Overall this book was a very good short, it explained one of my favorite villains in this series and did it well.

I loved the fact that you saw Mapleshade before she became evil because she was honestly just a brokenhearted cat who was betrayed by her Clan, and lover. I was really astounded about how deep her Clan hated her and how fast they turned against her.

The beginning of the story was a bit rushed and I really think that a Super Edition could of been deserving of this character, so the story was a bit rushed, but overall an entertaining story that I enjoyed.

A sad thing to read, though I knew it would be since I've read almost every Warriors book to date.

Reading some reviews across the internet, some reviewers stated that Mapleshade was so cracked she thought

I actually wish this was a Super Edition.

Fans of 'Warriors' saga know Mapleshade as the cruel and vindictive cat that enjoys making others suffer, someone who was so wicked that her spirit couldn't find rest even after her death, doomed to haunt the hell-like Place of No Stars forever. However, that wasn't always the case, and this novella tells the story of how Mapleshade started on the bloody path of vengeance.

Mapleshade begins her path as an ordinary warrior of ThunderClan, except that she has a secret – her relationship with Appledusk from RiverClan, whom she had been meeting in secret and whose kits she expects. It's clear that Mapleshade loves Appledusk and her kits with all her heart, and this love is her most defining feature, though she is also dangerously naive if she believes that her kits would bring ThunderClan and RiverClan together, since her kits wouldn't be able to be loyal to both Clans and would have to choose anyway. But Mapleshade's troubles didn't even begin with her forbidden relationship. No, they began with a lie. Technically, when asked about the father of her kits, Mapleshade didn't lie, and it was Frecklewish who assumed that it was Birchface, her late brother and Oakstar's son, but Mapleshade didn't deny it, thus lying by omission. And this very lie was what backfired greatly and caused Mapleshade and her kits to be cast out of the Clan.

It's no excuse for Oakstar's actions, of course, and there is no way to know whether Mapleshade's situation would've changed if ThunderClan didn't think Birchface to be a father of her kits. It was really heart-wrenching to see Mapleshade cast out of the Clan, and I'm appalled that Oakstar would not only exile Mapleshade, but throw out the innocent kits as well. Yet at the same time I could understand everyone's reactions, because Mapleshade wasn't the only one affected by this tangled situation. I could see that Ravenwing just tried to do what he viewed as his duty and what he thought was right for the Clan, and I could feel Oakstar and Frecklewish's anger since Mapleshade's lies practically trampled Birchface's name into the mud, especially with tension between the Clans so high. The final of Mapleshade's plight is tragic beyond belief as she has to withstand a blow after terrible blow. Not only she loses the faith of her Clanmates and is exiled from the only home she ever knew, but the lives of her kittens are lost in a raging river, and even the tom she loves, Appledusk, turns away from her and disowns her. Mapleshade lost everything. And so she resolved to make every cat that wronged her pay and avenge her kits' death, even if it's the last thing she would do. The sweet and caring she-cat that we met in the beginning of the story is no more, and all that remains is a merciless killer obsessed with vengeance.

'Mapleshade's Vengeance' left me with conflicted feelings. Did Mapleshade suffer much more than she deserved? Yes. Can I understand her grief? Yes. Does that excuse her murdering three cats whose fault in her kittens' death is stretchy at best? Heck no! She assumes that everyone wanted her kits' death while it's clear that all the cats were shocked by the outcome. Ravenwing may have made a bad decision by revealing the connection between Mapleshade and Appledusk, and he probably could have held this knowledge back without being disloyal to ThunderClan, but do not forget that he received a sign from StarClan itself and considered it his duty to act on their will. Not to mention that Frecklewish's only fault was failing to save Mapleshade's kits, but would you blame an ordinary passer-by for not rushing into a burning building? It can be assumed that as a ThunderClan cat, Frecklewish wasn't a strong swimmer, and she thought that RiverClan warriors were already racing for help. In fact, I think that Oakstar deserves the blame for the death of Mapleshade's kits much more than Frecklewish, but for some reason she doesn't even think of targeting him.

