After being left at the altar on her wedding day, businesswoman banker Allie Strickland returns to her hometown of Heartland Cove on a leave of absence to recover and regroup. Heartland Cove County in New Brunswick boasts a population of 899 people, a small town of Victorian homes, quirky citizens, and a booming tourist industry where people flock to see the longest covered bridge in the entire world.
Grieving the trauma of her ex-fiancé’s betrayal and overwhelmed by her clingy mother and the fry truck family business, Allie rents the first available house she can find. But on the very first night, Allie’s peace and quiet is violated by an unexpected intruder who breaks into the house while she’s taking a bubble bath. An intruder with an alias and old ties to Heartland Cove.
Forced by unusual circumstances to share the same rental house, Allie’s suspicions of the man grow — even as she finds herself attracted to him. But is Ethan Smith merely a freelancer on a magazine assignment taking photos of the famous Heartland Cove bridge — or is he an undercover spy for the mayor who wants to ruin the charming town by running a new highway through for his own profit?
Kimberley Montpetit once spent all her souvenir money at the La Patisserie shops when she was in Paris—on the arm of her adorable husband. The author grew up in San Francisco, another swoon-worthy city, loves all things Parisian and chocolate and lives in a small town along the Rio Grande with her family.
Kimberley has won many awards for her work, including the Southwest Book Award, the Whitney Award, the Arizona/New Mexico Book Award, is a Crystal Kite Finalist (SCBWI) and included in the Bank Street College Best Books of the Year.
She once stayed in a haunted castle tower room at Borthwick Castle in Scotland, sailed on the Seine in Paris, walked the beaches of Normandy, eaten in numerous French cafes, ridden a camel in Petra, Jordan, sunbathed on Waikiki, shopped the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, and spent the night in an old Communist hotel in Bulgaria.
She adores all baked goodies; brownies, éclairs, donuts, tarts, and pie, and makes a lot of chocolate chip cookies while revising.
Kimberley is, of course, hard at work on her next novel(s).
March 13-15, 2017 reread. I went back and reread this again to do some editing for the author. I must say that I really liked it even better the second time. Allie, the MC, didn't seem as whiney to me at the beginning. Still loved Ethan just as much the second time around. He's very loving, gentle and patient(and full of surprises). I am going to raise my rating as well because even though I was looking for edits I was just as engrossed in the story or more so the second read through. If you haven't read it or started and maybe paused, the typos/editing will be fixed soon and there are plenty of swoony moments hidden inside that I would say give it a shot.

I loved the synopsis of this book and was so excited when it was included as one of the fifteen novels in the Love and Romance box set. It was the first book I turned to when my box set downloaded. I couldn't wait to figure out how the two MCs were going to connect and how his "secret" would be revealed. What was the whole thing with the Mayor? Lots of questions and thoughts before going into reading this. The title and book cover have been catching my eye for a little while now so I was pretty excited to read it.
After finishing the book I have to say that I loved the storyline. It was a really cute story. I liked Allie and Ethan's interactions. Ethan was just amazing. I despised Sean, and the way his character was written worked great to give a little angst and set up our plot line. I loved the setting in a smaller town and the love that Allie had for her town. I even enjoyed Allie trying to figure out life after her fiasco of being left at the alter. She mourned and wasn't just instantly up again falling in love and saying everything was hunky dory. She even met an amazing man who fell head over heals for her and yet she didn't rush and didn't allow him to push her into a relationship because she was trying to figure out the love she had for her fiance Sean. I thought there were lots of great points in the story. The chemistry between Allie and Ethan was great, even just as friends and "neighbors". Ethan helped her in her healing process as well as her best friend Marla. Some great characters within.
Now after saying everything I enjoyed (there's more too but I'm trying to keep this review from turning into a novel itself) there were several things that I struggled with. I would have loved to given this a higher rating because I really did like the storyline.
First thing that I struggled with was the editing. There were lots of typos throughout the book. Normally I can see a handful slipping past as whoever is writing/reading/editing it over and over again might miss something due to the fact that they have seen it multiple times. But this had so many that needed to be fixed that it was distracting. But like I said I really liked the story so I just ignored those and kept reading.
