Spare Change

Rate this book
Ex-rocker Hayden Jaimes is finally finding peace. After years of alcohol and drug abuse, he’s managed to simplify his life. He remains close to his former wife, and dotes on his daughter. But as the child ages, the relationship with the teenage girl deteriorates. The harder he tries, the worse it gets. When she hooks up with an unsuitable young man, Jaimes bites his tongue and tries his best to be supportive…until she ends up missing.

The police are called in but they come up empty. When Jaimes has a chance encounter with Salem Reid, whom he had coached decades ago in youth baseball, Reid offers his help. Salem Reid’s investigation takes us into a tangled underworld of predators and an unimaginable sexual deviant.

As Jaimes and Reid pair to hunt for the missing girl, we are reminded of how a father’s love has no bounds and what lengths he’ll travel to protect her. Spare Change is the third book in the Salem Reid trilogy. Patrick Brown’s other works include Varied Traits and Heavy Hour.

Spare Change sees Salem Reid -- part altruist, part avenging angel -- lending his unique skill set to an aging rocker whose daughter has fallen into the hands of a particularly depraved band of miscreants. What unfolds is a fast-paced, page-turning tale that combines excellent writing, edginess, pacing, and a terrific sense of place.

For me, Salem Reid's appeal lies in his capacity for unflinching violence in the service of justice, combined with an unwavering support for the victimized. It's a role he plays with cool efficiency and aplomb.

A great read!

I've read the entire Salem Reid Trilogy and while they were all terrific, this one was my favorite! Salem Reid serves justice to an underworld of sexual predators in a way only he can. This one had lots of twists and turns that kept me glued to my kindle for the short two days it took me to read it. Highly recommend anything by this author!

I loved reading all of Patrick Brown's Salem Reid thrillers, but I think Spare Change is my favorite. Well-written, gritty, but with a heavy touch of humanity, Spare change is a terrific read.

Shortly after Hayden Jaimes discovers his daughter is missing, he has a chance encounter with a man whom he coached in youth baseball 20 years prior. It turns out the man is Salem Reid. Jaimes bends Reid's ear, and the rough and tumble Salem Reid offers his help. The story is action-packed, heartwarming at times, and skillfully crafted.

If you are looking for a great mystery thriller, you can't go wrong with Spare Change!

I've been extremely happy to have read Patrick Brown's first two Salem Reid books. Each one seems to be better than the last .. and Salem is a character who won't forget easily. Although 3rd in the series, this one can be read as a stand-alone. As usual, I always recommend starting with the first, just so the reader gets every delicious nuance.

Spare Change is the name of a rock band, albeit one from 20 years ago. One of the founders, Hayden Jaimes, tells his story, which is the history that supports the present. Hayden was not your perfect young man. There was drinking and drugs and partying. There were also fights with the co-founder and other band members. But the one real joy in his life has been his ex-wife, and most especially his daughter, Olivia.

When his daughter goes missing, Hayden turns to a man he had coached many years ago ... Salem Reid. It is Salem that saves his sanity ....

Salem's investigation into Olivia's disappearance leads him into the dark areas of life ... those of human trafficking.

This is such a well-written book! I loved Hayden's story .. he became very real and very human under the author's pen. His story, in itself, would have made a wonderful book. Once Salem gets involved, the pace picks up rapidly, with non-stop action. There is violence, there is sexual content, but none of it is gratuitous. This book grabbed me from the very first page and didn't let go until the very end.

I wish to thank the author who provided a digital copy of this novel. The opinion expressed here is unbiased and entirely my own.

Sorry guys ... I found it a stop start affair. when the action was happening. Boy was the action happening. Sadly it dragged with too much detail of driving down x street that turned into y becoming z before the intersection of Peach Way.
I ended up skipping big chunks of text just to reach the end.
