Like any other James Patterson book, this one is filled with great. characters and a fast-paced story along with suspense that will leave you guessing until the end. I think that Patterson and Allen make a good team with a new character that we are all going to love.

Stafford Lee is one of the best lawyers in the state of Mississippi having never lost a case. Stafford is faced with some unexpected life changing events and finds himself on the opposite side of the defense table. Who can Stafford trust though and will he be able to prove his innocence? You will have to read this one to find out how Stafford comes out. It will keep you guessing until the end so hold on for the ride.

I voluntarily read and reviewed this book and all opinions are my own. Thanks to NetGalley, the authors and the publisher for an advanced copy of this book. I know you will enjoy this one as I did.

This was just a great book! At first I thought the phrase, “If it wasn’t for bad luck I’d have no luck at all” as very fitting for the lead character, Stafford Lee Penney. It starts with a highly controversial trial with Stafford as the defense attorney. His unpopular role is augmented by pressure from the father of the accused who is suspected of being mob connected.
Tragedy takes place. Stafford hits rock bottom in an alcohol stupor. His friends work to save him but as things are looking up he is accused of murder.
This story takes so many twists and turns. This writing ends with a phenomenal twist that makes the ride all the more worthwhile. Believable characters, plenty of suspense, never ceasing action, all packaged in a superb read. I highly recommend this book to my fellow GR friends.

4.5 stars - rounded up! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book was just what I was looking for to get me out of my 2-3 star book slump! You just can’t go wrong with James Patterson. He’s one of my favorite authors. His books are super fast paced filled with very short cliff hanging chapters, suspense, action and twists!

This one is a legal thriller set in Mississippi. Now, if you love courtroom drama like I do, then this book is a must read! The courtroom scenes do not disappoint. Awesome characters with a male lead you can’t help but root for. The ending was terrific!

If you even remotely like legal thrillers please grab this one. It’s so good that I’m crossing my fingers that this will be the start of a new series.

In a strong collaborative effort, James Patterson and Nancy Allen create this solid legal thriller. Breaking from Patterson’s quick chapter storytelling, the authors delve deeply and tackle a tale that will have readers up late into the night to better understand what’s going on. As the authors weave such a suspenseful tale, they explore the law and its nuances, as well as the personal struggles of one who has spent so much time on a pedestal. Patterson and Allen prove their mettle once more with this strong novel.

Biloxi, Mississippi is blessed to have Stafford Lee Penney as one of its residents. The small-town lawyer has a major reputation for winning each case he tries before a jury. Dressed for success, Penney is a local hero and many eagerly engage with him when they see him around town. Penney uses this fame to his advantage, basking in the glow of the praise showered upon him, while still taking cases that use him to the legal limits.

After a harrowing case that has Penney eke out a victory, his wife is brutally killed, one of three bodies found in her home. This pushes Penney to the brink and he spirals into a world of booze, where nothing has a real impact on anything for him. His career is in tatters and his reputation is blemished, but Penney could not care less. His wife’s killer remains unclear, though some would posit that one of the other bodies in the room could be a clue to the truth.

Those closest to Penney take pity on him and secure him the help he needs. Penney’s life needs a complete resetting and he takes things seriously once more. Taking in an intern, a local law student, Penney begins trying to make a renewed effort to change himself. When the police arrest someone for his wife’s murder and storm into the Penney household, a case arises that could turn Stafford Lee Penney’s life on its head. Penney must use all his skills as a #1 lawyer to ensure that he does not get disbarred and locked away forever. Stafford Lee Penney will have to show his prowess once more before a jury of his peers, with yet another life on the line. Patterson and Allen prove their collaborative efforts are well worth the reader’s time in this great legal thriller.

Patterson and Allen have produced some stellar novels in the past, ticking all the boxes when it comes to legal thrillers. A strong foundation is necessary to keep the reader engaged, which the authors do effectively from the opening pages while keeping a high calibre. Chapters of a decent length permit the story to develop as the reader hungers to know more. Allen’s perspectives help flavour this book and complement Patterson’s style quite well. Decent characters help add depth to the story and leaves things open for more starring Stafford Lee Penney. I can only hope these two will work together once more and prove their collaborative effort will keep these writing at the top of the genre.