Second thing that I struggled with was Allie's character. Not all the time but occasionally she was almost written too strongly. Does that make sense? I hope with all my ramblings below I can express myself that you can understand what I'm thinking. At the beginning I wasn't sure what I was going to think about her because she seemed very whiny and needy. But then everything started happening with the wedding and her fiance not showing up, and it started to shed some light on her character. Then there were moments that I just loved her character. She was easy to relate to. Then it would switch back to her being completely overboard in her reactions and sometimes the dialogue didn't quite fit her character. Almost as if a switch would flip and she was a new character. Maybe that's not the right way to describe it but there were some inconsistencies that were frustrating. On the other hand Allie was always there willing to help others, her family, her best friend, her neighbor that I loved her character. I could see the hurt she was feeling and yet she tried to keep going with life and figuring it all out with several other curves being thrown at her. Ahhhhh I just go back and forth with her. I want to look at it as her character had just had a massive shock and so there were little blowups that came as she was dealing with the pain and then she was back to being her normal self. By the second half of the book I didn't see as much back and forth with her character as the beginning, so maybe it was just her struggle and healing that the author was trying to convey.
There is a pretty funny scene at the beginning where Allie and Ethan first meet. Overall if the typos were fixed I'd probably raise my rating half a star to a full star. Will I be reading this again? It might surprise you but yes, I would. I'd be willing to overlook all the stuff I struggled with because I really did like the storyline(I keep saying that but it's true). Some parts of the book might be a little fluff but not overkill. I hope my review makes sense and helps you in your decision to read this book. If you go into reading it realizing there are typos and character development the further you read I think you'd enjoy it, if you can look past what I said.
Content: Characters use the H*** word multiple times, more so at the beginning and then it tapers out. Some innuendos but nothing graphic-more Allie thinking about getting married or that she should have gotten married and been a married woman. Characters talk about waiting for after marriage to have sex. Overall not squeaky clean but I would say clean.
i listened to the audiobook on YouTube. Great choice. It is a cute romantic story, set in a small town. (My favourite kind of stories.) I am curious about the following books of the series.
If I had been left at the altar not only would I DIE of embarrassment and shame, I'd probably move to another town or city where no one knew me. Poor Allie's been planning her wedding for months, and packed up an apartment she loves to move to her fiancé's place after the wedding, and the man she loves and has been with for 5 years, chooses to put his court case above marrying her by not showing up and sending her an I'm sorry text!! Well, they do say actions speak louder than words, and Sean Carter's actions have spoken pretty loud if you ask me.
Allie goes back home to figure out what she wants to do next. She rents a small house for the summer, because who wants to live with their parents while trying to recuperate from a shattered heart. She's completely taken by surprise when a stranger lets himself into the house while she's soaking in the bath. This is one of the funniest scenes and laughed out loud. I also laughed when they first shared the house and Allie strung the rope dividing the house in half. Ethan is a little secretive and it makes Allie (and the reader) wonder what he's up to and if it's good or bad.
First of all I loved Ethan--he's sweet, patient and the complete opposite of Allie's ex Sean. His character is so easy to like, and I enjoyed finding out what his 'secret' was.
Sean, the guy who chose work over showing up at his own wedding, takes a few days off of work and shows up to try to win Allie back. He's such a jerk and so full of himself I was amazed that Allie had dated him for so long. I guess love really can make people blind, but his plan to win Allie back in three days certainly opened up her eyes.
Speaking of Allie, sometimes she was a bit much--too whiny at the beginning but I gave her a break because she was left at the altar, but later on she could be kind of rude.
All in all this is a fun story. This is a clean romance.
Allie's fiancé is too wrapped up in his job as a lawyer. He puts his job first and Allie second. He even leaves her at the altar on her wedding day to track down a case for work. His only response was to send her a text: -"Sorry about craziness. We’ll get married another day. Not end of world. Promise."- Unable to stay in Toronto any longer, Allie decides to move back to her home town for a few months. Needing to get away from her parents, she rents a house for the summer. She is shocked when someone walks in on her while she's taking a bath in her new rental home! Even worse, she will have to share a house with a stranger! This book grabbed me from the start. I loved the fast pace and the easy reading style. I laughed out loud at the bathroom scene and throughout the story. There were a few plot twists and I found Allie really annoying but Ethan was awesome! There were several grammatical errors and some plot inconsistencies that did slow down the reading process, however. Some more editing would have greatly helped. I was thrilled that the story was based in Canada. I've read a few stories by this author but I think this was my favourite. I really enjoyed it.
This is exactly my favorite kind of book. It's got a sweet, clean story, great characters, fun plot and it's a quick read that I didn't want to stop reading!
Wow, I really loved Allie's character. I loved that even though she was left at the alter by Sean, she still moved on with her life. She was devastated, of course, but she didn't sit and mope and cry about that. I loved that she knew she needed some space from her family and the scene where Ethan finds her in the tub is just so funny! I love that they were able to move on from that and find a way to work out sharing the house. And I love that she is eventually able to see herself and Sean clearly and understand why things ended up the way they did.
