking pictures with Natalie's family. Next thing you know it switches to Natalie having a temper fit, then Kat's mom shaking her (which her mom is not there), then her dad is giving her a pencil. After that Natalie is at her desk, then I guess at a bar? I was totally lost as to what this had to do with the story and why was it bouncing from here to there. Maybe it may make sense to others but it did not for me. I found myself going back about two times after I read it the first time to see if I could understand it better but I did not.

Now the wedding? Okay Natalie got married, but why did she not want her family there exactly? She seemed really close to her family earlier in the book and now she is distancing herself?

One thing that got to me a bit was the repetitive use of Catie-with-a-C.I can understand using it once or twice but the author used it seven times.

I believe this is the first book in Anastasia Vitsky's Kat/Nat series. The only reason I say this is because I felt the book ended in a minor cliffhanger. Several threads of the story are still hanging at the end of the book, leaving the reader eagerly awaiting the next story.

The Way Home is basically two stories that have been mixed and matched into one book. Large portions of the book explore the girl's relationship in present day, where Kat worries about why Nat is in the hospital and why she's been cut off from her best friend. Other chunks of the book are devoted to two different portions of the past and reveal a great deal about the pressures the girl's relationship has been constantly deal with. The story is told entirely from Kat's POV. The fact that Anastasia is able to smoothly connect the past and present scenes in a manner that doesn't make the reader feel discombobulated is a testament to her talents.

Although there are times when Kat can be irritating, her relationship with Nat is fluid and interesting. Most importantly it's a very organic relationship that I feel most people will be able to relate to.

The Way Home is a very quiet book I think most people will enjoy.

Addicted To Anastasia Vitsky's Books

I couldn't put this down. The relationship is between Kat and Nat made me wish I lived in their world. Beautiful, funny, and full of emotion for this reader.
From the moment Kat meets Natalie, her assigned roommate in her first year of college, the two girls connect on a level that had me wishing I was Kat. Nat takes Kat under her wing, gives her strength and love, things that Kat isn't used to, and manages to make spanking both fun and therapeutic. Best friends? Near-sisters? Or could there be something else between the two?
The book goes back and forth in time, from the first time they met to the present day, a style of writing I love as all the pieces fall into place. I don't want to spoil anything, but rest assured this is a book to be read over and over.
Off to read the sequel, and everything else Anastasia Vitsky and her hot little hands have written!

The Way Home was a tale of love and friendship with well-developed, likeable characters and an engaging plot. I was immediately drawn in and ended up reading the book in one sitting. The story goes back and forth between the past and the present, showing glimpses of Kat and Natalie’s college years and also focusing on the present day where Natalie has shut Kat out. Kat and Natalie used to be best friends and in fact had a unique relationship that involved loving disciplinary spankings. I don’t want to put spoilers in my review, but let’s just say that the book ends happily enough, though there were several unanswered questions that have me especially looking forward to the sequel. Great book!

From the very beginning of this story, I fell in love with Kat and Natalie. The complex emotional life of both women, so lovingly portrayed by the author. I enjoyed the skips in time as we saw their relationship when the met in college, in the present day, and then "9 months" ago. Using the voice of Kat in her naivety, her fragility was a wonderful storytelling choice. I found myself rooting for them to fix any problems they encountered. I most loved Natalie's elderly neighbor Lily and the little joys that Kat found in helping the lady. I'm so glad to know there's a second book. Having read the description, I knew this promised to be a very different sort of story and Anastasia kept her promise with a wonderfully challenge story.

I started this with a lot of curiosity and a little trepidation not too sure how I would feel about f/f spanking.

Really enjoyable emotional tale about two women and while its clear they love each other dearly, even by the end their relationship sadly hasn't reached its full potential. Touching and often heartbreaking I'm now looking forward to the next book in the series as I really ended up with a huge affinity for the characters.

Was surprised at the depth to this story. This is no light weight read - spanking story. It is the story of two intense women with their own needs. They have so much to go through. The story is from Kat's perspective and goes back and forth from present to past events. Can't wait to read the sequel.

This is a story of two complicated girls who develop a friendship like no other. Difficult circumstances arise as well as personal breakdowns. The story is told in phases with links from the past merging into the present. Good job Ms Vitsky.

I get this story…I really do. We all at some point in our lives go through some small or large form of verbal abuse. If married we all find that it takes work it isn’t easy. It isn’t perfect. We work together to obtain the perfect relationship but there is always things that aren’t perfect; we don’t live in a perfect world.

While I thought that the story was full of potential I felt it fell flat with the characters. I wasn’t able to relate to them. They weren’t as strong as I thought they could or should have been. Beth just wasn’t someone that I was able to grasp a hold of as a person. She was kind of flat and one dimensional. I also felt that her husband/ex was the same way. The men in this book where just a little too whiney for me.

Ms. Sharp dealt with the marriage falling apart, the divorce, letting others know, and dating again in such a fashion that the story moved on without a hitch.

I however was not convinced with the characters. It was however a little far-fetched that Beth went from a marriage of twenty plus years to a nudist colony, a swingers experience and even plastic surgery in no time at all. I guess that is why it is fiction.

Overall it wasn’t a bad story it was just not great in this reader’s views.

The Way Home by Anastasia Vitsky is a story of Natalie and Kat's unique and extremely close relationship, spanning from their college years to present day.
I enjoy the way Ms. Vitsky changes point of view so that we can read what both women are feeling at different times. I often felt the need to grab Kat by the shoulders to shake her and ask why she behaved as she did. Often I wondered the same of Natalie.
However, the many twists and turns of their lives always bring them back together again. From dealing with traumatic family situations and tragedy to the drama of student life on college campus, this story was packed full of tears and much happiness as well.

I love the way Ms. Vitsky's character's are relatable and real. The depth of her writing once again has me anticipating the next part of the story to see what happens with Natalie and Kat. I highly recommend this book and hope you will give it your valuable reading time!

This story is an emotional journey from the first page. Kat comes from a poor, dysfunctional family while Natalie comes from money and love. Natalie quickly steps in to steer Kat in the right direction on the first day of college. This story spans the next ten years looking at the present while remembering the past. I liked how the author handled the issues involved. Some subject matter was very sensitive but was handled with grace and consideration. The reader intrinsically feels the depth of caring between the two women. I had a hard time following some of the flashbacks and felt the need to flip back and forth to make sure I did not miss anything. Overall this is a wonderful story of friendship, love and selflessness.

Kat and Nat... what really drove me a little nutty while reading this is that I was never sure exactly what their relationship was. I mean, it seemed a given, yet at the same time nothing ever seems to really confirm any of it. I guess it's like life, it really doesn't matter what is or isn't going on - but, it's something that I was left needing to know. The characters are wonderfully developed and you're left with the feeling that you could have a great time with them. This was one where I was glad I was able to continue reading with the next story right away.

While not my usual reading fair, I enjoyed this book. Reading Kat and Natalie’s first book kept my interest as the characters were well developed and the book took some really good, but unexpected turns. The Kat and Nat are genuine and real and reflect the best and worst of us all. “The Way Home” left me with some questions, but I’m sure they will be answered in subsequent books and this I believe is the mark of a good serial author. I do recommend this book.

Sit back, read and enjoy!

It is a story about love, a unique friendship, their struggles. Both so different from each other. The characters are well developed but that's the power of Anastasia. There are so many different emotions in this story and I have enjoyed it immensely. I can't imagine that there is a reader who doesn't like it.