Plot points emerge from the opening pages of the book, leaving the reader wondering where things are headed. The authors provide great twists to keep the story moving and unpredictable. This is key in a legal thriller, where the law might be linear and the reader must work throughout the unknown to better understand where things are headed. Allen’s solo work is something I will have to add to my reading list, in an effort to see if she is as strong working independently.

Kudos, Mr. Patterson and Madam Allen, for keeping me enthralled throughout this reading experience.

I've found I can't lose with a James Patterson book. This one is co-authored by Nancy Allen and is a tense, gripping legal drama - reminded me much of a John Grisham novel, it's that good.

Description:
Move over, John Grisham! Here’s the fastest, sharpest legal thriller in years. Biloxi’s best criminal defense attorney becomes the nation’s prime suspect when his wife is murdered. He’s never lost a case, but can he win when he’s presumed guilty?

Stafford Lee Penney is a small-town lawyer with a big-time reputation for winning every case he tries. In his sharp suits and polished Oxford shoes, Penney is Biloxi, Mississippi’s #1 Lawyer and top local celebrity.

Just as Penney notches his latest courtroom victory, his wife is scandalously killed. He spirals into a legal and personal losing streak, damaging his reputation and ruining his career.

That’s when Penney makes a bold decision. He stops trading on his power-lawyer identity and creates a new lawyer lifeguard. Moonlighting at the beach, showing up to court in flip-flops, mentoring a law student, the new Penney is at first unrecognizable.

It’s said that a lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client. But when Penney’s accused of murder, the #1 Lawyer will find a way to triumph.

My Thoughts:
This is a truly great legal thriller with dramatic courtroom scenes and lots of avenues to pursue. Stafford Lee is a fascinating protagonist, but he has his flaws and as the story moves along this becomes personal and then he ends up getting charged with a murder. And wow! He decides to represent himself at trial? No attorney would do that would they? My eyes were glued to page and I raced through this fast-paced, exciting book. Then the ending was totally unexpected! I highly recommend this to anyone who likes legal drama. I hope this becomes a series as I would like more of Stafford Lee. James Patterson is an exceptional story teller.

Thanks to Little, Brown and Company through Netgalley for an advance copy. Expected publication on March 18, 2024.

I need to be honest here. My first thought when I read this book cover was that James Patterson is trying to write a John Grisham novel. The lead character is a trial lawyer in Biloxi, Mississippi… Seriously? The lead character is standing trial for murder? One we assume he’s innocent of? Seriously? How does this not have John Grisham written all over it? I even clicked onto Amazon and typed in John Grisham, and when his books appeared on the screen, “The #1 Lawyer” was actually listed with them. I am not kidding. I guess that imitation is the greatest form of flattery. At least it is in this case if I cannot get that image out of my mind by the time I finish reading this book…

So, let’s get started. “The #1 Lawyer” is the story about Stafford Lee Penney (I swear that sure seems a lot like a Grisham character name too), a second-generation trial lawyer who’s been successfully practicing law for 15 years in hometown Biloxi. He is a local celebrity, currently separated from his wife, and starting the trial of his career.

Stafford Lee is defending Daniel Caro, a doctor charged with killing one of his young female patients with whom he was having an affair. To add to Stafford’s pressure is knowing that Daniel’s father, Hiram, owner of the local casino and member of previous Dixie Mafia, is keeping a close eye on the lawyer who is defending his son. Exoneration is the only outcome that will be acceptable.

Aided by his private investigator and close friend, Stafford Lee finds himself fighting not only for his client, but for his own life, as well as that of his team…

The big question that I am trying to answer is did Patterson make me forget about the obvious Grisham flavor? The answer is yes and no. Let me explain by sharing my thoughts on the strengths and weaknesses of this book.

Strengths included the characters and the overarching story. It worked best when it focused on the individual characters, their unique individual skillsets, interactions between themselves and with others throughout the book. Stafford Lee, Jenny, and Rue were very likeable, empathetic, and cheer-worthy leading characters. They drew you into their lives and challenges immediately, turning the book into an instant page turner. Even Mason played a good supporting role in his stiff and curmudgeonly way. Their banter and friendships were interesting, as well as how each of them had their own weaknesses and foibles that they tried so hard to hide.