And then there is Appledusk. Let me be honest, that tom is a prick. He swears love to Mapleshade, he reassures her how glad he would be to become a father – and gets together with Reedshine practically at the same time, without breaking up with Mapleshade or explaining anything, not to mention not even sparing a word for Mapleshade when she needs it most. He is not the most pleasant person, but again, does that mean that he deserves death? Again, heck no! In fact, once you think on it, his anger toward Mapleshade for the death of their kits is at least partly justified. Really, what was Mapleshade thinking when she made her kits cross the river during a storm? It would've been understandable if the flood was unexpected and the storm didn't start until too late, but it was already a downpour when Mapleshade and the kits arrived to the river. Besides, after leaving RiverClan Mapleshade uses a Twoleg bridge to cross the river, begging a question as to why she didn't try to go there in the first place, even if it would've been further than crossing by the stepping stones. I know that grief and anger can make anyone blind, but Mapleshade goes further than that. She turns her grief and pain into boundless hate and rage, so no matter how much I pity her and her kits, I can't help but say wholeheartedly that she was the one who made the monster out of herself.

Great glimpse into the life of the one of the most mysterious villains

Mapleshade has intrigued me since we first met her in "Crookedstar's Promise." Ever since, I've waited eagerly for the story of the first female villain, and "Mapleshade's Vengeance" is a superb book. I was disappointed, however, that we didn't get to see more of her life as a loyal warrior, yet there was room in "Goosefeather's Curse" for plenty of his mewling kithood. It seems like with each new edition, the timeline becomes more and more jumbled. In "Battles of the Clans," we read about ThunderClan's victory over SkyClan before they fled for good. We see Nettleclaw (formerly NettlePAW), Seedpelt, deputy under Redstar, not Oakstar, and a reference to a gray tabby I can only assume is Bloomheart. "Mapleshade's Vengeance."
Considering we only knew a brief part of her timeline, I think there would be enough story to fill a Super Edition rather than the expansion of Mothflight's story. The ebook didn't quite do Mapleshade justice, but it's a ridiculously fun read

Premise: Despite the tension between their Clans, Mapleshade of ThunderClan and Appledusk of RiverClan strive to keep their forbidden love affair a secret. But then, Mapleshade gives birth to three kits, and the truth of their lineage is soon exposed. Unable to tolerate such treachery, ThunderClan exiles their disgraced warrior. From there, Mapleshade is forced to watch as her world crashes around her. And when all is said and done, she comes back a changed cat, with an immense craving for revenge on those who had wronged her.

Story/Writing: Man, out of all the novellas I've read so far in this series, this might be my favorite. In less than a hundred pages, it had me completely invested in Mapleshade's story and her descent into madness. I loved the way the authors brought out her thoughts and feelings through the writing. It made me feel like I was looking into the mind of someone who's gone pure evil. The end especially gave me goosebumps and chills. What I also really liked though was that the writers do present Mapleshade with choices to turn her life around, and that they don't blame her downward spiral entirely on those who'd done her wrong. But…one doesn't become arguably one of the most notorious villains in this series by making a ton of morally good choices.

Characters: While this isn't to say I didn't get into the characters in "Cloudstar's Journey" – and while it could be because I've gotten used to expecting characters I'm not too familiar with – I was really into this cast! You particularly get mad at how Mapleshade is treated by them, yet you don't agree with how much they suffer at her paws, so to speak. Like I said in a previous review, they may be cats, but they felt really human.

Mapleshade: Oh man…what a great villain. Probably the best in the series so far. And as I said earlier, given how she later on instigates some huge events by counseling other villains, it's kind of ironic that ThunderClan – the Clan of heroes – produced one of the baddest villains in Clan history. Anyway, Mapleshade's transformation was believable yet also creepy. And by the time she dies and goes to the Dark Forest, you get the sense that she's truly become an entity of evil. Still, I felt awful for her at first. In one day, she was exiled from her Clan, lost all of her kits when they drowned – and to top it all off, her former lover blamed her for their deaths, turned her away, and went to mate with another cat! No wonder Mapleshade loses it! But when she really started going down hill – murdering one cat for each dead kit – it was almost scary. I saw the signs of her dark personality in the beginning, but little by little the story tears the layers off until she's finally seen for who she is. She not only mourns her drowned kits, she has delusions of them. She not only wants revenge, she's out for blood. And you'd better hope you're not on her hit list!