You don't see the story through Ethan's eyes, so there are a lot of missing pieces. But I really like his character. He's a gentleman, even though he's obviously keeping secrets from a lot of people. And he lets Allie stay in his house, even though it's not convenient for him.
I really enjoyed this cute read! Make sure to get a copy so you can read it as well!
Not my usual fare, but despite some suspension of.disbelief (Ethan too good to be true!) I did enjoy! Allie's long time live in bf\fiance jilts her in favor of work on her wedding.day.Larger a bozo, never to be found. She runs back home to her parents.to a town very Maybury RFD! She soon runs into Ethan....and later Ethan runs into her ...naked in the bathtub, the realtor mistakenly rented to her. This is the most risque part of the book(nothing happens, he is total gentleman) However, his back story life long secret pining for Allie and relentless, selfless, Queenly treatment of her is undeniably swoon worthy ..no matter if a bit innocent, cheesy....and near saintly! Additionally and sadly of note,Allie in contrast is not quite so likable and can grate on the reader's nerves!😂 Moreover was disturbing how utterly submissive \deferential she was that narcissistic POS Oh...also noteworthy, Sean finally shows up ...a month later wanting her back, admits to having cold feet being unprepared to wed...ya think, loser!? Concurrently he nearly kills het, setting her afire in his careless pushy haste.Who is at the ready to save the days her life? Yep,sexy jack of all trades , Mr perfection, life time piner...soon to be billionaire and town steward...our Ethan! I had one of those..once upon a time....a lifetime piner , but he was.rather elfin of features.ie short,stout,freckled....and decidedly, non billionaire!😂

This charming book was an excellent look on how your life isn't wasted when a relationship ends, no matter how many years you spent in it and how close you got to the altar. The characters were all sweet in their own ways, minus the ex-fiance of ickiness, and the story itself was an adorable look at small-town life. I will note that this story, though clean in the romance department, did have a few (maybe five throughout?) bad words. Otherwise, a good read for a long afternoon.
I was expecting a little more push-back on the "secret," so this book wasn't at all what I was expecting.. It was a decent story, and of course there was a HEA.. but I don't know that I will continue listening to the others in this series.
I would absolutely DIE if I was left at the alter on my wedding day and that's just where Allie finds herself. Sean Carter deems his work as a lawyer as more important than getting married. Seriously--there were red flags all over that relationship, but a plan is a plan. Once he leaves her hanging, she runs back home to regroup, but still wants her freedom. She decides to rent a place in town and ends up having one of the most embarrassingly humiliating first meets ever with Ethan Smith.
I was swept away by the first 3/4 of the book. I thought that Allie's grieving process was normal and the feelings of guilt and attraction towards Ethan were natural. I still think she was a little clueless for not realizing the kind of man Sean is, but who isn't blinded by love sometimes? I love how the romance in this one was gradual and almost spelled out, instead of having a sudden rebound feeling, although there are certainly some sparks flying. However, that last 1/4 of the book was so fast-paced that it lost the realistic feel for me. But because I was invested in the characters, I was happy with the final conclusion.
I loved unraveling Ethan's secret and adored him! A sweeter, more patient man can't be found. I think I enjoyed his character more than Allie's because through her grief, she was a little gruff and almost rude at times. I couldn't figure something out though:
Overall, this is a fun romance set in Canada and I did enjoy the plot, for the most part.
Content: mild language (more towards the beginning, but nothing too offensive); mild violence; mild(ish) romance (kissing, innuendo, talk of waiting/not waiting for intimacy before marriage).
*I received a copy from the author with no obligation for a favorable review. All thoughts are my own.*
After reading the final page, I sat back and asked myself if I agreed with the 87% of reviewers who awarded four or five stars for Ms. Montpetit’s accomplishment. I regret that, although I enjoyed reading this so-called clean billionaire romance, l had to answer, no. First of all, it wasn’t even a “billionaire” romance. The hero acknowledged that his bank account, although comfortable, was nowhere near that large. His grandmother, who was well-to-do, did have sizable real estate holdings, but not enough to warrant billionaire status. Nope – no billionaires here. I felt Ms. Montpetit got off to an excellent start introducing our heroine, Allie, as an excited bride-to-be who was jilted at the altar. But as the story continues, Allie loses all credibility as she refuses to face the reality that her ex-fiancé is a domineering, work-obsessed jerk who does not and never did love her. Our hero, Ethan, on the other hand, is a ray of sunshine peeking through the dark clouds surrounding Allie. To top things off, editing errors including numerous misspellings were un-needed distractions.
What a start to the book. Poor Allie! Her life is completely turned upside down. Then, just when she thinks she’s got a moment of peace, Ethan barges in on her. Literally. (So funny!) I loved watching her discover her self-worth and move toward true happiness. And who was waiting there? Ethan. He cared so deeply for Allie, and his actions showed that. He is so generous, and an overall good man.