The authors threw these characters into a fast and constant moving frenetic pace in short chapter format following the tried-and-true Patterson formula. Even with the extreme Grisham-like feel to the story, the authors were still able to make this an enjoyable, escapist read. It flowed and the pages turned quickly. I started it on a Saturday evening and finished it 24 hours later. I often refer to Patterson novels as escapist mind candy and this was definitely one of his better ones if you ignored the feeling that he was trying to write a John Grisham Jake Brigance novel.

Weaknesses included a couple of big things. At least for me, they were very pertinent. First, Stafford Lee Penney comes across a lot like one of John Grisham’s most popular characters, Jake Brigance. Both are small town lawyers with strong ethics and good intentions. Both get beat-up by bad guys multiple times before figuring out how to win in the courtroom. I have to say that I kept seeing the mental image of Mathew McConaughey playing Jake Brigance in the role of Stafford Lee in my head. It never went away. Again, I guess that imitation serves as flattery, at least it does to me.

The other weakness to me has to do with the ending. I will be careful to avoid any spoilers, but the construction of the murder mystery is pretty predictable in this one. There are a couple of connected plotlines, but I was able to figure to figure out both of them pretty early on, which means that most readers will also be able to do the same. It was not that hard to put the pieces together once you realized that the authors were spending a lot of their time on the courtroom scenes to keep you from focusing on connecting the dots. However, this sleight of hand approach was easy to see through.

Back to my original question on this being an attempt at writing a Grisham focused legal thriller. My overall answer is yes. However, the interesting thing is that, even knowing that, it’s still an enjoyable read with interesting storylines and entertaining courtroom moments. For me, some of the legal aspects were a bit over-the-top, but that was mainly for plotline purposes (as well as some social justice commentary). Even seeing Stafford Lee as an imitation of Grisham’s Jake Brigance, his character still delivered well in his leading role.

Overall, if I wasn’t a regular reader of John Grisham, and had no other reference point, I would give this a 4.5-star rating based on the characters and courtroom drama (less the predictable ending). However, honesty requires that I admit my concern for this having been way too focused on copying Grisham's legal thriller style and subtract a star from my rating (maybe it should be more…) and give it a 3.5-star rating. On the flip side, I am sure that many Patterson fans will find themselves having no issues with the Grisham imitation and thoroughly enjoy this novel for its own merits (which are actually pretty good if you ignore the Grisham influence).

In the end I leave it to your own reading experience to choose for yourself. As Shakespeare point out so eloquently, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder…”

Another winner from one of my all time favourite authors, James Patterson. From start to finish, I was completely absorbed in this story. A legal thriller set in Biloxi, say no more!! I do hope this is the start of a new series as these characters, especially Stafford Lee, got into my heart.

Stafford Lee Penney is a lawyer in Mississippi and he never loses. Everyone wants his services, he cannot put a foot wrong. Until his estranged wife is murdered, and he becomes the number one suspect. A life changing moment, he will never be the same again.

There is so much going on in this story that I just want you to read it for yourselves. To those who have no read a Patterson books yet (and I am shaking my head at you all!) you need to pick this up. It is full of compelling courtroom scenes, corruption, murder, friendship and heart. Stafford Lee is a character that you just want to see succeed.

I. cannot recommend this book enough. Thank you so much to Little, Brown Company for my advanced copy of this book to read. Always an absolute joy to get early copies from a favourite author. Published on March 18th, get yourself a copy, you won’t regret it.

The twists and turns in THE #1 LAWYER are going to keep you up late into the night trying to figure it out. One minute you believe you know who did it and the next you are sitting there shaking your head, wondering what the heck just happened. I had my suspicions, I had it all figured out, or so I thought, and BAM…….wrong again! Once you start reading, trust me, you aren’t going to be able to stop! When everything is finally revealed, well, you won’t believe it! I hope James Patterson turns this into a series. I would love to meet up with all the characters of Biloxi, MS once again!

James Patterson has been able to recruit extraordinary co-authors through the years (Maxine Pietro, Brian Sitts, Mark Seal, Mike Lupica, James O. Born, Marshall Karp, Candice Fox, and even President Bill Clinton and Michael Crichton). There’s a James Patterson co-authored book or a “James Patterson presents” novel or kids book arriving nearly every month. Most of these authors have their own standalone books as well. It’s probably possible to read 50 James Patterson Universe books a year.