Ravenwing, Frecklewish, and Appledusk: The three cats who'd wronged Mapleshade, and end up dead at her claws. I will give Ravenwing this. He was simply paying attention to the omens StarClan gave him, and was only doing what he believed was right. It was honestly kind of frightening when Mapleshade murders him in front of the Moonstone. That's like murdering a priest in front of an altar. She even dug up his body for it to be crowfood! Frecklewish in the beginning was pretty harsh – but when Mapleshade lured her to Snakerocks, and let her get bit and blinded by a snake, I realized even she didn't deserve to die in such an awful way. As for Appledusk, I definitely say he could've been more merciful to Mapleshade, even if she did try to get the kits to cross the raging river. But I just found it gut-wrenching when she cut the throat of the cat she'd once loved. I loved the way all three of these characters were written. They may have treated Mapleshade badly, but they didn't deserve to be treated even worse by her.

Various Other Characters: Once again, I really like that the authors are willing to take the risk every now and then of making their characters a little bit unlikable. While I know romances between cats of different Clans is strongly discouraged, I got frustrated that ThunderClan and RiverClan had to start this feud at all. Then again if they hadn't, we wouldn't have gotten this terrific story. Oakstar and Darkstar seemed like decent enough leaders at first – then I was appalled at how cold they acted toward Mapleshade. Speaking of which, I liked her kits and their deaths were just utterly tragic, especially considering what they led to. Oddly enough, though he's not featured all that much in this story, I really liked Myler and how kind he was to Mapleshade. He extended a paw to her, but she sadly refused to take it.

Overall: If you're ready to read a creepy Halloween-like origin story of a villain who gives into her rage and hatred, this is a fantastic one to pick up! It's easily one of the most haunting titles in the series that I've read thus far, and it was a novella! Bizarrely enough, I look forward to reading how Mapleshade continues to wreak havoc on the Clans, especially considering she's gonna do it from beyond the grave.

This book was better than most of the novellas, mostly due to the fact that it wasn't rushed and didn't time jump so much. Goosefeather's Curse was interesting, but too rushed, making it difficult to read.

To start off, no cat in this book is without fault. Even before Mapleshade lost her kits, she was delusional and a sadist waiting to be revealed. This is proved several times, one of which is when she digs up Ravenwing to be eaten by the hawks. She told herself time and time again that her kits and relationship with Appledusk would bring peace between RiverClan and ThunderClan, while any sensible cat could tell it would just make matters worse. Once her kits died, her brain truly unhinged and her sadism was brought forth, as well as her delusions becoming more prominent in a mental health way(for example, thinking her kits were talking to her to kill Frecklewish, Ravenwing, and Appledusk).

Oakstar and Frecklewish clearly had their fair share of problems, including abandonment issues when Birchface died and lack of stability when Mapleshade lied about the kits' father(i.e. Frecklewish attacking Mapleshade after the father of her kits was revealed). Also, they showed biased opinions towards Mapleshade's exile, since Oakstar was Birchface's father. Perhaps Clan life was more strict then, giving more explanation for the exile, but then it wouldn't be able to justify not exiling Appledusk from RiverClan. Clearly, banishing three kits is severe and unjustified by almost any standard.

Appledusk's relationship with Mapleshade was heartbreaking, as horrible as Mapleshade was. It was horrifying for readers when the kits drowned (especially because the Erins made the kits so likable and sweet). It was psychologically tormenting because you siding want to feel sympathy for Mapleshade, but it was so sad and you really felt bad for her. Nonetheless, her actions were definitely not justified by any account.

Appledusk was pretty sleazy, especially when he sold Mapleshade out when her kits had just died. He ruthlessly lied to get himself out of a bad situation, and also to get out of a dying relationship with no merit, considering he moved onto a cat that piqued his interest, once Mapleshade lost value in his eyes.