I really enjoyed the book! The characters were easy to root for, and it was wonderful to watch their relationship develop. There were also some twists that kept things interesting.
I received a copy of the book, which I voluntarily reviewed. I have given my honest opinion.

A Wonderful 2nd Chance at Love! Great Audible Listen🎧 The Neighbor's Secret A Secret Billionaire Romance Series, Book 1
By: Kimberley Montpetit Narrated by: Sarah Sampino
The Neighbor’s Secret is a delightful and sweet story. Life does not always goes as plans but sometimes works out for the better. This book is well written, the storylines and characters are interesting and well developed. The chemistry between Allie and Ethan was amazing, and might i add he is a sweetheart of a man. I liked all the characters, with the exception of Sean, who was a jerk. I recommend this enjoyable book, there were some sad moments, some funny, some dramatic with a few twists and some romance.
I listened to the Audible edition, Sarah Sampino is a wonderful narrator and storyteller. She performs all the voices and brings the characters to life. She sets the perfect tone for the story and adds a nice dramatic flair. Thank you for another great & entertaining listen!
I liked the way Kimberley set up the story for Allie and Ethan to meet and begin their relationship. The circumstances were not unique, but the way she handled it allowed the story to flow smoothly and the progression of enemy to friendship to lovers was done exceptionally well. I liked the fact that the older, Ethan, was the one to have the crush as a teen and was also a geek. The final thoughts of the two characters had my heart feeling content.
I'm not quite sure if I feel sorry for Allie and her horrible wedding day experience or if I just want to shake her for not recognizing what a selfish creep Sean really is. So when she runs back to her small hometown and meets a great guy like Ethan, is Girlfriend really considering giving that jerk, Sean, another chance???? Yeah - I'm done!!!!
This was a cute book, kept me entertained and reading. The characters were fun and it wasn't too drama-rama.
Moral Note: Minor spoilers - He sees her in the tub when they first meet but there are no details. They live in the same house but not together - some innuendos.
Sometimes home is where to go and lick our wounds. And sometimes it leads to what was meant to be. What a good story! I couldn't put it down. A great read with a feel good ending.
I had a hard time with this story in the beginning because I found it hard to understand Allie. She seems to irrational even with the circumstance of her being left at the alter. As I got into the story though I began to realize how she had been mistreated and manipulated by her ex-fiance and so she really has some hang ups about herself and how she should behave. She doesn't really know what being loved feels like because her ex didn't really love her and so love is distorted in her mind and she has lost confidence in what she wants and who she is. I loved Ethan and how patient he was with her. He had every right to be angry with her but he took it and waited for her to heal. It was cute and sweet and very romantic in the end. A sweet read!
This is about a girl who was left at the altar, so she left where she was living to go back to her hometown to take a break and recover. She meets a very handsome guy named Ethan and under unusual circumstances they are "neighbor's." He is very kind, giving, and definitely a gentleman. I understand that she would be very upset and heart broken but she was a little too grouchy/rude. She was a bit of a brat at first. I loved the storyline and their very strong chemistry. I will look up some more books by this author.
When the groom puts his job ahead of his wedding and offers no remorse, you wonder why anyone would take the abuse. The author depicts of a true "doormat" personality. Can a stranger provide the courage to stand up for oneself when he is hiding his true identity? Allie has great lessons to learn in this story. The town described by the author sounds so nice the reader wants go visit for a while. Good clean romance with a touch of suspicion and mystery.
I really loved this sweet love story. The characters were funny, romantic and definitely kept my interest. If I have one negative it would be the amount of errors in the book. Missed words or misspelled words. Other than those it was great.
Allie left in the altar by Sean ( self absorbed jerk), going be home to heal her broken heart and humiliation. Meets Ethan in an awkward situation. ... sweet love sorry. Love it!
To start off I have to laugh. I thought when it said a neighbor's secret it would be like an in depth mystery thing. LOL! However, it was a really sweet. I love how she discovers herself and what happened in the other relationship. Gaining trust and confidence.
A lovely heartwarming story of love and hope. The way the main characters interacted so well, from almost the beginning, was great to see. Wonderful story line. I couldn’t put it down. Well worth the read.
I liked this novel for the fact that the right man was so perfect. Allie, is like many of us, insecure in our self esteem that we hold to the wrong man. Thank goodness there are Ethan's out there.
I LOVED Ethan. Allie drove me a bit nuts, but I understood her hesitancy. Still, it was all about Ethan. First read by this author and I will definitely be reading more of her. Enjoyable.