Nancy Allen is part of that amazing group with the Ruby Bozarth series (“The Jailhouse Lawyer” and “Juror #3) and she’s the perfect collaborator for possibly a new series featuring Biloxi lawyer (moving into Grisham geography) Stanford Lee Penney, a fancy attorney who’s fallen on difficult times after the murder of his wife. Co-author Allen is a former Missouri Assistant Attorney General, so her Southern courtroom experience is invaluable. Our latest series star (I am confident there will be another Stanford Lee book) recreates himself as a “lifeguard lawyer” (including flip-flops).

My secret Patterson obsession kicked in again, because, as always, the standard book structure is short, thrilling chapters, and always about 100 chapters (good for quick breaks or distractions interrupting reading). Other authors couldn’t get away with that, but it makes Patterson + collaborator popcorn books unique to me. There is no chance of a long, droning middle part. Nancy Allen helped transport me to the world of Southern law in this quick novel. 5 stars!

Literary Pet Peeve Checklist:
Green Eyes (only 2% of the real world, yet it seems like 90% of all fictional females): NO The only green eye is also red, purple, and black due to getting punched.
Horticultural Faux Pas (plants out of season or growing zones, like daffodils in autumn or bougainvillea in Alaska): NO Appropriately regional Kiowa nuts and Elliot pecans make an appearance.

Thank you to Little, Brown and Company and NetGalley for a free advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review!

“Gobblicious” is the perfect word to describe this compelling novel. This book masterfully blends a riveting courtroom legal battle with an irresistible mystery-thriller.

James Patterson teams up for his second collaboration with the accomplished Nancy Allen. She brings not only her own thrilling novels to the table but also her legal expertise as a former assistant attorney general and prosecutor, adding authenticity to this whirlwind tale. Patterson’s own talents for characterization and plotting shine throughout this suspenseful story.

Stafford Lee Penney, a local Biloxi hero, relishes engaging with his constituents. Revered as a criminal defense attorney who has never lost a case, he staunchly believes in the Fifth Amendment’s right to due process for everyone, regardless of personal feelings about the client. He finds himself embroiled in a highly explosive and controversial case, defending Dr. Daniel Caro, who is accused of murdering his lover, Aurora Gates. Despite the circumstantial evidence, the prosecuting district attorney, Henry Gordon-Jones—whose niece is the victim—presents damning evidence, including photos and expert testimony suggesting that Aurora’s body shows signs of strangulation and a gunshot wound, alongside other brutal injuries. Penney’s cross-examination highlights his client’s humanity and service to the community, even suggesting the possibility of another suspect. After a tumultuous trial, the verdict of “Not Guilty” leads to courtroom chaos, including an assault on Penney by the victim’s father, Benjamin Gates.

The plot thickens when Penney receives a phone call about the murder of his estranged wife, Carrie, found in their bed next to a man whose face has been gruesomely disfigured. Next to the bed, the authorities discover Benjamin Gates, dead from an apparent suicide. Overwhelmed with grief, Penney’s life spirals into alcoholism. The situation worsens when Dr. Caro’s wife is also found murdered, making Penney a prime suspect. He decides to defend himself, supported by his long-time friends Mason Burnett, a successful trial lawyer, and Jenny Glaser, a private investigator.

The authors excel at storytelling, weaving multiple plot lines, twists, and unexpected events into a suspenseful tale full of menace and intrigue. This unpredictable narrative culminates in an explosive finale, deftly addressing themes of racism, corruption, and the complex ramifications of both friendship and love. Thanks to NetGalley and Little, Brown and Company for supplying an uncorrected proof in exchange for an honest review.

Somewhat slow start but the action picked up after the first third. I wish the blurb did not reveal the eventual murder of his wife since it did not happen until much later on. I'm not sure I like the ending and the final plot twist and his father added very little to the plot, when he could be quite an interesting side character. Overall, it's a taut and entertaining legal thriller.

4.0 / 5

A Patterson book that does not disappoint, those that enjoy the legal thrillers this is the book to go to. It has every courthouse drama and procedure (but the accuracy might be another question for someone to confirm it is does stand). This is a classic Patterson book, gripping from start to finish, well thought out, clear plot and well written.