All in all, this was my favorite novella, and I'm glad we were able to see into the mind of one of everyone's favorite villain.

(Also, sorry this is so long. I had just read it and wanted to get that off my chest)

Poruszająca i dająca pole do popisu w kolejnych częściach głównej sagii. Mam nadzieję, że Klonowy Cień powróci!

Mapleshade's Vengeance was the one I was looking forward to the most out of all of the novellas and it did not disappoint! I was really sad when she had those sad things that happened to her. Like, it was not fair of her mate to not stand by her. At least he should have talked to her about finding a new mate in his Clan. I don't want to spoil this one, but it's the one of out of all of these that's worth reading.

Mapleshade is evil and manipulative and selfish but when you read this book you realize that she was deeply hurt and she broke as a person (Cat). her love abandoned her after her kits drowned. and the only thing she wanted was love and acceptance

I took breaks in the book bc it had boring parts

"Zemsta Klonowego Cienia" to moja pierwsza nowelka i zostanie mi długo w głowie.

There needs to be an in between for the super editions and novellas because the novellas are almost too short and the super editions too long. This book was very dark, even for a warriors book. I wouldn’t recommend it for the 10-15 year olds this series is mainly targeted for. I really liked it though, we don’t get very many evil character perspectives in the main series. I really liked Myler, he was the best character in the entire book and I hope he doesn’t feel bad. I can’t wait to read the next!

My best friend also named Sofia, had a warrior cats phase. In fact, at 11 years old she prayed to GOD to become a warrior cat and run away to the forest behind her house. Since I'm a good friend, I decided to put myself in 11-year-old Sofia's shoes, or rather paws, and catch a glimpse of her very sad childhood. That being said, this book was beautiful. I adored Mappleshade's (why do they all have such weird names) character. I found myself truly immersed in the story and plot. I sobbed with her at the loss of her kits. Overall, Sofia convinced me to read one of the books of the fury bible, and honestly, I am not mad.

To Sofia,
I held up my end of the deal. Now you have to read a mafia romance book :)
Good luck!

This surprised me more than any other Warrior Cats book! I was impressed and horrified by Mapleshade's determination to not only kill in her vengeance quest on earth, but to continue haunting other cats in the afterlife. This is the first Warriors book I read where readers follow the villain instead of a hero, and it was quite well-done. Mapleshade is an eerie villain, because we get to see why she's like this and can sympathize with her to an extent. I also truly did not expect what happened at the Moonstone to happen at the Moonstone. I was captivated and caught up in Mapleshade's plans, and I really hope that more Warrior Cats books will keep me just as interested.

This has to be the darkest of the Warrior stories I have read. To be honest, I wouldn't want my child to read this one. It's fine for the likes of older fans. I'd be concerned, however, that this would encourage the likes of hurting those who have done you wrong. It is a story told from the viewpoint of a villain, and you do sympathise with her. That is why I worry it could give younger people the wrong idea.

Ocena: 5⭐

No i jak w większości książek Erin Hunter - urzekła mnie końcówka.

OMG! I always knew Mapleshade's life would be tragic, but I never imagined it'd reach this extreme. I understand the mistakes she made, and why the other Clans said she committed a great betrayal, but I still think they should have at least given her a few days to leave. They can't just push her out of their lives whenever they want. I understand that Mapleshade has a lot of anger inside her, and I wish she could have started a new life with Myler in the barn.

W dalszym ciągu uwielbiam tą nowelkę i od dłuższego czasu chodziła mi gdzieś tam z tyłu głowy żeby ją sobie odświeżyć

I never thought I would find a Warrior Cats book/novella I did not enjoy, however, I have definitely found it in this one. I forced myself to finish it though it is quite short. I found it sad and horrific from start to finish. This is one of three stories in Shadows of the Clans and is amazingly alongside just about the best one I have ever read 'Ravenpaw's Farewell'.

While this was certainly emotionally charged, some things simply happened way too fast to have any impact (or are simply impossible like the water levels changing so quickly).
But overall, I enjoyed the backstory and honestly would love to see more "villains" like her.