A legal thriller set in Biloxi, we follow Stafford Lee Penney, a defence lawyer who has never lost a trail. He’s in a high profile case defending a doctor accused of double murder, he’s riding an all time high until…. His wife gets murdered and his world comes crashing down. Before he starts rebuilding himself and fixing his reputation… he’s charged with the murder of the defendants wife. He’s on the biggest trail himself to defend his name. His life is on the line.

This is a solid book, and surprisingly found it gripping to read all 421 pages in a span of one day (after coming back from holiday). I really enjoyed the legal procedures and perspectives shown in the courthouse which added another dimension to the plot. Overall I really enjoyed this read and would really recommend it if you’re a fan of legal thrillers!

****3/15/24**** Read this on a train trip - thank you NetGalley for the ARC to read and review!

James Patterson is very consistent enjoyable author for me, and I think co-author Nancy Allen added a great deal of legal authenticity to the book. The book is pretty much as described - a talented southern attorney goes through a personal misfortune, career tanks, he rebuilds only to face a massive challenge to his career and personal future. Ok, we all know Patterson books resolve plotlines - this will end up ok, but how will he and his co-writer take the reader to that finish line?

This book has good characters and a relatively satisfying plot twist/resolution. But why does it need to be set in Biloxi, Mississippi? It is toooo close to John Grisham's base of Memphis and haven't we read enough about southern law firms? Can't it be based in Chicago or Montana or Indiana? I did feel Stafford Lee's trajectory was a bit depressing and not quite believable- I thought he would have a better way to handle his personal and legal troubles, but I'll suspend those thoughts to read Patterson. I did think the flip-flop angle was kind of weird and out of any realm of normal attorney character. Be a lifeguard, fine (slightly odd choice IMO)! But no flip flops in the courtroom. I felt they were borrowing from Michael Connelly's (The Lincoln Lawyer) main character having the 'defining quirk' of driving in the Lincoln car. But flip flops don't really make us think of legal powerhouses, and that's what we all really want to read about, isn't it?

My last gripe has to do with the book summary from the publisher. Why does the reader need to be told Stafford Lee's wife is killed??? Are there not enough readers willing to read a book by this major author without being spoon fed major plot elements before they even open the book? Please, I beg publishers to stop doing this and let us readers be surprised by something!

Overall, this was an enjoyable read and I look forward to seeing where Patterson goes with this new series. AND I will seek out Nancy Allen's writing to try it out. 4-stars.

****3/8/24**** Thank you, NetGalley, for giving me the opportunity to review James Patterson's new LEGAL thriller! That's right, Patterson is getting into Grisham's territory, and I am thrilled as a fan of legal fiction and Patterson's writing! Why he chose to set it in Mississippi is anyone's guess, but I'm 13% in and already hooked! Pub date: March 18, 2024.

3.5 rounded up.

A good rating for a Paterson collaboration is hard to come by, but this one works. It did all seem a little too familiar to a Grisham legal thriller and I’d love to know the inspiration behind having such a close connection to another author’s work.

The plot is entertaining and doesn’t require much concentration especially with the trademark short chapters. There are quite a few plot holes and the ending is syrupy-sweet.

Overall, it’s a good, easy read.

#1 Lawyer is definitely my favorite James Patterson book in a LONG time! The story kept me on the edge of my seat and I couldn’t stand to put the book down. This was a thrilled whodunit and I could figure out the person(s) responsible.
However, I absolutely hated the main character’s name. Stafford Lee is definitely an out of the box name and it just annoyed me so badly.
Luckily the book was good enough to sort of distract me from the awful name. But I really did enjoy it.

"The #1 Lawyer” by James Patterson and Nancy Allen was an entertaining 5-star read! Stafford Lee Penney is undefeated as a defense attorney in Biloxi, Mississippi. Shortly after winning the biggest case, his wife is murdered, sending Stafford Lee into a dark spiral. With the help of his friends Mason and Jenny, he claws his way back into the courtroom.

I have always been a fan of James Patterson’s novels. Over the last couple of years, I felt like we weren’t getting his best work. That changed with “The #1 Lawyer”; this story was outstanding. The story has a fast pace that makes you want to keep reading. If you are a fan of James Patterson or legal thrillers, then you need to run to the bookstore to get this book!
